Service family - Ireland > Australia

I am researching my grandmother's family roots from County Antrim in Northern Ireland. My GGGGGrandfather Joseph Service was born in 1798 at Ballyeston to Thomas Service (a farmer) Agnes Bonner. Thomas had a brother named Robert, but that is as far back as I go. My GGGGGrandfather Joseph had 2 other brothers John born 1800 and James born 1815. Joseph married Mary Smyth Williams in 1830 and they had 7 children all born in Ireland. Joseph and Mary came to Australia in 1867, following their children out here. If there are any links out there please contact me as I have an elderly aunt who is "the mad family genie" and I would love to surprise her with some links to her Service family. Thanks in anticipation.
Michelle Guinery Gleeson in Sydney Australia.

Margaret and Horatio were my great-grandparents. Margaret was born 1837 at London Creek, SC, near Gaffney. Her parents were James Service(d. ca. 1846) and Margaret Jane Wilson (1795-1875). They were from Ballyeaston, Co. Antrim, Ireland. The family is Scotch-Irish. James and Margaret had three sons: John, Thomas, and James, and three daughters: Eliza, Mary Ellen, and Margaret. I have some dates and spouses. James' brother Robert Service and wife Mary lived nearby in London Creek, SC. Would like to know European background of family and arrival in U.S.A.

SERVICE

I am just returning to my family history research after a long absence. I would like to construct a family tree for SERVICE.

A good start would be to locate ancestors and descendants of an Agnes Service, who married a John Conway. They had a son William Conway, born in 1875 in Belfast, Ireland, who died in 1959 in County Durham, Ireland.

It is my ultimate aim to have a worldwide family tree for all people of the SERVICE name. I would appreciate any family tree information from anyone in the world who shares this same name within their families as I hope to make connections with them all.

If anyone wishes to send me information, either a Gedcom or a file attached to an email would be very welcome. I would be quite happy to send anyone who requests it all the information I have in return. I run Legacy 6 as a genealogy programme on my computer.

Thanks for your assistance, everyone. .
SERVICE - Letter from Scottish Tartans Society

I recently recieved a letter from the scottish tartans society with info on the name service!"There is an old Stirling family of Service which may be decended from William Servatur or Le Servetur a Burgess of Stirling 1296." "The name spelt Servays was found in Roxburghshire in 1296 while Robert Service of Ayr was noted as a servant to a Notary 1662."
"The Service tartan was last woven in the 1940's for a Major Service who emigrated with his family to Australia, after the war." "Later a branch of the Stirling family moved to Aryshire c. 1700 and then on to Glasgow as ship builders. This branch thought of themselves as part of the Lanarkshire Douglases."maybe this will open some avenues for someone!good luck.

Service, Servis, Everett

I'm at a dead end (literally) and need help. I'm trying to find out what happened to Anna (sometimes listed as Annie) Everett, whose married name was Service (sometimes spelled Servis). She was born in New York in about 1835.
She came out to Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, in April or very early May 1879. One version of the story is that she was a mail order bride (from my late grandfather). Another version of the story is that she was a sibling/cousin of Adaline Everett (who was married to Joshua B. Servis' brother Galusha Servis (from another cousin)).
Anna was married to widower Joshua B. Servis in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska, on May 7, 1879. Anna and Joshua had no children. (Joshua had a son, Adelkir, from his previous marriage, but "Delker" pre-deceased his father, as he died on October 31, 1887, and was buried in "space 3" of the 4 space lot in Bennet, Lancaster Co., Nebraska). According to the June 12, 1885 census, Anna was ill with cancer and was unable to perform ordinary household chores. Husband Joshua died May 12, 1890, just a few days after their 11th wedding anniversary. Joshua was buried in "space 2" of the lot in Bennet...which placed him in between his 1st wife, and their late son Delker. Anna filed her late husband's probate, sold off what little they had and was gone from the area apparenly by May 29, 1890, as that is the last date where I can confirm she was in Bennet, Lancaster County, Nebraska (or anywhere in Nebraska, for that matter). She is not buried there. She did not die there. She apparently had no friends there. Where did she go?

Service / Servos of Oxford Co., ONT, Canada

A month ago or so I went to Ancestry.com and on a lark did a search for my great-great-grandfather William Service who married into the Cloughley's. Lo' and behold there's a genealogy extending back to Heinrich Servos of Segendorf, Germany. Very good to know, BUT is there any documentation? The census records I've found so far seem to match and indicate that William's alleged great-grandfather Jacob Service emigrated to Canada between 1830 and 1850. Does anybody know more about this family?

About William Naboth Service:

Married Minnie Cloughley and settled on a farm near Burgessville. Both are buried in Burgessville Baptist Cemetery. They had two children: a son Willie and daughter Marion who were fraternal twins. There is an interesting family story concerning William's death and burial. It's also rumoured that he was a first cousin to poet Robert Service (which I rather doubt). Daughter Marion Service married my great-grandfather Gordon Wills Sr.

You also might want to check Oxford County Census. I also have a limited number of Services in my files. Amy

Service name origin

30 years ago, I started tracing my Service
family background. This all stemmed from being
asked whether I was related to Robert Service
the great Canadian poet. I quickly found that
the answer was no. While Robert Service was
born in the country area between Scotland and
England, I have found no link that would
make Service a Scottish name. Indeed, not an
English native name either. The only link
that seems positive is the Servis name came from
what is now Germany and originally may have
come from Serbia. Please see other note on
bulletin board re derivation.
