Hi.
The letters to Iris Seeds were dated 1913.
I found the family through Bryn Mawr College (many of the letters were from a PhD. holder from there. I've sent the letters to them, but would be glad to give you the Bryn Mawr email and the name of the person who sent the letters on from me to the family.
So I don't have the letters any more, but if you're related you'll be in touch with a very interesting branch of the family.

IOLA SEEDS, GERMANTOWN, PHILADELPHIA, PA.

Hi, how do? I have some personal letters written by members of the Edward Gordon Grosvenor family. He was a professional engineer and lived in Doylestown, PA, and later with his wife at 1028 W. Upsal St, in Mt Airy, PA. His wife may have died in Swarthmore, PA. They had a daughter who went to Bryn Mawr and received a Ph.D. Her name was Gordie Grosvenor and she served overseas after WWII helping displaced persons. She may have had a sister, Kiki. Kiki married Lt. Ralph Lester Cotton, Jr. THERE ARE ALSO SOME LETTERS TO MISS IOLA SEEDS OF 607 W. UPSAL ST, IN GERMANTOWN, PHILADELPHIA, PA. These last letter are older. I have a few photos, too. I'd like to get these back into the hands of the family. I am posting this on the Seeds, and Cotton boards, too. You can email me directly, too, at brendawestonwv@hotmail.com.
Sincerely, Brenda Reed, Weston West Virginia

Mary Seeds m. to Charles Asay, Philly, PA/Burlington, NJ area, early 1800s

I have a death certificate from Mary Asay which says her parents were Charles Asay and Mary Seeds. Mary Asay was married to and widowed early by William Beadell and reverted to using her maiden name after her husband died. I don't believe they had any children but I don't know that for a fact.

Mary Asay Beadell was 114 when she died in the Burlington County hospital in Mt. Holly, NJ, in 1937. She said she was born in Philadelphia, PA, on 19 Feb 1823 and that there was a bible which had her birth recorded in it.

She is a sister of my ancestor, Edward P. Asay, so I would like to find out more about her parents, if possible.

Where Charles Asay and Mary Seeds were born is unknown on the certificate.

Someone submitted her & her parents names to the FamilySearch.org website but they listed her mother as Mercy Seeds. Her name is clearly Mary on the death certifcate so I wonder if this person got the information from somewhere else.

If anyone has any information, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks.
Hi Gayle, I saw your posting to Josephine Miller about Arthur Seeds and was so happy to read it. Arthur Seeds is my Grandfather and the info I have on his siblings is limited. I knew he had two brothers, Edward D. Seeds and Herman Seeds and one sister Carrie M. Seeds but no info on their spouses or other relatives. Also I know that Arthur Seeds father was John L. Seeds and (I think) his first wife's name was Mary M. and his second wife's name was Elizabeth Good. If you have any information you'd like to share about the Seeds family I'd be grateful to hear from you. My email address is kkreeky@aol.com.
Irish Connection

Elaine,

I have traced my own family roots back to my Great Grandfather's home in a little place called Leitrim Hill just outside the Town of Kilkeel in County Down, Northern ireland. It sits at the foot of the famous Mountains of Mourne.

I always knew that my family were from that area but whilst I was trying to buy a site for a holiday home in the area I stumbled accross the very house where my own Grandfather left in 1920. It was just as he had left it and whilst I was unable to buy it, I did buy a site beside it which was also a Seeds family homestead.

Since then I have discovered that many Seeds families lived in that area in the 1700s and 1800s although very few are left now. I have been told many stories by some elderly local people about the Seeds families in the area and am starting to follow some of them up.

I am not yet aware of a Simon Seeds but I shall continue to check for you. The local churchyrad may show something. One story which keeps cropping up is that the Seeds families were English soldiers from Norfolk who came to Kilkeel in the late 1600s and settled in this small area. If that is the case, I would hope to check out the Army records in the future.

Keep in touch,

David

Sandy,

Sorry I am not familiar with the name Seedes and there are no families of that name recorded in the Northern Ireland phone directories. I have corresponded with Elaine before and am keeping a look out for the Simon Seeds connection as I study my own family tree.
Just to clarify, Carrickfergus is in Northern Ireland in County Antrim. I am aware of a Thomas Seeds connection in Carrickfergus but I have not yet investigated. Apparently when they were renovating an old Inn/hotel (Dobin's Inn), they came across some papers of Thomas Seeds' hidden in the walls and these are now on display at the hotel. I'll check it out if your interested.

David

Origin of Seeds Name - Irish?

Beverly,

As far as I can tell the name was originally Seed and of English origin. It is reputed to have a number of possible origins firstly Sedemond, popular in the middle ages but more likely from the tradesname Seedman (a vendor of seeds).

My own family line apparently came to Ireland in the late 1600s and the name was then Seed. The additional S was added in more recent times. It would appear that by the time of emigration to USA, Seeds was the more common version.

You may wish to check out the 'Seed' message board as well. I know there are a number of English contacts there.

If I can be of any help with Irish roots, please let me know. You can E Mail me at charis@rseeds.freeserve.co.uk

Regards

David

I found it easy to trace my Seeds ancestors in the BMD registers because the name is rarer than Seed. I expected an Irish connection. but although my own family settled in Stockport Cheshire and worked in the mills and there were many Irish settlers I discovered that my Seeds family were from Belper in Derbyshire and that they are relatively numerous in the BMD registers.

I have not been able to find any information at all on John and Margaret's families. John was born in New Jersey (1849) and Margaret in Ohio (1857). Her maiden name was Schaffter. Both died in Centralia, IL in 1930.

John also had a daughter Abbie from a previous marriage for whom I would like to find more information. When his ex-wife remarried, Abbie took her step-father's last name of Fairfield. She married Charles Estes. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
