Re: My Place in Seney Family Tree

21 May 2008 Addendum to my posting of 14 May 2001: For those who, like the original Huguenot Seney settler(s) in colonial Maryland, know French, you may enjoy my scatalogical internet name, "jemenfous". Since my last posting, my wife of 38 years, Patricia Anne Cosgrove Paulsen, b. 3-17-1943 in Chicago, IL, passed away on Aug. 5, 2004, at our home in Livingston, CA, following a nearly 2-yr. battle with metastatic melanoma. Her obituary can be found in the Modesto Bee newspaper of 7 Aug. 2004. My younger daughter, Karen Alicia Paulsen, was married on July 2, 2005, in Salem, OR, to Dagoberto Garcia, and they live in Salem; my older son, John Svend Paulsen, was married on July 7, 2007, in Seattle, WA, to Marie Tessier, originally from Minnesota, and they live in Seattle; Karen gave birth to a son, Patrick David Garcia, on Dec. 19, 2005, in Portland, OR; I'll provide furthern updates on family membership changes as they occur. So far, I count 11 generations of Seneys and Seney descendants on this side of the Atlantic, beginning with John Seney in 1694 and continuing with the birth of Patrick in 2005. My late mother, Ora Marie Seney Paulsen, would have turned over in her grave if she had known, from searching the internet, that her GGG grandmother was a native American; hopefully, we as a culture are making progress in accepting ethnic diversity.

great find! Lola has been the key person in tracking this family. She died in Washington in January of 1985 per Soc Sec death records.
The quest for Lucretia goes on. Perhaps I can find records of her other children in Bay County.
Any idea whom Sarah Seney may have married?
Do you have any information on Edward Seney, born in St.Joeseph, Missouri-probably late 1800s, died in 1955. Believe his father's name was Willian (Bill). Edward had a sister named Gertrude and an older brother named James.

He married Elizabeth Glover in about 1890 and moved first to Wisconsin and then to Washington state.
Let me know if you want/need that info.

You have more information about your ancestors than I do. My grandfather was Edward Seney, born in Missouri in the late 1890s, he died in April 1955. He was married 3 times; the last marriage was to my grandmother. He was in the military (Calvary-according to some papers that my grandmother had) and I heard that he traveled all over. I know that his father’s name was James (Jim) Seney. I seen a picture once of James Seney in a Union uniform. I think that there may have been a split up in the family (Civil war issues), half the Seney’s went out east (Virginia) and went into shipbuilding, and the other half remained in Missouri and eventually settled in the Chicago area. My grandfather had a brother named Jim and two sisters; Beatrice and Gertrude. The only other thing that I know is that my grandfather was Irish, Protestant, car mechanic and chauffer. That is about all I know as my grandfather died before I was born.

There is a park and town somewhere in Michigan called Seney, I do not know if there is any relation here. As the story goes those Seneys came from County Cork, Ireland and went into logging. If you have any info pls share. I was never able to find a paper trail, maybe some of this sounds familiar to you.
His name on records was Peter Seney (civil war and 1850 census) the name later changed to Seeney. Albany and Troy NYare only less then 10 miles from Mass.I would like to hear more on your Seney family.

Hi Ruth,
I am ever so sure about the birth dates of Gertrude and Bernice Seney. They were my great aunts and I knew them very well.
There was not a brother except one who died as an infant in Michigan. The only siblings were the four sisters, Gertrude, Edna, Gladys and Bernice Seney. None of them lived in Illinois.
I do have a John E. Seney in my computer file, b. 2-1894 in Lapeer Co., MI. He would have been a first cousin to my grandmother (Edna) and her sisters. I don't have his wife's name entered but I'm sure I have in paper somewhere. I thought he died around 1946.
You can contact me at WAPnDAP@aol.com.
Debbie

My great great grandfather was Peter Seney according to my father the name was changed over the years from Sene' to Seney and around the civil war I found it spelled it Seeney. His wife was Sophia and they were from in Montreal Canada acording to records I have found and death records. In the 1850 census for West Troy, Watervliet both Peter and Sophia show and he showes in the 1862 civil war records.I think they were French speeking as he Signed his name with his mark (X) on his enlistment papers. West Troy and Watervliet had a large French speeking population and its own Catholic church Which my family belonged to.I have gone as far as I could go with the info I had which is not to far.The other side of the family on my Grandmothers side were Poiriers which I have found unending info. Peter Seney I think tried to Americanize his name which was a common practice in those days which would account for the name changes. It is possable his first name was Pierre french for Peter
Any thing you can give me would be a big help in my search. Thank you Frank Seeney

My grandfathers's name was John Edward Seney, sometimes known as Edward Seney. I never met him as he died in 1955, however I do know that he had two sisters, Gertrude & Bernie as they did visit my grandmother, Isabelle Seney,(both sisters, I believe eventually lived in Illinois-although I could be wrong about this). I did see a picture of John Edward Seney's father, he was in a Civil War uniform.

Hello,
I have literally spent a hundred hours on this. Could anyone suggest a strategy to find this lady? She magically appears in a marriage record August 2, 1870 in Cleveland. OH, when she married William Hotes. According to the 1900 census, she came to the country in 1855, but I cannot find her in the 1860 or 1870 census. Does anyone know of Seneys who came from France around that time? Any help with this would be so very much appreciated.
Catherine

My Place in Seney Family Tree

14 May 2001 To everyone on this list: Now, I know how Alex Haley must have felt when he heard the old "griot" in Gambia fill in the missing piece of the puzzle linking Mr. Haley to the youthful Kunta Kinte. Specifically, I am the elder son of Ora Seney listed as the daughter of Ira Seney and Henrietta Tooley. Ora Seney was one of 11 (eleven) children of Ira Foster (7) Seney and Henrietta Tooley. Ora's full name was "Ora Marie (or Myree) Seney" and she was born 31 March 2001 in Oklahoma (place unknown). After becoming a registered nurse (R.N.) in 1924, she moved to California in 1936 and married my father, Svend Paulsen of Ceres, Calfornia, in Sept. 1941 at Redwood City, California. I, Lowell S. Paulsen, was born in Modesto, California, on 26 Sept. 1942, and my only sibling, Owen Stanley Paulsen, was born in Modesto, Calif., on 25 Aug. 1944. Svend Paulsen was born 24 April 1893 in Vemmelev, Denmark, and died of stomach cancer on 6 June 1963 at his home in Ceres, California. Ora Marie Seney Paulsen died of congestive heart failure on 2 March 1984 at Oak Valley Hospital in Oakdate, California. In a separate entry, I shall supply information re Lowell and Owen (Stanley) and their families, plus information re Ora Marie's kin in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, etc..
15 May 2001 Dear Ms. Moynihan, I am the son of Ora Seney Paulsen, daughter of Ira Frank Seney (#38 on Melinda Pennington's master compilation). Like you, I had heard rumors of a Native American ancestor from my mom when I was a child in Ceres, Calif., in the 1950s. However, until these genealogical sites were posted to the web in the past few years, I had no concrete information substantiating these family legends. Indeed, my late mother (she died 3-2-1984) despised minorities, describing American Indians as "dirty and untrustworthy". Be assured that these are NOT my sentiments, although I understand the cultural factors which conditioned her thinking during her childhood in the early-20th-century Middle West. Three problems in documenting the Native American link for Solomon Seney, Jr., may be (1) the mobility of the Seney "clan" from Maryland westward to the Kentucky and Ohio frontier in the late 18th century, (2) the disorder resulting from the transition from British to independent U.S. rule during the American revolution, and (3) the later loss of many records during the Civil War of the 1860s. Although I have only recently begun to pursue my Seney family roots, for many years I have watched members of the Triplett family, a much larger and, in many ways, more prosperous and more highly educated group, experience the same frustrations in trying to trace their origins from England to Virginia to Kentucky to Missouri and eventually California. I, too, would be enthralled to confirm Solomon Jr.'s marital status. Sincerely, Lowell S. Paulsen, 1453 8th St., Livingston, CA 95334 (209)394-7548 E-mail: lpaulsen@evansinet.com

His name is in the St.
Luke's Parish Church Register, Church Hill, Queen Ann's County, Maryland. Also his
Last Will and Testament: Will of Solomon Seney of Queen Ann's County and Province of
Maryland, 7th September, 1761.
The Seney branch of our family were French Protestants (Huguenots), members of the Reformed Church of France who were forced to flee their native country because of religious war, massacre, and persecution. They arrived in America via way of England, settling in Queens Annes Co., MD during the later part of the seventeenth century.

The original French spelling of the Seney name was Senet - pronounced Senay. Living among English speaking people, the letter y became a substitute for the t, afterwich the sound of a quickly gave place to the letter e in the pronounciation. Thus for the past nearly 300 years the name Seney has been the English-American counterpart of the French name Senet.

Our first ancestor bearing the Seney name of whom we have record was Solomon Seney whose name is recorded in the St. Luke's Parish Church register, Church Hill, Queen Annes Co., MD.

He was a French Trapper.
Quoted from the Seney Book: Solomon Seney, Jr. was a youngster of
adventurous spirit according to James M. (Big Jim) Seney, his great-grandson
(born 1844, died 1925). Solomon went to Western Virginia where romance
blossomed with a young Indian girl of the Shawnee Nation, who became his wife
and gave him a son named David Seney.
try http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/e/l/Melissa-Kel...

Something I forgot to put in, Manna A. King was born in Michigan, as was his mother. His maternal grandfather is listed in the 1860 Fed. census for St. Clair, Burtchville, Michigan.

Hi Connie, Here is what I have, the first is from a newspaper clipping from Dec. 1905. After five days of anxious waiting shut in by the by storm that came down upon us last week, Mr. Manna A. King and Miss May E. Seney were finally united in marriage on Sunday evening ,Dec. 3, 1905. The wedding took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bamford, four miles southwest of town. Mr.and Mrs. Bamford stood up with the couple, while Miss Marie Fitzpatrick made a pretty ring girl and also sang a solo preceding the ceremony. The bride was attired in a handsome brown gown with rich lace trimmings. The groom was dressed in the customary black. At the close of the ceremony Mrs. Bamford served one of the finest dinners for which she is derservedly famoas. The bride and groom went to housekeeping at once in the groom's home, and their many frieds will wish them many years of happy married life.
The marriage took place in Sawyer, North Dakota. The Mr. and Mrs. Bamford named in the clipping are my great grand parents. The groom, Manna A. King is my great grandmother's brother. I am not sure when Manna and May moved but I have information that places them in Tethrow Butte, Oregon in the 1930. I know they had at least 5 children and I have pictures of some of these children at different ages. The 1930 federal census has May E. age 45, she was born in Iowa, her father in Canada and her mother in Iowa. Could she be related to your Seney family? The census states that all the children were born in Oregon, the oldest is 21, the youngest 4 months old. Other newspaper clippings in 1937, place some of the family in Redmond and Corvallis,Oregon . These clippings mention M.A.King and the children but not May. I have not tried to trace this branch yet. Let me know . Thanks!
