I too am looking for info on a Julius SEGAR. I descend from his first wife probably Abigail Thompson and daughter Abigail SEGAR who married Ezra West LEOBARD of Minerva, Essex Co, NY. Julius' 2nd wife was Almira ??. They moved with Segar children and daughter Abigail Segar Leonard to Montello, Marquette Co, WI. From there Julius, Elmira & kids went to EauClaire, Wi and then to MN.

The Town of Otis is located in the southeast portion of Berkshire County. It is bordered by the towns of Tyringham, Monterey, Becket, Sandisfield, Tolland and Blandford. It is a town nestled quaintly along several lakes and ponds, against gentle slopes of the Berkshire Range, and in the Farmington River Valley. Otis was established as a town in 1810, from two towns Bethlehem and Louden. Travelers seeking new land in Western Massachusetts settled the town for its location along the Old Knox Trail also known as the Old Boston to Albany Turnpike. "It used to be portion of an unincorporated land between the townships of Tyringham, New Malborough, Sandisfield and Becket called the District of Bethlehem. It was annexed to Loundon in 1809 and the next year was renamed OTIS for Harrison Gray Otis, lawyer and businessman, son of Samuel Otis, proprietor and great son of James Otis the early patriot", according to Floria Rosimiro, a descendant of the Otis family. No known relationship to the Segars.

Possible first marriage.
Massachusetts Marriages, 1633-1850 Massachusetts Marriages, 1633-1850
Name: Julius Segar, male Spouse: Abigail Tompson of Tyringham, MA
Marriage Date: 25 Nov 1820
City: Otis, Berkshire County, MA
Source: Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 1902540.

1850 US Census - Buffalo, Marquette County, WI
SEGAR, Julius, 51, farmer, b. Jan. 16, 1799, MA. I have found a marriage intention for a Julius SEGAR and Abigail Tomson, dated Nov. 25, 1820, in Otis, MA, which would be the right age to be my Julius. As Julius named a son Charles, I believe he may be the son of Charles and Hannah (DOAK) SEGAR.
I have found the parents of Olive, thanks to Ancestry posting the newly released Mass. records...
Her father is Ephraim SEGAR (1749-1806), born & died in Spencer, Worcester MA. His parents were Oliver SEGAR Sr. (1721-1803) & Lydia CLARKE (1730-1791), both of Spencer.
Olive's mother is Olive BARTON (1763-1821), of Oxford, Worcester MA & the daughter of Caleb BARTON (1704-1763) & Susannah MARCH (1718-1770) of Sutton, Worcester MA.
Olive SEGAR (1790-1855) was m to George LEONARD Jr. (1776-1833)at the age of 15, in Franklin Co VT, very soon after her father's death in MA. Her 1st cousin Roderick SEGAR (1781-1850) married Thankful LEONARD, the sister of Olive's husband George. Roderick (abt 1781-after 1850) was son of Henry SEGAR (1760-) & Rebekah HAYWARD (1764-) and also was born in Spencer. I have not yet figured out whether anyone else sent with Olive & Roderick to VT.

This may seem a little silly now answering a message five years old but someone may find it useful if a search ever turns this thread up. I know a lot went on, but I'm trying to get back to Amy's first post.

Ida May Seger was the oldest of four children (you named two others, another died) of Isaac G. Seger (May 1837 - October 30, 1910) and Louisa ? (1844 - 1926). As I stated in my other reply I had thought Isaac was the younger brother of Philo but recent info says otherwise. It now appears to me that Isaac is the son of Philo H. Seger. It looks like Philo had a first wife in NY before moving out to Michigan meaning he had at least 9 children with three different wives over his 85 year life. I am trying to track down Philo's parents but with little luck. If you're interested in more, either reply below or email me.

Beasley Segars Coffee County Alabama 1918

I'm looking for information on what happened to Lena Samantha Beasley b. May 1894 in Coffee County Alabama. Lena was the youngest daughter of Henry Thomas Albion VanBuren Beasley and Rebecca Matilda Faulk. The last online record seems to be a Coffee County Marriage record for 31 May 1918. A Beasley cousin and I have been looking for a death certificate or any information on what happened to the lady. She seems to have vanished off the face of the earth.

The Coffee County Marriage transcripts indicate that she married G.D. Seagers in 1918 (31 May). There is a George D. Segars son of Jonas J. Segars and Margeret Segars. Does anyone know if the G.D. Seagers that married Lena Beasley is really George D. Segars (b. 1891)? George died young (age 35) on Oct. 17, 1927 in the Coffee County Alms house. Another posting indicated that George's death certificate stated that he was a widower but did not post the name of George's wife.

The short form of the death certificate on Ancestry did not have much detail. Unfortunately, the short form does not show the wife's name.

I really appreciate any information!
Thanks!

Elaine
I'm looking for info on Emily or Emely or Emma Segar who married William Lafayette Tillman.

I have Emily/Emily/Emma Segar born November 18, 1851 in Alabama, died March 22, 1915 in Barbour County, Alabama. She married William Lafayette Tillman on December 13, 1873 in Macon County, Alabama. William Lafayette Tillman was born 1846, died 1909. I know of only one child, a daughter named Eula or Eulala Tillman (b 1875, d 1945) who married Jasper Cronin. All from Alabama, mostly Barbour County. Eula and Jasper are my ggg-grandparents.

Somewhere I got the name "Miander" in connection with Emily/Emely/Emma Segar. But I don't know how this is related, perhaps her mother's maiden name but I can't find a Miander, either.

I have a couple of old pictures of some women that I was told were "Segar" but I don't know if one is Eula and one is Emily/Emely/Emma. They like slightly similar as though related. I've attached the pictures in case anyone can identify them - I'm not sure I've named the ladies in them correctly.

People just can't fall off the earth, can they? Sometimes I wonder.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Bob,
Do you have an Olive SEGAR in your info? She is my g'g'g'grandmother, b. abt 1790 MA and m. 1806 in Franklin VT. There was Joseph SEGAR in Franklin VT 1810 census and Joseph SEGAR in 1790 Shoreham, Addison VT who may be father or older brother to Olive. A number of men who fought w. Ethan Allen in the American Revolution saw VT and NY around Lk. Champlain for the first time, Ft. Ticonderoga was there and the area was frontier. After the War they desired to move there and received land grants for their services or arranged to purchase land. It took time to arrange this and to move there, and I estimate that Olive's family moved there shortly after 1790. Her children's names are Benjamin, Alonzo, Hiram, Ira, George, Rebecca, Elsie Elizabeth, Emeline and Mary Jane which may be clues. Do you have any info that may fit?
Elizabeth

Emily Segar b. about 1824 in GA

I am trying to find out who Emily's parents were. Emily married William F. Porter (1826-1858) in 1843 in Madison Co., GA. When he died, he left Emily with 4 sons ranging in age from 2 to 13. She then married Charlton Coker; they are in the 1860 census in Banks Co, GA, and that is the last I can find of them. Emily and William were my gg grandparents. If anyone knows anything about Emily's parents, or where she was after 1860 I would love to have your help.

Your post is very old, but have you since found more about your Richard Segar in early Hartford/Simsbury? I ask, mostly due to the fact that my early ancestor, Nathan Gossard/Gozzard/Goddard was neighbor to Richard's family in Salmon Brook. Have you found Mark Williams dissertation/book called " The Brittle Thread of Life", which tells of Richeard and Abigail's life and events?

Julie

My great grandmother (I"m 55) was Rose Segar Gries. (I believe her parents to be John Segar/Sophie Albert, but not 100% sure)
She and her husband Nicholas were born in Germany, settled in PA. Rose had a sister Mary Segar Smart. I believe Rose and Nicholas raised their children in Dusquene (sp?) PA, before settling near Youngstown Ohio. I do not know how Charlie fits into this equation.
Thanks for any help!
JoAnnie

The marriage to Elizabeth Moody is incorrect. This comes from a Segar genealogy published by Charles William and Cordelia Thies Seager in 1978 and is based on an incorrect reading of the probate record. I repeated the error in the Segar genealogy I published in 1993. Since then I have found the original Moody probate record. John Moody named his daughter Elizabeth Pepper in this record, not Elizabeth Seager. The record is extremely difficult to read. You could almost make it read any 6-letter surname you wanted. But after staring at it for some time and engaging all the experts at the New England Historical Genealogy Society Library, the conclusion is that the interpretation in Cutter is correct. She was Elizabeth Pepper.

Bill Wright

Marriage of Annnie Kearney to Lewis Segar

Appears in the Terrell Times-Star, Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas, 13 October 1893 ...

The residence of C. P. Kearney, a few miles south of town was the scene of an old-fashioned wedding ceremony last Wednesday evening. It was the occasion of the marriage of his daughter, Miss Annie Kearney, to Mr. Lewis Segar, of this city, Rev. S. Fleming, of the Baptist Church, officiating. After the wedding ceremony was pronounced the guests, of which there were quite a number, repaired to the marriage feast and were regaled in a truly hospitable fashion. Mr. and Mrs. Segar left on the evening train for Dallas, where they will spend a few days, returning to this city to make their home. The best wishes of their many friends will attend them through life.

Since the last entry, I have discovered a distant cousin from the brother Peter of William Stanton. She had information that connected the Segar (Seager) line back to Richard (b.1595). There is some question in the message boards about the birth year of Richard who married Elizabeth Moody. Our lineage info has him being born in 1595. He likely was born in England. He was much older than Elizabeth as stated in the witch trials information about Elizabeth. I have to believe that 1595 is the better date for his birth.

I have wondered where the name Stanton came from, however, I have no information at all about it. I think it was common to use the last names of the mother's family as middle names, so it may be from his mother's side. Again, I have no information about that line. I was aware of his civil war action. He was slightly wounded in the head during the battle of Cedar Creek but recovered fully. Thanks for the contact. I will research the Stanton connections.

Hi; I noticed your exchanges on William Stanton Segar. He is listed in the Michigan Brown Book (Record of service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War,ca. 1902-1905), vol 36 as "Enlisted in company D, Sixth (Michigan Volunteer) Cavalry, Aug. 27 1864, at Grand Rapids, for 1 year, age 37. Mustered Aug 27, 1864. Discharged at Cumberland, Md, June 2, 1865."
There was a home recruiting drive in 1864 to replenish the depleted ranks of the original 1862 volunteers. The recruits saw harsh service in the final year of the war, and many of them were (unhappily) sent west after the war.
I had a number of relatives from Michigan in the 6th, and I descend from Thomas Stanton of CT. I'm curious if your ancestor's middle name indicates his ancestry includes Stantons, either from Thomas of CT, or Robert of RI?
Ron Stanton, in Michigan

I believe they lived for a time in the Dearborn and Detroit area but eventually settled in Red Oak which is near Luzerne and Mio which is where they lived until their deaths. Lillian passed away in the early to Mid 70s

Just came across your entry re the Segars's and your mention of Archibald Armstrong. I am a descendant of Archibald's. What is your connection?. I have most of the information on his line. If you are in their somewhere I would like to have your input. I have most of Archibald's descendants to today. Perhaps we can trade.

Harriet Segar (Seagar) m Orrin Langdon 1830 CT

I am a descendant of Harriet Segar and Orrin Langdon. Have lots of info on Harriet, anyone interested contact me. She was born 1811 in CT, married Orrin in 1830 in CT and died unknown. She was descended from on of the original settlers of Hartford Ct and Elizabeth Moody Seagar (wife of Richard and tried as a witch). Her parents were Benoni Segar and Marry Ann Harris (remarried to Edwin Williamson in May 1858). Would like info on her mother or her husband whose family I cannot find. Also, if anyone knows where Richard Seagar (Segar) the original settler, (b. 1595) came from that would be great.

Orrin and Harriet's children were:
George B b 1832 CT
Mary A b 1834 CT
Maria b 1836 CT
Benjamin Franklin b 1842 NY

I descend from a John P. Segar/Seger(s) who was born in NY in 1816 (I don't have month/day - year deduced from census and military records). I am wondering if he is the Peter you listed for Moses & Elizabeth? I have often wondered what the "P" stood for!?

The funny thing is my John had a son he named Moses (born 1848) and a son named Garrett (b. 1856). So it sounds likely that he is at least related to this family. From family oral history, John P.'s parents were supposedly school teacher and wanted him to be one too, but he refused and left home, finally ending up in Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky.

Do you think there is a connection? Where did Moses live? From what a relative told me, he came from Buffalo, but I realize that he could have took the Erie canal to Buffalo from Albany (where I know there are lots of Segers). Anyway, I will be willing to share whatever I know with you.

Thanks,

Brad
