My name is Mari Rodriguez and my father's family was from the Canary Islands. My father(Felipe Rodriguez)is almost 87 years old, and is in hospice care here in NYC. Before he dies, I would like to know if there are any DNA tests available regarding Canary Island ancestry that he and I can each participate in. I have many questions regarding my Canary Island ancestry--for example, do I still have relatives there, am I from Sephardic Jewish and/or Guanche lineage? My cousins and I have redhair and my great grandmother (who was from the Canary Islands and lived in Puerto Rico) had blond hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. His father(my grandfather)was Felipe Rodriguez and his mother(my grandmother)was Lucia Perez Gomez. Lucia was born in either the Canary Islands or Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on January 16,1899 but I believe that her parents (Juan Bautisto/a Perez and Cecilia Gomez) were definitely born in the Canary Islands. The family names are Rodriguez, Perez, Roman, Duprey, Bautisto/a, and Chacon. My father states that some of his family may have also been from Barcelona and that some moved to Martinique. I do not have any further information at this time but would like to communicate with anyone who is doing similar research. I was born and live in New York.
