30 June 1925 Tonawanda News
2 Killed As Train Strikes Auto Truck
Herman Hackbarth and Arthur Selover Are Victims of Accident
Collide At Crossing
Tonawanda Men Are Pinned Under Wreckage, Removed Ten Minutes Later
Two men were instantly killed at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, when an auto truck was struck by a New York Central switch train at an alley crossing in the Smith, Fassett Lumber company’s yard on Tonawanda Island.
The dead men are Herman Hackbarth, 75 years old, of 148 Niagara street and Arthur Selover, 50 years old, of 287 Niagara street. Both reside in Tonawanda.
Selover and Hackbarth were driving out of the Smith, Fassett yard with a load of alley planking for firewood in a five-ton truck as the switch train bore down on them. According to railroad men, members of the train crew saw the truck and the train came to a stop. At the same time, the truck stopped, Selover and Hackbarth apparently having seen the train.
Pinned Under Wreckage
Both the train crew and truck driver evidently believed the other was to wait and started up again with the result that they came together at the crossing. The truck was overturned .
Selover and Hackbarth were riding in the cab of the machine. They were pinned under the wreckage of the truck and the load of planking. Both were badly mangled. Selover was driving the truck.
Both men were dead when they were removed from the wreckage 10 minutes after the accident. Physicians said they were probably instantly killed.
Hold Funerals Tomorrow
Selover was in the trucking business here. He was engaged by Hackbarth to draw the plank from the lumber yard to his home. The Central switch track, where the accident occurred parallels Michigan street on Tonawanda Island and runs between the Smith-Fassett lumber yard.
Hackbarth is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank Duffy and Mrs. Leonard Keppwick, both of Tonawanda. His funeral will be held at 3:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from the late residence, Rev. E. A. Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Elmlawn.
Selover is survived by a wife, five sons and three daughters. The sons and daughters are Howard, Chester, Charles, Laverne, Levant, Onnolee, and Hulda Selover, all of Tonawanda. Selover’s funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock from the late residence, Rev. Charles R. Sine officiating. Burial will be in Elmlawn.
Coroner J. E. Helwing, who investigated the accident, issued certificates of accidental death.

My uncle Francis Selover had a family tree researched of the Selover/Slover name several years ago. The last time I saw it it was in the Rutger's Library in New Brunswick. It is quite a large volume.

I have a Bible that has it's first entry as Daniel I. Selover, born 1799 of Isaac and Ann Selover. Apparently I now have another generation to add to the tree that I am making of our branch.

Best of luck to you. Please let me know if I can be of any further help.

Carol

I know very little about my ancestry. I know that we descend from the La Selivoiure (Pretty sure thats spelt wrong, sorry!) of France and I believe we traveled to America where the name was simlified as Selover. But how my family arrived in Australia and when, remains a mistery to me. My fathers name is Norman Mark, My Mothers name is June Elizabeth and my Brothers name is Lee Mark. Can anybody help me with information.
Thank you.
M.J. Selover

Selovers from California

I am looking for the name of my great grandfather who was a Selover. He was reported to have been born in California, probably San Francisco. He was married to my great grandmother Edith Frances Perham in the 1890's or 1900's probably on the East Coast, either in New York City or in Wayne County Pennsylvania. They moved to San Francisco where my Grandmother Vera Irene Selover was born in 1904. The only ca.1800 'sSan Francisco Selovers I have been able to locate are an Abia Selover and possible nephew who sailed from New York to San Francisco on the ship the Loo Choo in1849. I do not know whether my greatgrandfather is from these Selovers. My greatgrandmother was widowed when my grandmother was a child and she returned to Pennsylvania. Abia Selover may have owned an auction house. Does anyone have any info on these people. Contact me at mcentn@optonline.net. My snail address is Jon Centner, Box 319, East Quogue, Ny 11942 and my phone number is 631-653-8943.

Thanks in Advance: Jonathan David Centner

There are 498 pages in the book including the index. I don't believe there was a "PUBLISHER" I think Mabel just published it and with the assurance that many family members would pay for their copies. If you look at the book it is just mimeographed (old word). It's not real professional looking. I have a hard bound copy that I inherited when my Father passed away in 1974 AND being the curious person that I am I had the Library here find a copy for me and it's just exactly like the one that I have, print and cover exactly... The copy I got from Interlibrary loan came from Richmond Va but there are a lot of copies of the 1968 book out there. My two brothers each had one but their's are not hardbound.
Dear Carol,

Saw you rootsweb message about Isaac Selover & early New Amsterdam info. There is a project going on right now by the Slover cousins coordinated by Millie
to do a reprinting of Mabel Hadler's Selover & Slover book.
The book has been retyped and is being proofed currently. And after her book is reprinted, the Slover cousins group will be trying to do an updating of current generations info to this 2nd edition of Mabel's book. Mabel did her first edition in 1941 and her 2nd edition in 1968. There is some info just recently (in last two years) being found about the New Amsterdam info on Seloivre & Sohier info. Millie's e-mail address is
< blanton@pldi,net >

Thnak you for your posting. Do you have a website ?
ABRAHAM (ABRAM) SELOVER (SLOVER )

Need help if available.
Trying to find out who the parents were, and the birthplace of g.g.grandfather Abraham Selover.

Know for sure he married Mary Foster Cresse 9-22-1833 in Green Creek, New Jersey.
was born <1809>
died 9-23-1862
Various documents and census reports have listed his birthplace as NJ, PA, NY.

While searching Census records for his son Matthew Marcy Selover, I noted he reported in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 Censuses, that his father ABRAHAM, was born in SCOTLAND.

All this time I have trying to make a "Mabel Hadler" connection and have been assuming he was of Dutch extraction. Would anyone know if this can be a Scotch-Irish name? Haven't had any luck on the internet.

Roz
Hi Anita, Abraham and Mary Foster were my g.g.grandparents too. I ordered a book from Quintin Publications www.quintinpublications.com for about $35. Hope this is of use to all our families.

Abraham, John Curtis Selover, Lucinda (Lucy) Selover Smith, Rowland Smith, Joseph Roland Smith, Rozanne Lavinia Smith Chouinard. This is my line. I know Martin Van Buren Selover is yours. I've entered my tree on Ancestry.com if you haven't already looked through it. Roz

I'd be very interested in purchasing a copy of this book, if there are copies that are available. My grandmother (Loretta Veryl Swick) has also written a book about our family history. Her great grandmother was Gertrude Selover (I believe Gertrude was Isaac Selover and Mehittable Bett's great granddaughter) and my grandmother has written about her memories of Gertrude. My grandmother just turned 95 and I know she'd love to read even more about her family history, as she has always been proud of it.

Lisa Meckler
lisameckler@gmail.com
