Michael Secrest m. Charlotte Hammond

I am seeking information on Michael Secrest b. 1806 North Carolina d. 1839; married 1839 Clarke Co., Alabama to Charlotte Hammond b. 1800 Kershaw, South Carolina d. Apr 07, 1857 Polk County, Texas.
Children: Nancy, Cynthia, Melinda, Eliza, Jane M., Mary, and Matilda.
I have seen a spelling variation of the surname as Secrease & Sigrist.
I think that Michael Secrest parent's are Jacob Secrest and Nancy MNU.
From what I can tell from ancestry.com, Michael Secrest's grandparents are Jacob Secrest b. 1730 Hamburg, Germany d. 1821 North Carolina; married Janet Barbara Sims b. 1730 England.
From what I saw on ancestry.com, Jacob is from Germany, but his wife Janet is from England. Where did they marry?
Hopefully, someone will have additional information that they will share with me on this family. Such as when they immigrated to America, ship name, etc.
I would really appreciate it if anyone has any family photos that they will share with me.
Michael Secrest and Charlotte Hammond Secrest are my 4th great grandparents.
Please answer this message or email me directly, I no longer belong to mailing lists.
Thank you,
Barbara

family_history@att.net

I take the picture if I see Secrest, even if it isn't mine. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Thanks, Michael

You're research is correct. There was more than one Noah Elwood Secrest. My Noah was the son of John and was born in 1836. Your Noah was the son of William and was born in 1855. You can read about both Noah's at this site:
www.heritagepursuit.com/Guernsey/Guersney1911P700.htm

Our Noah's were apparently first cousins, as the father of Mine was John, son of Henry and yours was the son of William, also a son of Henry.

I've just starting poking back into this line... Noah Ellwood Secrest to Melba Virginia Secrest (1900-1949) to Virginia Louise McLaughlin (1927-) to Linda Kay McConahy (1948-) to Me. I'm sorry that I don't have any thing to add to Henry, I have the same hearsay that you have. I am curious about Noah's father, you have John (1811-1883). I have William (1828-1913), everything else picks right up same as yours. This was originally my grandmothers research, but I thought I felt pretty good about it. I guess I was just trying to figure were I went off the rails. If you have the time I'd love to talk. mps72@yahoo.com Michael Phillip Segrest

Secrist family of Frederick County VA-who was Henry Secrist, really?

I am a descendant of Henry Secrist of Frederick County VA. My line of descent is as follows:

Henry Secrist, died 1799
Frederick Secrist 1754-1834
Henry Secrest 1785-1851
John Secrest 1811-1883
Noah Elwood Secrest 1836-1921
John Howard Secrest 1871-1931
Betty Nell Secrest Foster 1918-living
Leslie Nell Foster Robinson 1944-living
Leah Nell Robinson Siebert ME

There is much confusion and speculation about the origins of Henry Secrist who died in Frederick County VA in 1799. Some have him as the son of Bartholomew and Eve Secrist of Lancaster Co. PA. Others say he is Heinrich Siegrist who immigrated from Buchenloo in 1734. It seems to me that no original research has been done in a long time. Folks just keep stirring about the same stories over and over again and offer no concrete documentation. Here is what I know that is documented.

1. Henry bought and sold land in Frederick County VA from the 1760's onward. I have copies of the land records index.

2. Henry took the Oath of Allegiance in 1768. This is recorded in Frederick County Order Book 14. From what I understand, only those who were foreign born took the Oath of Allegiance. That means that Henry was not born in the United States, hence he was not born in Lancaster County PA in 1730 as many have stated.

3. Henry appears on the 1782 Frederick County Tax Lists.

4. Henry made his will in 1797. I have a copy. It's hard to read. I'm going to try to transcribe it in the next few months. The family surname is spelled Segerist in this document.

5. An Executor's Bond is found for the Estate of Henry Secrist in 1799 in Frederick County. I have a copy. It is very hard to read, but it does name all his children and his wife at the time of his death. I'll give a try at transcribing this too. He lists his older children and younger children separately. He lists a Jacob in the older group and a Jacob in the younger group. Did he have 2 sons named Jacob? One with each wife? After all, he had an Elizabeth with each wife, why not a Jacob? My mother told me that there was some confusion in the family several generations ago as to Jacob. Some referred to him an grandfather Jacob, others as Uncle Jacob. Perhaps because there was an older one and a younger one? Who knows. One more mystery to solve.

Other than these things, what other actual documentation for Henry is out there? Not family stories, rumors or even collateral evidence (such as who his wives were. I'm pretty sure they were Printzler's like everyone says but since no marriage records have been found, this is technically supposition) but hard facts.

He may be very well be the son of Bartholomew. Hoever, he isn't mentioned in Bart's will. Perhaps he took his portion early and lit out for Virginia. Perhaps, if Bart and Eve were Mennonites as has been suggested, Henry left that faith and was disowned. Henry's children living in Virginia were clearly Lutherans.

If he is Heinrich Segerist from Buchenloo, what happened to the wife and 10 year old daughter who came over with him?

In the immigration lists on Ancestry.com, there is a Heinrich Segerist who arrived in the Carolinas in 1743. Who is this? Does anyone know?

So basically, we know that Henry Secrist was foreign-born, living in Frederick County Va by the early 1760's, had a number of children and died in 1799. Anything else is supposition.

Sorry--I don't know how you can get a copy of the Sewickley Church history. The copy I have belongs to a distant cousin who loaned it to me a year ago and it is way past due to be returned to her, but I've had medical problems that put me behind schedule in publishing my Freed History that I got some info for from this book.

I can tell you it was compiled by W.R. Branthoover in 1977.
Perhaps if you go on the internet, you can track down this church and contact someone there. As I said before, it is probably now a United Methodist Church as the United Brethern and the Methodist joined in April 1968 and became the United Methodist. It just states that it is in South Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland County, so I can't even tell you which town it is in. Possibly in the vicinity of West Newton and Smithton.

I grew up in that area, but I have been gone for 52+ years and didn't begin this research until 1977 and so it has all been new to me going back and finding the various cemeteries that I have been referred to, but had never heard of before.

Classification: Query
Surnames:
Sorry--since this is not my Jacob Sechrist I haven't tried to find any additional info on him. The cousin I referred to did his research before genealogy became available on the internet so he did it the old-fashioned way--interviewing people and going thru county history books at the local historical society.

Since he passed away I have not been able to locate his files. I did find his two sisters (one single living with her widowed sister) but they were not close to their brother and said their other brother took charge of getting the house cleared out, sold, etc. and they have no idea what became of the records/files that represented years of work. This cousin was the president of his local genealogy society and I thought the files may have been donated to them, but another distant cousin who I met thru this first one, said the society was also wondering whatever happened to his files.

Searching the U.S. Census or finding church records would be your best bet. I told you the name of the church where Jacob and Nancy attended and are buried in the church yard. Perhaps you can call or write and ask if there are old records available. It was the Sewickley Church of the United Brethern in Christ which is probably now United Methodist. This is in South Huntingdon Twp, Westmoreland County, PA. That's all the information I can provide.

Hello Pat--

I went through the Funk History and found Christian's will which gives his daughter's name as Nancy. I have also found her listed as Nancy Ann and Anna and even Mary Ann in one place, but it's all the same person.

I also have (on loan from same person) "History of the Sewickley Church of the United Brethern in Christ" AKA "The Funk Cemetery" and it has a copy of the gravestones which includes:
Jacob Secrist died 1841 in 67th year of his age
In memory of Nancy wife of Jacob Secrist died Aug 16, 1848 in the 60th year of her age.

I went thru some notes received in 1982 from another cousin (now deceased) who was trying to determine which of three Jacob Secrest/Secrist/Sechrist he had found was really ours.
Here's one listing he sent:
Jacob and Nancy Funk Sechrist had eight children: John wed Catherine Long; Christian wed Jane Blackburn; Ann wed Jenkins Carahan; Jacob; Daniel; Mary wed John Carahan; George wed Cynthia McQuail; and William wed Lydia Kaufman.

The Funk history has: George married _______McGrail so I put that name in google.com and got lots of references to her parents' family trees, etc. so it is McGrail, and her first name is Cynthia in all those references. She is the daughter of Moses McGrail and Sarah Mains and according to the internet references she was born in 1823 in West Newton, PA which is in Westmoreland County not far from where I was born.

One reference has Barclay C. Dewees m. Rosanna Secrist, dau of George and Cynthia of Chester Hill, Ohio and Iowa, so if you search the US Census for those two states in 1850 to 1930 perhaps you can trace their family.

Hope this helps!

Hi Pat--

The Jacob Secrest from Lancaster is not in my direct family although he may be a cousin to my family. Our Jacob was born in 1782 in Westmoreland County/now Fayette County, PA.

The confusing thing is that the Sechrist, Funk and Zumbro Families intermarried in several generations and I am related to all of them on both sides of my maternal grandmother's family.

Maria/Mary Sechrist/Secrest, the oldest daughter in my Sechrist Family, married William Shrader. Two of their daughters married two of Nancy Funk's brothers: Daniel and Henry. Then three of Daniel's children married three of the Zumbro siblings. The mother of these Zumbro siblings is the older sister of my g-g-g-grandmother, Susanna Friedt Rowe. Then there is Abraham Lincoln Funk who also married into my family.

I have a Funk Family History (on loan from a distant cousin) and I will go thru it and see if I can find any family for George Secrist, son of Jacob and Nancy. It may take a few days as I am in the midst of making a wedding shower gift right now.

I would like to help you but your information is confusing to me. My ggg-grandfather, David Sechrist, had a younger brother, Jacob, born in 1781. They lived in Fayette Co, PA.
Jacob did have a daughter named Elizabeth b. 1805 according to my records, but she married Jacob Albright (1805-1882).

There was another Jacob Sechrist who may have been a cousin to our family who married Nancy/Mary Ann Funk, but they did not have a daughter named Elizabeth that I am aware of.

Do you know who were the parents of Elizabeth's father, Jacob? If they are Valentine and Susanna, that is our family who came from Switzerland and landed in Baltimore, MD in 1765. The name was originally Siegrist, but today some spell it Sechrist while others use Secrest.

My grandmother was married to a Secrest and she apparently was Cherokee (we don't have her name)- I know of two daughters, Bertha and Minnie. I'm from Bertha's line (Nichols, Glass, Pence).

Hi, again. Thanks for the reply. My Jacob Sechrist was also b. 1782; not sure where, but another genealogy puts him in South Huntingdon Twp., Westmoreland Co. PA at sometime in his life. He died in 1844 and may be buried in the Funk Cemetery there; his wife Nancy Ann Funk, was buried there 16 Aug 1848. Interesting how the Funk/Sechrist families intermarried. I've not checked that out yet. Any help you can give when you have time re George Secrist (or Jacob, for that matter) greatly appreciated.
HI, "Bonisue to". In your reply to me you indicated that your cousin sent info re a Jacob and Nancy Funk Sechrist with 8 kids and then you named each with his/her spouse. That is definitely our family. Do you know where he found this info? I'd really like to pursue this as it is the closest I've come to finding info about Jacob/Nancy. Yes, I've found lots of info re Cynthia Mcgrail, wife of George Secrest--she would be my husband's great-grandmother. I've also found info re Roxanna Secrist & Barclay Dewees. Any help you can give will be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,Bonisue, I'm wondering if the information you have from "a cousin in 1982" re Jacob & Nancy Ann Funk Sechrist's kids is from a history done by Dr. Fred Zimmer & Bob Secrist. The kids all match what I have on that history. Also do you know where I can obtain a copy of "History of the Sewickley Church of U. Brethern in Christ" which you also quote? (See your 8/8/08 e-mail to me) I have traced Cynthia McGrail/George Secrist to OH; Cynthia to IA; also Barclay Dewees/Roxanna Secrist.
Thanks for your help. Pat

Hi, Bonisue59, Thanks so much for all your help. Interesting that United Brethren in Christ may be United Methodist! I am focusing on the church records at this time; my husband and I are hoping to go to PA & OH, the two key states, next summer and try to track down some of these people. I did access the Westmoreland website and found many websites for such things as births, deaths, wills, etc., so hoping to make some headway that way. I also found notice of Jacob/Nancy's son,John's death at that website. Again, thanks much. Pat Secrest

My great-grandmother and her mother moved to Washington County MN with Ambrose Secrest (my GG-grandmother's second husband, she was his third, his first two marriages occurred in Morgan County, IN) in 1853. A historical book from Washington County reports that Ambrose and his extended family (then 2nd wife, children (probably his from first and 2nd marriage as well as step-children, parents and brothers) arrived there in 1852 but many died due to cholera acquired on ship [“In 1852 Ambrose Secrest, his wife and six children, his father and mother and three brothers came up the river on the cholera-infested steamer Nominee (?Menominee) on their way from Indiana, and settled in the Bruce home (Francis Bruce first settlement 1842). They were stricken with cholera, and within days Secrest’s mother, father, wife, one child and two brothers died. (215)” [Rosenfelt, Willard E. Ed., Washington: A History of a Minnesota County, Croixdale Press: Stillwater, 1977.] I have no way of knowing if William was one of the brothers but it is possible. The 1860 census for Ambrose Secrest (spelled "Sucinct") lists multiple young men - I have wondered if some were sons and some were nephews.
