Notes
1. The following is quoted from "Our Ancestoral History - 1505-1986" beginning on page 59 by Selah Pomeroy Thayer, II:

The SENEY branch of our family were French Protestants (Huguenots), members of the Reformed Church of France who were forced to flee their native country because of religious war, massacre, and persecution. They arrived in America via way of England, settling in Queens Annes Co., MD during the later part of the seventeenth century.

The original French spelling of the SENEY name was Senet - pronounced Senay. Living among English speaking people, the letter y became a substitute for the t, afterwich the sound of a quickly gave place to the letter e in the pronounciation. Thus for the past nearly 300 years the name SENEY has been the English-American counterpart of the French name Senet.

Our first ancestor bearing the SENEY name of whom we have record was Solomon SENEY whose name is recorded in the St. Luke's Parish Church register, Church Hill, Queen Annes Co., MD.

Solomon SENEY named the following in his Will dated September 7, 1761. Probated April 5, 1763. Second wife, Ann (NEVIL) SENEY, children; NEVIL SENEY, John SENEY and Solomon SENEY, Jr.

All their birth and death dates were recorded by their mother in her old family bible published by J. Emory and B. Waugh for the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1832. J. Collord, Printer.

Soon after the death of her husband, Averilla (Snow) SENEY moved from Ohio to Indiana in 1826 with her nine children. They all settled on Big Blue River near Shelbyville, Shelby Co., IN. Two of her children made Indiana their permanent homes.

In 1835, Averilla (Snow) SENEY moved once again westward accompanying her seven remaining children with their families to North Missouri. Traveling by ox team and covered wagon through open thinly settled country, fording the streams and crossing the Mississippi River on the ice during the extreme cold of winter, they finally reached their destination, where they all settled in a group in what later became Macon Co. A daughter Harriet was born while they stayed in Randolph Co., MO. The family soon moved to what later became Macon Co., MO about four miles NorthWest of "Old Bloomington" where they purchased from the Government a large tract of prairie and timber land lying along Sweezer Creek and eastward, comprising several hundred acres. Here a large two room log cabin was built, and here the three youngest children, Catherine, David Marion and Hemsely Price SENEY came to bless their home. Notes
Came to Macon Co., MO in 1835. The journey overland was by covered wagon drawn by oxen. The Mississippi river was crossed during the winter months on the ice. When the SENEY family reached the river, the ice was beginning to break up and crossing it was very dangerous.

Arriving in Missouri, Ira and Susannah SENEY took up 120 acres of fine prairie and timber land about seven miles north of Callao in Macon Co., MO. Here they built a comfortable log house and established their families settled nearby. The Ira SENEY homestead was located about one quarter mile south of Grandfather Thayer's old homeplace. In 1835, when the Seney's arrived in North Missouri, most of the country was still unsettled. Hunting bands of indians still roamed over much of the territory that was rightfully theirs.

On one occasion Ira SENEY found it necessary to make a trip for salt. The salt could only be obtained at the salt springs located about 3 miles southwest of Huntsville, Randolph Co., MO. Dr. William Fort had been making salt there since 1823. The traveling distance was probley about 60 miles, through a country without roads and few settlers. The round trip would likely take four days by wagon. The children were left alone with their mother at home. During his absence, a group of Indians - men, women, and children came near the home and set up camp. The older children were much alarmed. Susannah merely gathered them in, bolted the door, saw that her ever-ready rifle was handy and waited for any hostile movement. However, the Indians were friendly and their was a great relief when Ira returned home several days later.

Someone in the area spread the news of possible Indian attack. The few settlers gathered together and awaited the out-come. Sentinels were posted with orders not to fire until the Indians approached with hostile intent. A man named Elliott was one of the men on sentry duty. This may have been James Elliott. The night was clear. An object like a big dog ambled close to the sentry. Elliott raised his gun, but someone said "Don't shoot". He lowered his gun. The dog scampered back into the forest, but soon reappeared. It came close to Elliott, who noted it's action and maneuvers were queer. He fired. The "dog" gave an unearthly screech, jumped high in the air and fell to the ground. Investigations proved the "dog" to be an Indian spy masquerading in a large black hide. A search of the neighborhood the next day revealed no sign of Indians. Perhaps he was a loner with intent of securing a scalp. (more likely looking for food)

Ira SENEY died a tragic death. It occurred on Nov 3, 1845 at a barn raising when a heavy beam fell crushing him.

Notes
Called Uncle Warren by relatives. Warren was an old Confederate war veteran. He was with Capt. Bill Anderson in the so called Centralia, Missouri massacre. Aunt Polly Ann SENEY, his cousin, stated the Seney's and Missouri people in general had suffered much at the hands of U.S. Gov't troops, and Aunt Polly Ann was proud of Uncle Warren for the part he played in defense of neighbors, kin, home and native state.

Some of the descendants of Warren spell their name Seaney. Mrs. Ethel Lenzina, grand-daughter informed me that it was her grandmother who changed the spelling perhaps because of the sound in prounciation. However, in the "Macon Co. Atlas" for the year 1923, her father's name George Elmer SENEY is spelled correctly. The family was then living on the "East Fork" of Chariton River, Liberty Township, N of Macon.
