WANTS TO BE TRIED IN FEDERAL COURT
RINGLING, Okla, Aug 1 -(Special)-
A contest with the United States government is resulting from an
attempt by the Jefferson county authorities to have A.J. Chapman
tried in the district court of Jefferson county for the shooting
and killing of Roy Dorrick of Walters, during the two days' basket
picnic at Ringling last week. Chapman holds a commission from
Cato Sells, Indian commissioner, to enforce the liquor laws in the
Healdton oil field and vicinity.
Dorrick was shot while trying to gain possession, it is said, of
two sacks of bottled whisky. Chapman is fighting trial in the
state courts, believing his commission entitles him trial in the
federal courts. He will return to Jefferson county for an examining
trial, however, the jurisdiction to be settled later. Dorrick's
father has sworn out a state warrant for Chapman's arrest.
