Sellwood Family

Hi, my name is Teresa Williams. The sillwood name starts in my family history in 1767 with James, illegitimate son of Elizabeth Sillwood. This is in Newton Tony, Wiltshire, England. Elizabeth went on and married William Yates and had several children.

Elizabeth's parents were Joseph Zilwood and Mary Pock. Joseph's parents were William Sellwood and Ann Girle, they married in 1692 also in Newton Tony.

If any of you on this message board tie in to this line I would be glad to share information. Also, were you aware of the variance of spellings? Sil(l)wood, Sel)l)wood, Zil(l)wood, Zel)l)wood etc.

Teresa Williams

NAME-SHIFT: SELLARD to SELLWOOD or SELWOOD

Many Sellard families, at least in the Berks, Oxon, Glouc, and Wilts Counties modified their names from Sellard to Sellwood, Selwood, or other similar derivatives.

Aparently took place soon after 1840, and through to the 1860s.

Can anyone guess why this name-shift occurred?

I am looking to advance, broaden, my family tree which "originates" in the Buscot/Faringdon district of north-west BRK. The district borders on the counties of Gloucester, Oxfordshire, and Wiltshire (180+ parishes within 15 miles of Buscot)

John Sellard married Mary Major at Buscot on 17.1.1773 at Lechlade. They had some 10 children.

My name is Robin, I was born the daughter of Jackson Sellwood of NJ. I was born in Sept. 1970, NJ. I have been searching for my father since 1995, on my own and have no luck. I contacted his sister Donna and his father, both who have claimed him to be missing since 1990 or so. No missing persons report was filed. He was last residing in Atlantic City, NJ. His name is Jackson S. Sellwood, born June 10, 1945 or so. I met him once when I was 1 years old, later that year to be adopted by an O'Neill, now I am married with my own children. My contact with my family, my aunt and grandfather is not active, as there is some turmoil regarding my birth. I apparently have two brothers out there, born 1972+, who resided for some time in NJ also. I don't know their names. If anyone has information, please contact me. I'd like to meet my father and siblings. Thanks ;)

My SELLWOOD Family - Alverstoke, UK

Hi there, my paternal grandmother's surname was SELLWOOD. The line that I know of so far starts with her great grandfather, James SELLWOOD, of Alverstoke, HAM, UK. He was born in Stubbington, HAM in 1816/7 and living in Alverstoke at the time of 1881 census, as a skilled labourer, with his wife, Ann Elizabeth WEEKS and their youngest daughter, Ruth. I believe Ruth had 4-5 siblings, including my 2xg grandfather, James (jr).

James (jr) was born in Alverstoke in 1849 and married Hannah SYMONDS in 1871. For the 1881 census, he is shown as a Leadingman "labrs" at Portsmouth Dockyard and he lived with his wife and family at 28 Holly Street, Alverstoke. I know of 7 children, but there are probably more - should know when I finally get on the 1901 census website.

My great grandfather, Harold Symonds SELLWOOD, was one of the youngest children, born to James and Hannah in 1892 in Alverstoke. Harold married Edith Maud HARFIELD in 1915 and was an Electrical Artificer in the Royal Navy. He was killed just before my grandmother was born - he died when the ship he was on (HMS Indefatigable) exploded during the Battle of Jutland May 1916. There were only two survivors from a ship's company of over a thousand. His death is commemorated on the Naval War Memorial, on Southsea Common.

Any of this ring any bells. If so would love to hear from you. Also will to exchange information if further details wanted.

Good luck hunting.
Regards

Julie Williamson
