My Sedore branch is in Georgina Township Ontario. My grandmother and my father had both told me that one of our distant relatives was of aboriginal descent from the Wisconsin area.
I recently met a Sedore third cousin, who also said that his mother told him ,every Sedore in Georgina twp was related to a Blackfoot family. I find this unusual, as there are First Nations peoples living in the area, but the Blackfoot are from out west area.(Calgary and US )
Does anyone have information on this subject???
It would be greatly appreciated!!
Our branch also has quite a few marriages with the Thompson family of Georgina.

I don't mean to sound rude because I myself am a Sedore but I haven't met a Sedore who doesn't like a drink or two and possibly a fight or two. I was wondering if that is just my line of Sedores or not because I went out to calgary for an extended period of time and they were the same out there i was told by people.

I was just curious about the trend or whatnot
sedore83@live.com

The Susannah Sedore you are talking about was born 1802 the daughter of Isaac Sedore and Wyntje Lavinia Appleby, and yes did marry Sardis King. I don't have a date of death for her, or place of death, do you? I have Sardis born April 17, 1793, died 1861 at Richmond, Ontario, but no exact date of death. Do you have that also? I only have names of 7 children for this couple and would love to find names of the ones I am missing and who they married, etc.

The ones I do have are: Joel married twice, 14 children from his 2 marriages, Henry- one marriage and 3 children that I know of, may be others; Horace- married once and ten children; Sarah Ann- married once and seven children; William- one marriage and six children that I know of; Hannah Jane one marriage and eight children; and Reuben, I have one marriage and only one child, may be others.

The Isaac Sedore who was Susannah's father, and husband of Wyntje was born on Oct. 27, 1755 at Tarrytown, Westchester County, New York State and died Jan. 15, 1848 at Ernestown. He had a son Isaac born about 1791, died Aug. 17, 1874 at Kaladar, Ontario- his wife was Hannah York and they had 11 children, one of whom was the Susannah Sedore I had been talking about in older messages in this "thread". She was born Oct. 5, 1830 and married Stephen DAVIS.

I have never read that Sedore book you are talking about- what year was it published and by whom? I suspect it has a few errors in it. There are researchers who have worked in some detail in the past few years on the Sedore family. I did take the dates from their work and will find a link for you to a specific site.

Nora

His great grandfather was George Sedore, in the 1910 and 1920 census it's spelled Sedor. He states a different origin in each census: Polish, Polish with the language Slovaki(?), and Hungarian. I've just started this research, so I don't know too much more. They arrived in New York in the 1890s, not sure when they moved out of NYC - but by 1910 were in Putnam County New York and by 1920 in Dutchess County, where they stayed.
Thanks for responding.
Mary

I don't know if you're still watching this board, but just in case you are, I thought I'd reply. I am also descended from Stephen Chapman and Ann Sedore, through their son Archer, who married Jane (Elizabeth Jane) Ferris. I just came across the marriage record for Stephen and Ann, and it gives the state of their marriage as PA. This was in the US and International Marriage Records at ancestry.com. I have been trying to find Ann's family, but as of yet have not been able to do so. If you've learned anymore about her, I'd be grateful for the information. Which one of their children are you descended from?

Thank you thank you for this detailed info! I'm a descendent of that line of Sedores (I think, at least! Grace Sedore was my great-grandmother) and I've wondered where everyone is getting their information from. Ancestry is a great site but it's really easy for people to get mixed up and confuse people with similar or identical names. Thanks so much for using real data to sort it all out!

Apparently neither - the confusion continues!!! Haha, my Great Grandmother Grace Sedore Deitz was born in 1886 and died in 1941. Her parents were James H. and Susan (maiden name unknown), which is information from my grandfather (Grace's son). BUT she is showing up on SO many member trees as the daughter of Alexander Sedore and Catherine Davis - or at least, my Grace's death certificate is attatched to that Grace a lot of the time. I think everyone is getting my Grace mixed up with your Grace born in 1884, just like they were mixing up the two Mary Sedores in your post! I can't find any census with James H, Susan & Grace all together in one house so that's probably where that connection is getting lost.
But anyways yes your post definitely helped in that it just proved that you can't always trust every other member's tree - you gotta talk to the "old folks" and get information straight from the source!!! :)

As far as I can tell, Susannah was the daughter of Isaac Sedore 1791-1874 and his wife Hannah York 1795-1875. They were both born in NYS, and had eleven children that I have identified. Your Susannah died Aug. 4, 1915 at Richmond where she was born, and her son Alexander Davis named her father as Isaac Sedore on that death reg. I have names of 14 children for Stephen Davis and Susannah Sedore- do you want to swap info?

Your Stephen Davis may have had an older sister Mary Davis born about 1804 who is my own ancestor. Do you have other info on this Davis family?

Nora

Re: More info regarding Dutchess County Sedore's

Wow- I am constantly amazed at all the connections between families and info that you can find if you dig a bit deeper......

In my last message from earlier today I said I was not aware of any connections between the Sedore families in Dutchess County and the ones in Ontario, Canada- but they ARE connected. (of course)

In Ontario, I think that all the Sedore's in my files go back to Isaac Sedore born 1755 at Tarrytown, Westchester County, New York- Isaac's wife was Wyntje Lavinia Appleby. Isaac died at Ernestown, Lennox and Addington County, Ontario January 15, 1848. The Sedore's may have travelled to Rensselaer County in NYS from Tarrytown, and then on to Dutchess County as did so many early pioneer families (including my own Keech families, whose progeny ended up in Lennox and Addington County as well), and from there, eventually, up into Ontario, Canada.

It appears from posted online info that Isaac Sedore was the son of Coonradt Sedore and his wife Antje Boeckhout. Coonradt was born in Germany in 1723 and died Dec. 1792 at Tarrytown in Westchester County, NYS. Another son in his family besides Isaac (who ended up in Ontario, Canada) was Frederick Sedore born Oct. 23, 1762 at Tarrytown.

Frederick's wife was a Mary with maiden name unknown. Listed online are six children for Frederick and Mary including the elusive Charles Sedore that I mentioned in my previous message from today.

Charles Sedore was born about 1819 and died in 1859. He had two sisters and three brothers: Catherine Sedore born abt. 1804, Benjamin Sedore born about 1806, Sylvester born about 1808, Ann Maria born about 1814, and Abraham born April 1811. I know nothing about these Sedore's but there is info about them online and at LDS.

Charles Sedore married Sarah Matilda Barton on May 23, 1845 at the First Presbyterian Church, Wappinger, Dutchess County, NYS. I listed their children in my earlier message today. One of their sons was James Henry Sedore (there's what the "H" stood for, not Houghtalling) born May 21, 1857. He married Susan Eva Prudy. One of their daughters was Grace Sedore born April 1886 at Wappinger, Dutchess County, NYS, who later married Rutherford B. DEITZ in Dutchess County, New York, probably at Wappinger, and moved to Akron, Ohio by 1920.

Two hours later and another part of this greater mystery is solved.

Nora

Re: More Sedore Confusion- but solved!

Hi again- it was bugging me that I could not find your Grace Sedore in Ontario, Canada. From your messages I got the feeling you thought your Grace came from the Lennox and Addington County, Ontario, CANADA Sedore's- however, she was born in Dutchess County, New York State in 1886 and apparently lived her entire life in the USA as did her parents and most likely her grandparents and so on.

Her father was James H. Sedore born about 1857 in Dutchess County, New York, her mother's name is posted as Susan A. Prudy born about 1862 also in NYS. Your Grace died in Akron, Ohio on January 26, 1941. Her husband was Rutherford Dietz- names of their children as posted online were Alice Deitz born 1907; Eva Deitz born 1909; William Emmett Dietz born 1910; Rutherford Sedore Deitz born 1915, and Sheldon N. Deitz born 1921. I found Grace and first three children on the 1910 census at Wappinger, Dutchess County, NYS, with her husband's name recorded as Rufus Dietz.

I cannot find Grace's parents James and Susan after year 1900, but they may have changed their names (again)? I knew Grace was not yet married in year 1900 and had to be in Dutchess County somewhere with her parents, and they are in Wappinger but under the surname HOUGHTALLING. Do you know why? Here is that census info:

Year 1900 census taken at Wappinger, Dutchess County, NYS

James Houghtalling age 49 born May 1857 in NYS Both parents born NYS Occupation: Carpenter Married 17 years
Susan Houghtalling age 39 Can't make out her date of birth Born NYS both parents born NYS Md. 17 yrs and gave birth to 7 children, all 7 living
Flora Houghtalling age 16 born May 1884 NYS
Grace Houghtalling age 14 born April 1886 NYS
Emmett Houghtalling age 14 born April 1886 NYS- Grace and Emmett must have been twins
Walter Houghtalling age 11 born Sept. 1888 NYS
Mary Houghtalling age 9 born May 1891 NYS
Susan Houghtalling age 5 born August 1894 NYS
Elizabeth Houghtalling age 3 born May 1897 NYS

Grace's parents James H. Sedore and Susan are on the 1880 census at Fishkill, Dutchess County, NYS ages 23 and 18 years with their first son Ira E. Sedore age 11 months. You can find this census online at either Ancestry.com or through the LDS site.

The online posting that I found for your Grace states she was born 1886 NYS, lived 1910 at Wappinger in Dutchess County which is consistent with the census info above, and by 1920 was living at Akron, Summit County, Ohio, where she died in 1941.

Names of parents posted for your James H. Sedore are Charles Sedore born 1825, died 1860; and Sarah Matilda BARTON, born 1829, died 1875. I cannot find them in year 1860, and have not yet looked for them in 1850, however, I found widowed Sarah in year 1870 living at Fishkill, Dutchess County, New York State:

Sarah M. Sedore age 31
Emmett Sedore age 14
William Sedore age 11
Ira Sedore age 9
Emma Sedore age 7
Mary Sedore age 5
James H. Sedore age 3
Ida Sedore age 1

If Sarah died in 1875, which was only five years later than this census, then someone must have looked after the younger children- eldest son Emmett would have been only 19 years old himself.

It has just occurred to me that because your ancestor James always went by name James. H. (Sedore) that perhaps his middle given name was Houghtalling and that for some reason that is why he was recorded as such in year 1900.

I know nothing about your James H. Sedore's father Charles Sedore, but we know from info given by James that he was born in NYS as well, and I will try again to find him in year 1850.

So at this point I have no idea if there is a connection farther back with your NYS Sedore's to Ontario, Canada Sedore's, but I am sure that if you post some queries about this family in Dutchess County, etc. you might find some answers. As well, try to find out who posted that info about Grace and Rutherford at Ancestry.com, obviously someone somewhere has some info for you on this family.

If you ever do find a connection between your ancestor Charles Sedore and the Canadian Sedore's can you please let me know or post that info here?

And just to let everyone know then, the two Grace Sedore's from Lennox and Addington County were:

Grace Maude Sedore born Nov. 5, 1884, daughter of Alexander Sedore (son of Benjamin Sedore and Mary Pringle) and Cassie Davis- this Grace married Archie Albert Martin on July 17, 1901 at Roblin, Ontario

and

Grace May Sedore born Sept. 13, 1900 daughter of Alexander Sedore Junior and his wife Alice Dafoe, a grand-daughter to the Alexander Sedore above....this Grace married Herbert James Fowler on April 28, 1923 in Frontenac County, Ont.

And once again, I hope that all of this info helps someone, somewhere, as well as the gal who was looking for info about her great grandmother Grace Sedore Dietz from New York State.

Nora in Alberta, Canada

I too have seen the record of the marriage of Stephen Chapman and Ann Sedore. Unfortunately, the record is specious as it gives no date and the location of PA is probably incorrect. It would be helpful to find a record of the Sedore family in Massachusetts (if indeed that is where Ann was born).

Is there anyone else researching an Ann Sedore born about 1832 in Ohio? She also lived in Wapello co. Iowa and Montana. I believe she married Enoch Casebeer and had children....John, George, and Anna M. Ann was listed as a widow in the 1870 census for Wapello co. Iowa. I have descendent info on Ann Sedore that I would be glad to share. Thanks, Cheryl
