We are also tracing the Serra Family of Rome, NY. It appears that your grandfather Louis and our grandfather Dominick were brothers. We are trying to identify the other family members and when they came to Rome, NY. We know that Anthony (Tony) was killed in Rome in 1933 in a dispute. We believe there was another brother Thomas to Louis, Dominick, and Anthony, but we do not know anything about him or his family. We would be grateful for any information you or your aunt Elsie can exchange with us. We lived in Rome for several years and know that Elsie lives in Virginia as well. Please respond.

I very much appreciate your prompt information. Interestingly, my Grandmother's older brothers went to Argentina when she was a young child...one was Emilio Pizzera. I am not sure of the other brothers name.

My Grandmother was placed in an orphanage/convent with her older sister who died there of TB. My Grandmother wrote to her brother in Argentina...he was able to arrange for her to leave the orphanage/convent and stay with a family..then arranged for her to marry Angelo Serra...a few years later they went to America and settled with brothers of Angelo Serra in Monongahela PA...which is the area where I grew up (16 miles south of Pittsburgh).

I hope this is some information that will be helpful to share with your cousins ...and yes Piemonteis was spoken in my house growing up although I have lost the beautiful language from having no one to speak it with for many years!

Emilio Pizzera's wife(Angelina) lived in Imperia, Italy..on the Rivera. She wrote to me until she passed away more that 10 years ago.

I hope your cousins can help me find some family in Italy, but whatever the outcome..corresponding with you...someone who has roots in the same town as my family in Italy makes me feel very happy.

My grandfather came to Argentina in 1892 with 2 brothers. The oher 6 brothers rested there. My surname is Andreone and we have a tradition that have been living here for more than 100 years, for example the language, so the piemonteis. Serra is the surname of many people in Argentina. Wow....I have waited a long time hoping someone would contact me one day!!! My family surnames are SERRA and PIZZERA...My Grandmother, Clementina Pizzera, was placed in an orphanage there after her parents separated and her mother (Her nfamily name was Mata) fled to France. My Uncle Americo Serra who was killed in WWII is buried there.

Do you correspond with your cousins? Have you visited Monteau Da Po?

I think my husband's family come from Corleone, Palermo, Italy.We have seen different spellings of the name. His Grandfather spelled Sardigna, and the rumor was after he died, his grandmother changed it to Sardenga. His grandfather was born in New Orleans and died there. Serra's Sicily to NY

I'm looking siblings and parents of Domenica (Minnie) Serra. She married Antonio Calandra and they lived in NYC. Dominica was born 4 July 1879 in (according to my late Aunt Helene) Santa Margarita, Sicily. I found her on the 1910 NY Census as head (Minnie Calandra) and it lists Grace Serra, mother as a member of the household so I'm guessing that is her mothers first name.

In a document written by my late Aunt Helene she writes-
"Dominica Serra - born Santa Margarita, Sicily
Born 4 July 1878 Died Sept 10 1965 age 88 (died in New York)
Had 4 brothers father charles (don't know if this is a brother that is also a priest?) Joseph, Natizio, and Anthony (died in the African war) sisters, Anna, Patequlia. Joseph came to the US first in 1882 - Charles Natizio and sisters were all tall except Joseph who was short like his father"

I would really love to know who her siblings were and who they married. Where they were from in Sicily and who their parents were. I have many old photos that I would be more than happy to share of this family. According to my Aunt Minnie's mothers maiden name was Boneniuti (hard to read may be spelling it wrong).

Well actually....He was born Miguel Jose Serra, in about 1718, on the Island of Majoica, Spain. Which at that time in history was governed by Italy.

Junipera is his clerical name when he became a Franciscan, his family is and was Italian.

His decendents are part of my family tree. He was a first cousin of my great grandmothers.

My father just died on Nov. 21. He was 87. His grandparents were from the Canary Islands. His grandmother had blond hair and blue eyes. They called her Mama Chila. I never got to meet her. She moved from the Canary Islands to Aguadilla. I have redhair and brown eyes. In June 2008, through genealogy, I found 8 cousins who also have red/brownish red hair from my father's side. My father was in hospice care. As I sat watching him and help care for him, thoughts about his spirituality came to me. I began wondering if he had Jewish roots. That is when I posted the query you replied to. My father and his father were born in Puerto Rico in Aguadilla. Where is your family in Puerto Rico from? My name is Mari Rodriguez and my father's family was from the Canary Islands. My father(Felipe Rodriguez)is almost 87 years old, and is in hospice care here in NYC. Before he dies, I would like to know if there are any DNA tests available regarding Canary Island ancestry that he and I can each participate in. I have many questions regarding my Canary Island ancestry--for example, do I still have relatives there, am I from Sephardic Jewish and/or Guanche lineage? My cousins and I have redhair and my great grandmother (who was from the Canary Islands and lived in Puerto Rico) had blond hair and blue eyes. My father was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. His father(my grandfather)was Felipe Rodriguez and his mother(my grandmother)was Lucia Perez Gomez. Lucia was born in either the Canary Islands or Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on January 16,1899 but I believe that her parents (Juan Bautisto/a Perez and Cecilia Gomez) were definitely born in the Canary Islands. The family names are Rodriguez, Perez, Roman, Duprey, Bautisto/a, and Chacon. My father states that some of his family may have also been from Barcelona and that some moved to Martinique. I do not have any further information at this time but would like to communicate with anyone who is doing similar research. I was born and live in New York. I speak Spanish but do not write it as well as I write English. If you communicate with me in Spanish I will do my best to reply in Spanish. Muchas Gracias.

Family stories imply that I am a descendant of Serra family. My great-grandmother was a Serra.....a great niece of Junipero's brother. My Aunt Sophia still had a document from the Pope where he blessed seven generations of Serras! Unfortunately, she was put in a home years ago and no one knows where her sons stored her things. EEEks!

I am trying to locate relatives. As a child I was told that I was of Sicilian descent, but everything I am finding points to Spanish descent. I was also told that my family stems from both Palermo and Messina. I know of a cousin Lucia who is a surgeon in Rome and Nicholas, Hertha and their son's Bruce and Robert Serra from New Jersey.

I tried to search the Jewish roots in my family history but haven't had much success.

I know that my dad's great grandparents came from the canary islands and settled Puerto Rico in the early 1900's. They had blonde hair and blue eyes. family members say that the family from the Canary Islands were Jewish. But I have no way to prove it and I would really like to. My dads surnames are Perez and Leon, which are apparently common marrano last names.

My father was a serra. I WAS told we were a descendant of father serra too. My fathers side is sicilian. Love to learn more! My fathers mothers maiden name is grace bommarito. My fathers father name is frank serra. They moved to US in the early 1900's. They met in The states. My grandpa came with his brother Salvatore serra. My grandma came with her sister Catherine Bommarito. They married two brothers married my Grandma and my aunt catherine. They lived in detroit michingan. My Aunt catherine and uncle frank moved to san diego california in 1959.

I am a grand neice of Luigi Serra and his brother who married my grandmothers sister's Carrie and Mary Moccia who were living in NY at the time. The Serra brothers were farmers in Italy. Uncle Louie traveled back and forth to the U.S. from Italy often and visited his wife's family in New York.
