August Seifert to Lewis Co., NY

I am looking for information on my great great grandfather, Augustus Seifert. He came to America in 1854 with his son Charles (Carl). I believe he came from a little town in Bavaria by the name of Walterhausen. I believe he married Catherine Gasser Price after he came to America. They settled in West Leyden, NY and had the following children: Marie born 1856 (believe she died young), Susanna born 1858 (believe she also died young), George born 1861 and married Mary Schmidt, Margaret born in 1865 and married Iaasc Rivers and John born in 1863 (believe he also died young).
Any information about the descendents of this family would be appreciated.
Hey Sandy, Unfortunately I cannot help you but I am so moved by your plea. My own mother, now deceased, talked about the loss of her mother--my grandmother--not thru death but because my grandfather "threw his wifeout." My mother was "abandoned" at age three and the last picture take of my grandmother was at that time. Mom talked about this often when I was very young and the loss, for her, was real and painful.
Actually, my real reason for researching our family was first to find out what happened to my grandmother,Lizzie Horn Huneke. I've located lots of other people, people I had never even heard of in my childhood, but to date, never have found but a few documents regarding my grandmother.
I like to think that somewhere my mother and grandmother are reunited in some spiritual world. My wish is that you will find your birth mother or at least family members with a memory or two to share.
Much luck in your search...
Harriett Doyle Auger

Hi Margaret,
Thank the guy who took & posted the photos. When i posted the cemetery data, i submitted a photo request, and he graciously responded. I believe it took him a couple visits, to get all the relatives. Posters on Find_A_Grave tend to be a helpful lot.
Yes, the pronunciations you quote are those that i use (high German). But low German (Platt) is just the opposite, as is French. One of my Henry-county (German) Dietrick cousins married a (French) Deitrick; same pronunciation. If i remember correctly, there are at least 6 different spellings for D??tric? within Henry county.

Where were Lawrence' papers filed? And most important, where in Germany was he from? I THINK i have him as far back as the 1840 census, Liverpool twp, Medina county OH; definitely in the 1850 census.

Truly, up until just recently, had no idea that i had ancestors planted in the great state of Misery. Came as a bit of a shock. I'm only here because the Army sent me here, back in 1969; originally from Sylvania OH.

Ken Thompson
Moline Acres (north StLouis County) MO

Hi, the photos are beautiful. Thank you so much.

Lawrence Siefert:
intent: Oct 23, 1837 c/287.
declaration: Mar 3, 1840 E/116.
Theresa was never mentioned in either document.
Lawrence had to be in the U.S.A for a period of five years before he applied for the intent. So it's possible he was here 1832 or earlier.
Most documents are spelled SIEFERT pronouced (SEE -FERT).
SEIFERT pronounced (S-EYE-FERT)
Theresa's maiden name keeps showing up as Shwindaman.

Thank you again for the photos.
Margaret
I have a Killian and Emma Seifert in my family records. I noted years earlier that many Hunekes and, I think, some Hausenbauers settled in Missouri. All those mentioned have their roots in Germany and are related to my late mother, Anna Gertrude Huneke Doyle.
We re directly related to a Robert and Frances Seifert, children of the above-mentioned Killain and Emma. Frances maarried a Grossweiller and had two girls, twins. We have lost contact with these girls so if any of this is familiar, please contact me. I am also interested in hearing back if Huneke or Hausenbauer are names on your family tree.
Harriett Doyle Auger

Hello ladies,
I would like at least the info from Lawrence's naturalization request. Was Theresa mentioned? I'm not really sure of her maiden name, or origin, other than Germany.

Here are links from Find_A_Grave, to St. Agnes Cemetery in general and to Lawrence, Theresa, & son Nicholas entries. There are also some Eck relatives in the cemetery -- Catharine's family, originally from the Defiance OH area.

St. Agnes Cemetery, Wentworth, Newton, MO
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=21...

Lawrence Seifert
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=si...;

Theresa (Schwindaman?) I used to work with the wife,Melbert, but never discussed any family ties since mine originated in Brooklyn and New York City.
Good luck and please if you have a Killian Seifert in your background let me know.
Harriett Doyle Auger

Hey, do you have any Hunekes or Hausenbauers with your Seiferts? Lots of Hunekes went to St. Louis. My grandfather was Andrew G. Huneke and Killian Seifert married either his sister or cousin. All from NY/Brooklyn.
Harriett Doyle Auger

Linda,
Too bad we aren't related. I did have the 1930 census report but not the others. They are all my relatives and I have to figure if my grandfather, Andrew Huneke was a brother or a cousin to George (age 26). Consider yourself hugged. My mother's name was Anna Gertrude Huneke Doyle. She was born in 1913 on Pleasant Ave (near 117th St. I think, in the Bronx. Funny, because she never mentioned the Bronx thing but always seemed to know people from that area. I spent two years looking over the Brooklyn/Kings County census'before I found her birth certificate which gave the Bronx birth.
Do you have any Horns or Hausenbauers in your family? How about Gilders?
Killian sounds so Irish, but then I might be thinking of Killian's Red Beer. Sorry, that must be the Irish side of me!
Harriett

I think you are asking about my husband's grandfather, John Yurovchak. He had a son named Joe who owned a tavern in Tacoma. John had a brother named Andrew and I think he had a brother named Michael and a sister named Sue. Sue's married name was Rebar. There are many Yurovchak's living in Bellingham. Again, I'm just a daughter in law and got my information from my mother in law. If you are still interested in this type of information, please let me know and I will see what I can find out. I think Wendle was born 12 Feb 1847 and died 9 Dec 1925 and is buried in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Henry County, Ohio. Wendle and Margaret Seifert are my gg grandparents. I did not know anything about Lawrence and Theresa Seifert. According to my information Wendle was born in Ohio. Wendle's daughter Mary Magdelena(Seifert) Eding was my great grandmother. I remember her well. I was 22 years old when she died.

Wendel (Wendle) Seifert was my gg grandfather.Lawrence is my ggg grandfather. I live in Ohio and will do any research for you that I can. I understand that Lawrence and Theresa(Schwindaman) Seifert were buried in Missouri. I would like to go to Branson, Missouri sometime and the area they were buried is close to that. What would you like me to look for in Ohio? Lawrence would have died 10 years before my grandmother was born. Wendel was buried in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Henry Co. Was your relative buried in Henry County, Ohio? I go into Henry County all the time. I live in Wood County near Grand Rapids, Ohio.

Hi, I have Wendel and Margaret's picture in front of a wooden corn crib with a child in the picture. Would you be interested in it? I would be interested in a copy of the death record.

Hi,
My great grandmother was Mary Magdelena Seifert and she was born 4 April 1877 or 1878. There was a question about the year for some reason. Even when she was alive my mom said she really didn't know. She was born in Henry County, Ohio, I think near Pleasant Bend and New Bavaria. I will check with my mom about that and see if she knows. I will also check to see if I have any other information which would be pertinent. We live just into Wood County. Henry County is just 4 or 5 miles west of us. My children were all born in Henry County in Napoleon, Ohio. When I asked my mom if she ever heard of Lawrence Seifert she right away said yes, but upon further questioning she said he was much younger than that (probably a grandchild named after Lawrence of 1803). My great grandmother married a man named John Adam Eding and he was of a different faith than her. They attended the German Reformed Church near New Bavaria and Pleasant Bend. It was and is out in the country. It is now a UCC church, I think. Near the end of my g grandmother's life some of the Seifert relatives took her to the Catholic Church and when she was buried a priest did the burial ceremony. John Adam Eding's father had been a Methodist itinerent minister (I have that certificate) I know that does not pertain to your family, but I just threw that in for information. Keep in touch. I will help in any way I can to find out information for you. Gloria

Did you ever find this relative? I am related to John Ciocarelli, and I know they had two kids, Russell E b. 28 Apr 1927, and Muriel Valoice b. about 1929. Russell died but Valoice is still living. That's all I know though.

Re: Joseph Seifert, Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY

Harriet,

Irish minds must think alike! I did notice on the 1920 census Killian's name was spelled with one L.

The Seiferts are my husband's side of the family. His mother was Marian Warburg McGuire. Her ancestor chart is:

John Warburg m. Elizabeth Toolan
John Warburg Sr. m Sophia Seifert, dau of Joseph Seifert and a Margaret Unknown.

Joseph Seifert's other children that are a mystery for me are Magdalena (called Lena)b. 1861, Mary Seifert b. 1865, that I am quessing married a Karcher. Joseph Seifert Jr. 1868 married an Elizabeth Unknown; Margaret b. 1869 m Unknown Ott; George Seifert b. 1881 m. Elizabeth Unknown; Jacob C. Seifert b. Nov 1884 d. Apr 1945 m. Susan Unknown. So I have alot of unanswered questions in this line. My husband's aunt may know more about Magdalena, because she has mentioned her before. The maiden names of the Unknown wives, she didn't know when I first started digging.

In 1910 a Frank LaHommedner b.1896, age 14 grandson of Joseph Sr. lived with the family. I have no idea where he came from!

The Toolan side of the family was:

Thomas Toolan m Jane Banks, dau of Patrick Banks and Bridget Dyer.

These families all lived in Brooklyn. John Warburg & Elizabeth moved to Suffolk Co., NY bef. 1930.

I don't have any of the other surnames you mentioned, but one never knows! I have to laugh at what info. family members will give you when you start asking questions! My mother-in-law would start out telling me a story about the family, then her sister, would say "Marian, that's not the way it happened!" I also found they tell you what they think you may want or what they want you to hear; in the case of my grandmother. I must have been about 15, and asked her if we had any Irish in our line? Now, Grandma (who is the cause of my deep interest in geneology)married a Surridge. She was VERY proud of her Tompkins family line, would say no she didn't think so. When I started doing my Surridge line, I discover my Surridges, having an english surname were born in Ireland and married irish woman!!! It was my grandfather's grandfather that came from Ireland to NY in 1851. My cousin said perhaps Grandma didn't know this, the other thought was she didn't want to admit there was Irish blood mixing in with that English blood!!!

If I come across any info about the lines you have mentioned I will let you know. I plan to start work on my great-grandmothers family. She was Hannah Taylor m. Benjamin F. Tompkins, she has been a bit of a mystery.

Have a Happy St. Patricks Day in Mar!

Linda W. McGuire
