Denis,

Thanks so much for this information. This has made my day - to know my ggggg-grandfather is the same name as I am.

If you do not know the answer to two more questions, that is fine. However, I have to ask:

1. Do you have any information regarding Michael Seavers (father/mother)?

2. I have seen that it was not until 1870 that the spelling of the last name became solidified with Seavers. On documents for Jacob and Levi around 1830's/1840's, I see Severs and Seavers. Now, with your additional information with the will, I see Severs, not Seavers. Do you know the reason for the discrepancies?

Again, thanks so much for this information. If you cannot answer these questions, that's fine. You have already been quite helpful!

Michael Seavers

As far back as I have been able to trace:

“Nearly all of the early inhabitants of Newton Township were Scotch-Irish Presbyterians... It was not until near the close of the last century that a few German families began to come into the lower portion of the township. The settled on the pine lands along the mountain. Before 1802 they had erected a small church, which was known as the Dutch Meeting-House. Among these were the Seavers, Thrushes, Frys, Brickers and others. Until 1830 the German inhabitants of Newton constituted but a small portion of its population; to-day they own much of the most desirable land in the southern portion of the township.”
HISTORY OF CUMBERLAND AND ADAMS COUNTIES, PENNSYLVANIA, Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, 1886.
I do not believe the Abram Seavers (b 1836) is a decendent of Jacob Seavers. My research has Jacob Seavers (married to Lydia) having children:

1. Levi B. Seavers (b 1838)
2. Sabina Seavers
3. Wilson Seavers

My ggg-grandfather was Jacob Seavers. Does anyone have information on Jacob Seavers (father/mother/siblings)? Can anyone tell me if Abram/Abraham Seavers (b 1792) and Jacob Seavers related (brothers perhaps)? Thanks!

J. W. Seavers charged with killing Frank Elgin at Norman, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 29 October 1903 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

Guthrie: Governor Ferguson offered a reward of $500 for the arrest and conviction of J. W. Seavers, charged with the murder of Frank Elgin, a patient in the asylum for insane persons at Norman. Seavers was a ward attendant. He became enraged at Elgin and beat him so brutally that Elgin died from the effects of the assault. Seavers was located at Osawatomie, Kansas, by the sheriff of Cleveland County, Oklahoma, but the governor delayed issuing a requisition and Seavers escaped. A coroner's jury at Norman exonerated the officials of the Oklahoma Sanitarium company for the responsibility of Elgin's death.

Hi Hilary

I might do - but have been fairly hectic over Christmas and once I have had a chance to go through all the info one of my couzins in NZ has passed on to me, I will see if I can post it on this - there certainly were a couple of people in my line that had the name George - but I would need to double-check to see if there is an Ann Nicholson - Dothory Scurr was one, and Edith or Elizabeth Buckle was another, but without getting all my paperwork out again, not sure for definite.

Best wishes

Lorraine

Hi, sorry to take so long to get back to you - I am not sure if we are related - I have some info which a cousin in NZ has found out - but not sure if your relatives are directly linked - I will need some time to sit down with my info and work it through. My grandfather was the son of a grocer in Thirk - his father William (william?)was the publican of the Blacksmith's Arms and the family seemed to be based around Easingwold, Coxwold and Felxkirk but I so far, I really have not had time to sit down and work it out, but I don't remember seeing anyone called Jane.

Lorraine

Hi, not sure who you are but your query/comment sounds about right - there was no agreed spelling in the 1700s, so people often spelt words in the way they spoke them - it is one of the reasons why English is such a varied language, people standardized spelling after places like the USA became independent so their spelling is different - you have noticed the mis-spelling, and corrections - judging by the numbers of people who still spell their names Severs, some never switched back.

The earliest recorded Seavers I know of is buried in Malta - he was a Knight Templar, but no idea where he came from (Knight Templars were not supposed to be married, and were not allowed to marry, but I guess theymay have accepted widowers if the widower had land/money to donate to the Order, or could earn more than his keep!. It does rather mean that the chances of being descended from him are slim!

About 20 years ago I tried to look the surname up in the Great Book of British Surnames, it said that the surname was thought to be of Viking origin and would have been a girls first name meaning either "sea passage" or "safe sea passage" - the Viking spelling that edition gave was Saefaru - sorry, no idea if it is true or not, but liked the name.

My grandfather's framily came from Thirsk, Easingwold and Coxwold, amongst other towns/villages around - I'm not sure if we are related, but there was certainly a George in our family as well!

Best wishes

Lorraine Seavers

Nancy Seavers/Arden S. Hagood, TN

Looking for information on Arden S. Hagood (b. 1839), m. Nancy Seaver(s) 28 Sep 1869 in Hawkins Co., TN. I believe his father was Benjamin Hagood, as District 8 Hawkins Co. in mid-1800's lists Benjamin Hagood with children Arden, Nahum and Nancy. I think that the "S." in Arden S. Hagood is Sanders.

My husband's ancestor Nahum Sanders (1740-1795 NC) had a son named Arden who is also found in District 8 Hawkins Co.

I think there must be a family connection here as the only birth noted in Nahum's "pocket book" which also held a small note pad was A. Hagood b. Jan 17th, 1739.

Another of Nahum's son's mentioned in a letter to his brother that "Hagood and Nancy" are doing well.

I think that the earlier A. Hagood was a brother of Nahum's wife Susanna (maiden name unknown)..

Oh, these brick walls!! Any suggestions or information greatly appreciated!! Mary

Mattie Seavers appears on a family group sheet that I have. She is reportedly the daughter of Lee SEAVERS and Susie LENTON. I received this info over 10 years through a mailing I sent to all the SEAVERS in Carroll County, TN. A Trezvant, TN decendent, was kind enough to send me names and a few details, but with no dates. My goal is to connect this family to Fielding SEAVERS.

Children of Lee SEAVERS and Susie LENTON were reported to be: Percy, Milton, Bennett, Mattie, Robbie (who married ? Perkins), Gertrude, Lackie, Eunice, and George.

Additional information was that Lee SEAVERS was 1st cousin to Thomas Seavers (1866-1960). Thomas SEAVERS was the grandson of Fielding SEAVERS (b.1809), through his oldest child William A. SEAVERS. Children of Fielding SEAVERS are: William (b.1832), Clinton (b. 1834), Cornwallis (b.1836), James (b.1839), Susan (b. 1842), Alger S. (b. 1844), Joel A.B. (b.1846).

In continuing to look through my census information, the Anna D. Seavers referred to is probably the wife of Isaac (see my earlier post on 23 Aug. 2002). Since husband and both children are buried in the Rehobeth Cemetery, it's reasonable that the wife is also buried there.

Henry Seavers, 1810 Census of Frederick County, VA

I have, for over two years, been trying to find my g-g-grandfather, William Sever (b. Oct. 16, 1788; d. Apr. 3, 1870)in a census earlier than 1820 (where I found him in the 1820 Census of Emanuel County, GA). I am currently checking other spellings of the Se/a/e/ver/s name, and recently found
a Henry Seavers, of Frederick County, VA in the 1810 Census, who had a son in the 16-24 age range. My g-g-grandfather, William was 21 or 22 years old at that time. Do
any of you Seavers have any info on Henry and his children.
Thanks

Re: Seavers Family

Kathy, We were in touch a couple of years ago. I haven't been well and am just getting back to the research. In the meantime I have come up accidently with a few more facts. I have a second cousin in Columbus, Oh - John Kennth He was born in 1935 but there is the name John again. His grandfather and father were John. He just heard from someone name Jason Seavers I believe in Illinois. I recently received a picture that had belonged to my Aunt that has the inscription Cousin Isaac (Ike) Seafers and his daughter, Minnie Stowe. It was taken about 1924. He appeared to be elderly and she was middle aged. That is the first time that kind of name change came up in the family. Let me know if any of those names are familiar to you. I had an Uncle name Isaac so it obviously is a family name. Hope to hear from you. Thanks Joy Seavers Smith
