Ira Seldon is my great great great grandfather. I have a postcard somewhere which he sent out as a Christmas card one year as a joke. It was a headstone for his grave. It said he wanted to write his own headstone and see what it look liked before he died. I will find it and upload it for everyone asap.

William Selden, slave

Hello Seldens! I am searching diligently for any information you might have regarding my great grandfather who was a slave named William Selden. He was born in 1835. His wife was Elizabeth, born in 1838. Both were born in Virginia. I do not know the location, nor anything about their parents. I suspect William might have taken the name of an owner. Elizabeth was a fine seamstress and, according to our family-based oral history, was "raised in the big house" (where she might have learned to sew).I know their first child was born in Washington, D.C. in 1868 and the family was in Chicago, Illinois by 1870. Any information you might be able to provide would be deeply appreciated, since I have reached the point where I seem to know so much yet so little. Ginny

Looking for Roots

Hello, I'm looking for my Mothers, Mothers family. I have just received a Obituary Memorial Book for my Great/Grandfather. My Aunt passed away last year and her son sent me this Obituary Memorial Book. His name was Frank Selden the only date I can remember right now is 1909 when he passed away. I don't think he was very old at the time of his death, and he only had two daughter Jessamine and Florence, or as my mother called her Auntie Flo. Jessamine is my Grandmother and she passed away at the age of 60 with a bad heart, she lived in Peoria at the time of her death, she was born ( I think ) in Omaha, Ne. If you have any information please email me. Thank you for your time. Rosalie

Coats of Arms For Surnames

I was asked again yesterday by a family member about the coat of arms (family crest) for the Selden's. Once again I tried to explain that the Selden's do not have a coat of arms. I took him to the College of Arms site in London and they state the following. Question: Do Coats of Arms belong to Surnames. Answer: No. There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a surname'. Many people of the same surname will often be entitled to a completely different coats of arms, and many of that surname will be entitled to no coat of arms.
Coats of Arms belong to individuals. For any person to have a right to a coat of arms they must either have had it granted to them or be descended in the ligitimate male line from a person to whom arms were granted or confirmed in the past.
Many companies offer up a crest for the Seldens but it is that of the Baker family of Sissington Kent, England.
The arms belonged to Margaret Baker's (1558-1610) family and Margaret married John Selden (1550-1617). Their son John Selden the Scholar used his mother's family coat of arms but he himself was never granted them. He never married and he did not have any family and as he was the only living son there was no line to pass a coat of arms down do.
Companies even offer the very same coat of arms to the Seldons who originated in Devon, England and have nothing to do with the Seldens.

Mary Selden 1625 married Thomas Milner

Does anyone really know where Mary was born and who was her parents? I noticed most have listed Samuel Seldon and Rebecca Yeo as her parents.
If Mary was born 1625 she was born some 33 years before Samuel for he wasn't born until the 22nd March 1658 and he married Rebecca Yeo on the 27th August 1684 in Meeth, Devon. Their first child was Samuel Seldon born 21st September 1688 in Meeth, Devon, so Mary cannot be their daughter.
We have searched and search yet we cannot find an official souce document of the marriage of a Mary Selden to a Thomas Milner. The only one we have found to date is a Thomas Milner married a Mary Taylor on the 26th June 1670.
If anyone has a copy of her official birth certificate or marriage certificate could I please have a copy.
Selden and Seldon Where do they come from and what they mean

The Surname Selden originated in mainly Sussex and Kent England and meant in old english silken willow in the valley or vale. The name as been miss spelt over the years and the main incorrect spelling is when it is spelt Seldon instead of Selden. This has made it very hard on those doing family history research. Some of the other miss spellings of Selden are: Seldene, Seldenn, Seldian, Seldine, Seldyn, and of course Seldon.
The surname Seldon originated in Devon, England and meant House/Hall/Hill and the main miss spelling of Seldon has been Zeldon and Feldon.
One of the first Seldens to go to the United States was Thomas Selden around 1630-33. It looks as though Thomas arrived there with his cousin Thomas Hosmer. There have been Seldens and Seldons recorded in south america as far back as 1701 and in South Africa in 1750. In Europe there were Seldens moving from England to Europe as far back as the early fifteen hundreds. The first Seldens in Australia did not arrive until 1838.

Hercules Selden

Looking for information on Hercules Selden. Hercules was born on the 20th July 1803 in Westfield, Sussex, England. He arrived in New York (USA) on the 7th July 1829 aboard the ship "Corinthian" from there we have not been able to find out any information on him. His Surname may have been misspelt to Seldon but he is from Sussex where it is spelt Selden where if he was from Devon it would have been spelt Seldon. Hercules is the older brother of my Great, Great Grandfather Elias Selden who moved to Australia from England in 1838.
Any information on Hercules would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Ron Selden

Denis wrote:
"Can anyone tell me where Selden's Regiment was from in the War of 1812?"

Denis:
I believe most LDS Family History Centers have subscribed to Footnote.com. I have found original pay
records and pension applications using Footnote.com at the local FHC. I believe you can find your
local FHC by locating them in the phonebook under 'Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints'. Phone & see if they have Footnote.com
They are usually open Tues, Wed, & Thurs days from 10 to 2 - then the same nights from 6:30 to 9:00.
I would put [War of 1812 Selden] in the search box.

Selden/ Calvin Seldon Webber

We are researching the Webber family from the New England states. We know that Lewis Webber was the father of two or more children born in ME or VT . His first son was named Nathaniel Burrell Webber, and his second son was named CALVIN SELDON WEBBER b. 1809 in ME.
Do you know of any connection to your Calvin Selden to any Webber's or to the New England area. It is said that Calvin's mother might be Hannah Pigeon, (banns were filed in ME) and in a census, Nathaniel listed his mothers place of birth as Poughkeepsie, NY. Do you know of any of these names in your materials?? We thought with that middle name there might be a connection. Thanks for any response. Marilyn Webber

I have been trying to find out if there is a connection between the Seldon/Selden family and the Webber family because of the subjects name. I did write message #11 but I did not write #12. It seems that something is amiss on the posting credits. I know nothing about the Seldon family but would like to find out if they were in any of the same localities as my Calvin Seldon Webber. He migrated from ME to Warren, Clinton & Highland counties in OH and then on to Scotland Co. MO where he died. Any clues would be most helpful.

Hello, and sorry for the delay in replying to you. I'm not currently doing a lot of genealogical work, so I can't really help you much presently, but I didn't want you hanging wondering what was going on. In the meantime, you might want to see if you can locate a woman by the name of Debbie Abel in New Philadelphia, Ohio. She has done a great deal of research on the Seldenrights and may be in a position to ship you a package of information on the family detailing all the research she has done over the years. If I knew where my package was, I'd volunteer to copy it and ship it to you myself. Awfully sorry for the change in circumstance, but it has been over 5 years since I posted the alert to which you responded.

Take care, and if something happens and I get the family tree material out again here in the next little while, I'll come back on here and send you another e-mail and see what we can figure out.

Mark Barnhart
Angier (Raleigh area), North Carolina, USA

Jon:
I can't help you in the book dept. but depending on how far back you have reached - I have found a lot of Selden information at the New England Historical & Genealogical Society online at:
http://www.newenglandancestors.org/

I believe the cost of membership is $79.00 but well worth it.

Tell us about your Selden line. Maybe you have some cousins on this message board.

Nan
71532.734 at compuserve.com (coded)

Jon:
I visited the NEHGS and it has quite a few hits on Thomas Selden but just two on Azariah Selden. This is what it has on his name:

New York Probate Transcriptions
Search Results
2 records were found for 'Azariah Selden' in the following documents:

Displaying records 1 - 2

Year Last Name First Name Type County of Record Orig.Page View Image More

1815 Rich Azariah Selden Washington P. 433 view more

1815 Selden Azariah Washington P. 433 view more
==================

I am attaching a file containing the "view" of the second entry - pg 433

Re: Question about source material for Seldens

My Seldens begin with a Zelotes Selden b. Dec 1834 d. 31 Dec 1868 m. 11 May 1866 Eliza Ann Rockwell

Zelotes was a son of Ira Azariah Selden m. Locelia Sparks

Ira Azariah was a son of Benjamin Selden m. ?Sarah Elizabeth Bates?

Benjamin Selden was a son of Azariah Selden m. ?Mary?

Azariah was a son of Isaac Selden m. Ester Ingram

Isaac was a son of John Selden m. Sarah

John was a son of Thomas Selden m. Felix Lewis

Thomas was a son of Thomas Selden m. Hester Wakeman

Ultimately though most of this information has been collected informally and I hope to source it all out so I can be more certain of its authenticity. This is my problem. I don't really know of any books or published material. I appreciate your reply. Are you able to access information directly from the NEHGS website that relates to the Seldens?
