HI MIKE, My Mom's name was Sophia Semrau(Maiden). I looked at your website and did not see any of my relatives names. The spelling is different. They are two different families. The only people who could have settled in Waukesha et al, are Victor or Joseph Semrau. They are sons of my Uncle, Walter Semrau who settled in Milwaukee. He was a mason contractor. I did not keep track of Joe and Victor so I don't know where they settled. I do know Victor married a girl named Hedwig. I don't remember her last name. They had children but I don't remember their names. I have found relatives on this board, though, and I am very excited. Sorry I couldn't help. sbr189

My mother (Sophie) said that Uncle Al left Poland with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

I live in North Idaho. We moved here in 1988. Previous to that we lived in CA, where (mom)Sophie still lives. I was born in San Jose, CA. I have 10 sisters and brothers. Six brothers, David, Ernie, Daniel, Mark, Paul, Thomas, and four sisters, Tina, Tammy, Dorrie, Julie. Our father is Ernie Russell. I have two sons, Jeremy and Matthew. My husband is Ronald Benedict, married 36 yaers. I have one grandson Austin. This year we opened a nonprofit thrift store. I remember going to a thrift store with Grandma Skendzel(Sophia)when I was a young girl. Sophia died in March of 1967 from injuries from a car accident. John Skendzel died April 1979, Loveland, CO.

I met Aunt Irene(living)(Sophie's sister) in FL when I was visting my sister Tina Jansen, Hudson, FL. Mom could tell you more about the cousins, I did meet Irene's son Sam. She also has a daughter in WI.

Aunt Eleanor Nielson(living) Los Gatos, CA, has three children, Connie, Jeanie, Rick. Connie has no children, Jeanie had one daughter that recently died, her daughter had one daughter. I don't know if Rick had any children, he now lives in WI. Eleanor ran a consignment 2nd hand store.

Uncle Chet(deceased) & Aunt Jeanette have many children, Roy, Judy(no children), Sandy, Betty, there are more, Mom could tell you more about them. Uncle Chet died recently.

Uncle Henry(deceased) never married & had no children.

Uncle Ted & Aunt Oly, Mom would have to tell you about them. Neither is alive. They had a child or children? They ran a carpet store.

I am interested in any information about our family. I am just starting to develope a family tree. Do you have information of family before Michau and Rose?

We have a large family with many children.
Unfortunately we know nothing about Great Uncle Al(ojzy), apart from, that in Polish branch of the family they say he was supposedly a protestant bishop (?) . Btw - I don't remember whether I've already explained: Max(ymilian) was first name of Grandfather Tadeusz. Tadeusz was his second name, but after mariage he , probably influenced by his wife , used it instead of MAxymilian.

Linda- what part of US do You live? What's your job, family? Are You in touch with your cousins - children of your uncles/aunts?

btw- Ewa's Grandfather's names were Maxymilian Tadeusz but later he used Tadeusz name rather then Maxymilian. Maxymilian mentioned in Ellis Island registry is probably different person: he is too old - 50 at 1921 and Grandpa Tadeusz had never been at US. There were four of them who went to US - Wladyslaw (Walter), Al(ojzy), Zofia and Kazimierz, who finally returned to Poland

Best regards

Andrzej
Hallo, (Aunt?) Sue!
So much information after 8 years ...

My wife's grandfather was Tadeusz Semrau, I think the youngest son of Michal Semrau & Maria Hejnowicz), a photographer from Poznan, then moved to chorzow (Silesia). He had a son, Olech (now 89, I presume), and two daughters: Janina (died 3 years ago) and Teresa(76), which is my wife's Ewa mother. We have three children: Michal, Anna, Malgosia (now visiting New York) and no grandchildren so far.

The idea for researches born in 2000, on the Semrau & Hejnowicz family meeting (around 100 people - pls find a photo enclosed). Then I started to build a tree - now my son Michal is continuing this.

btw - the Polish names of Michal's children are: Zofia, Waleria, Wladyslaw, Kazimierz, Alojzy. And Michal's wife name was Rozalia.

If you decide to disclose your e-mail (the mine is anpor@poczta.onet.pl), I will pass it to my mother-in-law; she is very keen about the family and for sure she'll be absolutely delighted :-)

Best regards

Andrzej Poręba
This is definately familiar. You are speaking of my family. You have described my family. Read what I wrote under Hazel Semrau and you will have an accurate history of your wife's grandparents et al. I hope I can find my mom's documentation at Ellis Island. I did not look for the spelling Zofia.

My Mom was born in Poznan,Poland occupied by Germany in 1896.Her name was Sophia Catherine Semrau. She had 4 brothers, Kazmir,Walter,Al,Maxymillian and one sister,Valeria. Her Dad's name was Michau and her mom was Rose Mancynska who died when she was 3 or 4. She came to the US when she was 16. Her brother, Walter was already living here. She married John Skendzel whose family came from Poland occupied by Russia when he was 7 years old. They settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and had 6 children. Theodore,Chester,Henry,Irene,Eleanor and Sophie(Sue)(my name) My sister Eleanor and I live in California and Irene lives in Ohio. I have found documents at Ellis Island for Walter and Maxymillian. I couldn't find my Mom's. They said I may never find it because of misspellings. They couldn't read the names because they couldn't speak English. I still plan to pursue finding it. I have Photos of the ships they came over on. If you look under Ellis Island that is where I found this information. Max came on the Estonia and Walter came on the Cleveland.

I have recently received info on my Semrau family that starts with Martin (Marcin) and his wife Luidwika (Louise) Semrau or Semerau. I have found records on Martin's marriage and birth and baptism records for several of the ten children. They lived in the greater Lipno area of Prussia (now Poland). Five of the children settled in Detroit- Gustav, Adolph, Ernst, Augusta, and Louisa. The rest settled in California and Canada. If anyone would like the info please e-mail at a.caswell@att.net Thanks,Amy

Hi there~

I am Martin "Peg" Semrau's great-grandaughter. My grandma is Dorothy Janiak (Semrau). I am looking for information on the Semrau/Bodecker family. I hit a brick wall after Robert and Lena. (I'm a complete rookie!) if I understood you correctly Kevin Jost is your BIL. I met him once at my brother's wedding back in 94? Unfortunately, I never met Kenny. I've met his mother Catherine but after her mother Mary died, we lost track of her. My mom, Peggyann would love to contact her. If you are still there, please contact me!! This is new to me and I'm really excited!

Thanks,
Rebecca Kozak-Klatt
RKlatt11@yahoo.com

Linda Hello!

I hope you are still out there! My name is Rebecca Kozak-Klatt. I am the granddaughter of Dorothy Janiak (nee Semrau). Martin "Peg" Semrau is great-grandpa. I have just started researching the family tree and have come to a brick wall after Robert and Lena. I have a beautiful ring that was given to my mother by Martin. He said it belonged to his mother, who I suspect is Lena but the inscription says G.S. to E.W. 11/27/18. Can't figure it out. I can't find any information on Lena before she married Robert. I know she had a brother William Bodecker. I'm interested in especially when the family emigrated to the U.S. and if I can trace this ring and the rest of the family tree!! Please contact me, I'm so excited.

RKlatt11@yahoo.com

For the People looking for Semrau connections, I would recommend looking at SEMERAU as well.

One of my great uncles refused to spell his last name "Semerau" - always used "Semrau"

I don't know why, perhaps Semrau was really the correct spelling in the first place. Don't know!!

Thanks

Descendants of Frank and Lena SEMRAU

I am trying to make contact with any descendants of Frank and Lena Semrau. Lena Semrau was born Caroline Studemann on 22 May 1883 in McLeod County, Minnesota. Lena married Frank Semrau. In 1935 they were living in Bird Island, MN. Lena was one of my grandmother's younger sisters. I am interested in finding out what happened to Lena and her family since they lived in Bird Island.

Mary,
Thanks for responding to my request for information about the Semraus. I would be delighted to learn what you know about them. Lena was my grandmother's sister, but I don't know much about her. I am just beginning to investigate my grandmother's family. Grandma did not speak much about her family, but I do know that another sister Annie was married to a Christ Arlt and they lived in Bird Island, Renville MN, too. I look forward to hearing from you. Cheers. Gerald R.

Mary,
Just to provide some further information on my connection to the Semrau family. My grandmother's younger sister Caroline "Lena" Wilhemine Studeman married Frank Semrau. They lived in Renville Co. near Bird Island, I think. I wanted to know who her children were.
From looking at an old census, it appears that Lena and Frank may have had three children: Albert Carl (1903-1971), Ida Margaret (1908-1988), Agnes (1912-1982). There is another John Semrau who died in Renville Co. in 1941 but I don't know what his connection might be.
My grandmother, Rose, was a Semrau. Her father was Ludwig and her mother Matilda. She was born in 1874 in W Prussia and came to the Detroit area with her mother who had left her father in Germany because he was a mean man. Rose had a brother Bernard, and sisters, Mary and Clara. Rose married Johannes Lage and had 7 children, one of which was my father. Might we be related?

Anyone know of a Josephine Semrau?

I am doing research on my Hamilton family, and I was looking at a birth certificate of a William Hamilton, with parents of Frank Hamilton, and what might be Josephine Semrau. Unfortunately, the writing isn't what I'm used to seeing, so it might not be semrau, but this was my first thought. This was in WI , and the birth in question I was looking at was from 1912.

Thanks for any help,
Tony

Re: SEMRAU FAMILY TREE

Let me introduce myself - My name is Steven Semrau Jr. the son of Gene Semrau Jr. who originally posted this message. My father recently passed away unexpectedly and it was one of his ambitions to pass along an 'as completed genealogy' of our family as possible. Unfortunately he was not able to complete our genealogy as much as he would have liked.

I have recently acquired all of his things (100+ floppy disks of photos; CDs of photos; past emails; some documents; genealogy reports that he was able to compile) and I want to pick up where he left off.

I've just started the process - I have downloaded 'The Master Genealogist' program and have started learning how to use it and get this information into it. My hope is that once I get the 'tree' going I will have as much 'media' as possible attached to each person for details; such as photos, documents, stories etc.
