Hi: Was reading about Mattie Lee Hicks and Roy Preston Hicks in your post. These were my grandparents. Mattie Lee Hicks did not have a date for her death because she was still living at the time you saw the tombstone in Humboldt. She passed away a couple years later, it was February 16, 2002. She wanted to have the tombstone ready to her liking. As for Mattie Adair Hicks she is not the same person.

Re: Eleazer Gilson - Mary and Abigail Center/Senter

This post is a follow up to a reply I made 19 Oct 2008 entitled “Re: Eleazer Gilson – Mary and Abigail Center/Senter,” regarding the 5 January 1832 Morgan County Illinois marriage that a transcriber had for Willard R. Cinter and Susan Paragon. When I saw the marriage posted, I was very excited, as Willard and Susan Center’s son Edward was born in 1832 and mentioned that I was going to order a copy to verify the contents.

I received a copy of the record in October 2008, but only just now am posting the information about it. The transcriber made a valiant effort to try to figure out whom this marriage record was for. When I ordered it, I discovered just how difficult it was to interpret that record. A picture is worth a thousand words, but I’ll have to go with the words here.

Center looked like it could have been Carter corrected to be Center by changing the ar to be en (or possibly an). Even in today's world, most people spell my last name correctly, but occasionally they spell it Carter or occasionally Canter, even if I have just spelled it for them. What is also interesting is that Willard R. Center's estate record has his name spelled Center in every instance except one when it is spelled Canter.

On the side of the record, Susan's surname looks like Parmin, with the in overwritten to look like er, making it look like Parmer.

On the reverse side of the record, neither surname is overwritten with anything. W. R. Carter is written clearly, without any overwriting. Susan's name is a little different. It looks like Susan Parmes, with the type of flourish on the s making it subject to interpretation as a possible r. Reading the Rs is interesting because each r in Carter looks different than the other and neither r in Carter looks like the r in the middle of Susan's last name. Plus the final character in her name looks like an s or r with a flourish. The final r in Carter does not have a flourish.

So the record is subject to interpretation. I hope to find other records to help clear the problem up.

Lee Anne
Re: Henry and Rebecca Senter's daughter (s)

I do not know what happened to Elizabeth. The listing with her birth date is the only reference I found for her (plus the census). I do know that Stephen Senter is the father of Henry (I have proof if you haven't found it). As to Mary Simms being his mother: Stephen's wife was Mary. The reason I think she might(and I say "might") be a Simms is that Stephen Senter witnessed the will of Sarah Sims in 1770 in Johnson Co. NC. Sarah had been married to Joseph Simms. Joseph and Sarah had daughters Rachel and Mary and Stephen and Mary Senter had a possible daughter Rachel (Married Lewis Jones in Wake Co. NC) There's a lot of "ifs" there but at least something to work on.

Henry Senter and Rebecca Avent are also my ancestors. I have only found one daughter for them: Elizabeth born 21 Sept 1791. There are no daughters mentioned in the record of children taken from Rebecca's bible. I have also seen the possibility of another daughter, Mary Mourning, but have not found any connecting evidence for her either. I doubt that there were two daughters as the 1800 census shows one daughter and the 1810 census shows one daughter.

Re: Eleazer Gilson - Mary and Abigail Center/Senter

Hi JudyG26:

I wish I could help, but I don't know about the Gilsons. I do have a couple of other spellings for Center: Cinter and Scenter. I saw Scenter while researching early Centers/Senters in New England.

It would be interesting to know where my husband's Center line came from before NY. It is said that the line was from Scotland, but I do not know where they were after Scotland and before NY.

My husband's Willard R. Center had a daughter named Abagail. She married a Goltra. Willard was born 1806 in NY. His wife Susan Paragon was born 1812/13 in KY. Son Edward R. Center (b. 1832) and his siblings were born in IL. Some of the brothers of Willard were born in OH.

John T. Senter, residence NH, and Oliver Senter, unknown residence, received military tract land via warrants in 1817 and 1818 respectively in Pike Co. IL, but I have not researched yet to see if there is documentation connecting them to Willard. In 1817 and 1818, there was no Pike Co. IL. It was Madison County during those years. Pike Co. was created in 1821 and changed a bit until 1825, when it appears to stay the same until present. See http://maps.ilgw.org/ilall.htm. So I can only assume that the land that John and Oliver Senter were awarded was in the part that later became Pike Co.

Pike Co. is adjacent to Morgan Co. where my husband's ancestor Willard R. Cinter married Susan Paragon 5 January 1832. Willard was later in Sangamon Co., Mason Co., Menard Co., and Logan Co. IL. Note that some of these moves were border changes when new counties were created. Parts of Sangamon Co. became Menard Co. and Logan Co. IL in 1839. Part of Menard and other counties became Mason Co. IL in 1841. Note also that Willard R. spelled his last name Center. I have ordered the marriage record to verify the transcription and marriage details.

I am hoping to find out who purchased John T. and Oliver Senter's land later. I plan to order the warrant/land record also.

Lee Anne

I know this is an old thread, but if you would like, I have pictures of the grave sites for William Tandy Senter, Sr, William Tandy Senter Jr., DeWitt Clinton Senter(reconstruction Governer of TN), and some other Senters(13 of my relatives). I am a great-great-great- grandaughter of William Tany Senter, Jr. Most are buried in the Senter Memorial Cemetary, located in Morristown, TN. The land for the cemetary and church was donated by the Senters and was the original site of Panter Springs Methodist Church, which was built with money donated by the family. Panther Springs Methodist Church has relocated and the land is now occupied by another church. I live about 200 yards from the cemetary. I was born and raised in Morristown and my family still owns some of the land that was part of the original Senter farm which has occupied the land for about 6 or 7 generations. Lots of Senter history in Morristown, (Hamblen County) TN. If you are interested in viewing the pictures, just let me know and I will email/mail them to anyone who is interested.
Need Help in Identifying Family in Grayson County, Virginia Photo

I would be most appreciative of any help in identifying the family in the attached photo. A larger version can be seen at the following link:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mckate/mccarterpage...

According to a notation on the back of this circa 1910 photo, the woman pictured is a sister of Mary Jane Senter, daughter of Calvin Halbert Senter and Rosamond Pugh of Grayson County, Virginia. Mary Jane's sisters were:

Elizabeth Mahala Senter b.1860 d.1938 m.1877 James Pierce Gore
Clara Ellen Senter b.1863 d.1941 m.1886 Robert Lee Halsey.
Emma Robena Senter b1866 d.1904 m.1886 James Addison Young.
Amelia Ann Senter b.1868 m.1886 Marshall Brown Young.
Minnie Sophina Senter b.1873 d.1923 m.1891 Robert Jackson Copenhaver, m.1906 Robert Delp.

Thanks for any help!

My Aunt Dorothy Halsey Harndon daughter of Roy Halsey, son of Robert and Clara does not think this is Robert & Clara, as her grandfather had a good head of hair all of his life. and this gentleman in this picture is looking pretty thin. Clara Ellen Senter was very much a red head as I hear.

Good Morning,

Your Elva Viola Oberlin (daughter of Obed and Alice Oberlin)is a older sister to my grandfather Walter Dewey Oberlin. I can assist you with your Oberlin lineage back into the early 1700's if your interested. She was born in Stark County Ohio as well as her son Paul. I can remember my father George Oberlin talking about Paul & Mildred many times. They must have known each other quite well. The name seems to have been spelled Senter. I see it most often that way. Elva later married a Milton Kline after her her first husbands early death.

Cuz,
Larry Oberlin

As stated in the response from Jack Millner, it has been a family tradition that Freeman Senter was the son of an American Revolutionary soldier. Millner’s version has the name being given because the Americans had won a great victory over the British on the day he was born a free man. The version that I am familiar with says it was because he was born in 1776 making him a free man – not a 2nd rate colonial British citizen.

To my knowledge, it is only an old family legend.
