John Seddon.born Chorley circa 1864

Hi,
I am looking for the correct GRO index for the birth of John Seddon, who was born in Chorley circa 1864 so that I can apply for his birth certificate.

I know his parents were James Seddon and Ann Anderton/Haydock. Ann Haydock married a John Anderton in 1851. He died the same year and Ann went on to marry James Seddon in 1854.

Using the various census records, I identified John Seddon's birth year as the March qtr of 1864 and duly applied for his birth certificate. However, it would appear that this is the wrong person as the parental markers for this record do not match.

Any help would be appreciated,

Regards
Frank

Re: ORIGIN OF THE FAMILY NAME SEDDON

I have heard several popular theories about the Seddons originating in Sedan, but I tend to believe the opinion that the Seddons came from a small (now non-existant) Lancashire town named Seddon.

The etymology of the word would seem to match with the Anglo-Saxon use of Sed=Side Don=Hill suggesting that the town was on the edge of a hill perhaps in the Pennines.
There have been several theories as to why it became extinct, including being hit by the Plague, or it being merged with another local unnamed town as borders changed, or even that it was cleared for pastures and farm grazing!

The fact that Seddon seems to originate in the Lancashire area specifically would suggest to me that it is more likely to be a local place than an anglicised French area.

Hi Pete,

I hope you get this message, I have only just realised you posted re. the Seddon family.

I am very interested in your family tree. I had been told George Seddon the furniture maker was part of the family tree, but just couldn't work out who his grandfather or father were.

My direct line drops off the 'Family of Peter Seddon of Prestolee' after Peter b. 1689, he is a brother to William b. 1686, who was trustee of Ringley chapel; is their brother John, George's father?

Peter (1689-1731) was a Unitarian Minister at Penrith and then Cockey Moor. One of his sons was Rev. John Seddon (1719-1769) a Unitarian devine who preached at Cross St. Chapel.

I have quite a bit of information on my line. Please get in touch and we could trade emails.

Jenn

Frank,
The George Seddon you speak of is undoubtably also my gt gt gt grandfather. He married Betty, who on one record is down as "Betty (Charlotte)". -Ive never heard Charlotte shortened to that before, I always assumed it was Elizabeth.
According to St Paul's records, her daughter, Betsy, married "Hiram Walker". Can you confirm this?
Betsy's brother, Isaac, was my gt gt grandfather. I have a full family tree mapped out on www.genesreunited.co.uk, its a great site to use if you already have information, not so good at actually finding information though...
I do hope that you get this message as I would love to share the other details I have about our family.
The only discrepancy I see is that I have found a death certificate for a "George Seddon, born 1815" dated 1898.
Regards,
Alex

hi there - i dont know if you are still interested in tracing records of the seddon family, but if you are, you may like to know that i have detailed family records, including a full family tree recorded on a bible, going back to 'peter of prestolee'. i am directly descended from george seddon, furniture maker in the 18th century, who achieved national prominence at the time, and was a contemporary of thomas chippendale. the family furniture making business he established survived through several generations, and later members of the family were artists and architects, and associates of such well known historical figures as dante gabriel rossetti, ruskin, william morris, and others. if you wish to know more, feel free to make contact. pete[r] seddon.

Hello all,
I am interested in the Seddons who lived around the Burscough/Bickerstaffe area of Ormskirk district in West Lancashire. There were lots of them living in the area going back as far as 1500, when the area formed the largest lake in England, prior to being drained in 1697. Does anyone have any info about them prior to 1500?
A branch of the Seddons moved to St. Helens, now in Merseyside, in the mid 1880's and produced Richard John Seddon, who became the 15th premier of New Zealand. St. Helens has buildings and roads named after Seddon and choir stalls given in RJS's memory by his widow in the church where he was christened.
Mary Ellen Seddon (married name Harris) was my great grandmother. She was first cousin to RJS and very close to him.

Sheila

Hi Janet

It is rare to find other people with links to Seddon families in the Cape colony ( South Africa ) during the late 1800's and early 1900's.

I too am looking for any information about Seddon's whom emigrated from England to South Africa, ( The Cape colony )in the late 1800's.

My family traces back to a Joseph Seddon who lived in various towns in the Cape Province from 1891 ( earliest date we can place him there, but could be earlier yet )to 1934 when he died.

He married Charlotte Mary Bloomfield either in England or in South Africa, we don't know. Their first child was Edward Bloomfield Seddon born in 1891.

We know that Joseph Seddon worked as a prison warden in the small town of Clan William in 1907. And later the family lived in the town of Paarl.

In our family too is a rumour that Joseph Seddon was related to Richard John Seddon ex. PM of New Zealand. They were rumoured to be cousins, but I have not been able to confirm this myself.

If anyone is interested in or has information about Seddon's of South Africa please contact me.

I am the grandson of a John Seddon who resided at 61 Leyland Road, Southport. He had two children, Naomi (my mother) and John. He supported his family by delivering coal from a horse-drawn cart. I don't believe that he was actually born in Southport, but rather in Leigh or Ainsdale. His wife's name was Annie, nicknamed "Flo."
Hope this might be of some help.
Regards,
John Simpson

Hi

I've traced my direct line to Robert Seddon b. 1837 in Farnworth, his parents seem to be James Seddon b. abt 1784 and Ann b. abt 1790, though it's possible they are actually grandparents. They are living in Farnworth in 1841. I've gotten a bit lost in the sea of Seddon's in this area and have struggled to get further back than this.

Can anyone shed any light / make any connections that might get me further back.

Cheers
Jason Seddon

Robert married Mary Ann Booth in Bury in 1859. Finding him pre 1861 proved difficult until I found a very badly transcribed 1841 census, but I've yet to find his 1851 census or any other record of his siblings (nothing I can be certain about anyway). The marriage cert confirmed his father as James, and his birthplaces on the various census are Halshaw Moor and Farnworth. I suspect the rest of his siblings were born in another part of Lancs, possibly Ringley, as there seem to be a few possible looking IGI entries for children to James and Ann in Ringley and Outwood, though nothing I can be too confident about at the moment.

Cheers
Jase

Hiya

I've been favouring those as strong possibles for some time, though I think I need to check out the originals as they may have a little more supporting detail. I guess I need to do some more research into all the Ringley Seddons to at least see which ones don't belong in my tree. The Blomley connection is definately worth a closer look as well. And god knows where Robert Seddon's 1851 census is, that's been driving me crazy. I keep wondering if it was one of those water damaged ones. Either that or its been more badly transcribed than the 1841 (Lams Liddon indeed!)

Cheers Dan

Jase

Hi

That looks a good one, though the IGI marriage entry has Martha's mother down as Martha Seddon, though I don't know how accurate that is.

Of the 1851 entries for all Robert Seddons it seems the most likely, its close enough to go with. There seem to be more facts that match than don't. It also ties the Ringley IGI results in a bit closer.

Do you know if there are a wider range of Ringley parish records available in Bury or Manchester archives than are covered by IGI?

Cheers
Jase
