I am the sister of the Pam Kemp that you are referring to. She gave up her research at some point never telling me that she was doing this. I began researching the Travis/Seviers in 2007. My sister never gave me any information that she found. Please contact me at kd.endecott@rocketmail.com So you and I are most definately related, I just don't know exactly how.
I hope this message reaches you, I can see that your post was in 2000. William Henry Travis and Ora Belle Sevier were my grandparents. Their son Robert Henry Travis was Mary June's brother. He was born Sept 13, 1926 in Blackwater MO and died Nov 7, 1992. He married Georgia Lee Wyatt in 1949. My mother is still living at 79 years of age. I have been unable to contact any living members of this family. I have not been able to find much information on Henry Hamlet Traviss, father of William Henry. We are cousins. Please contact me if you get this message. Thank you so very much.
Good MOrning Jerry,

I am not using my own computer that has my famioy records. In process of moving. My son put my records on a new 2009 family tree program, now I can not find what I want so he will be putting it back on myh old program

Now saying that, here is what I am able to give you at this time but it is only a drop in the buckiet to what I do have.

John Field had two sons, Richard and Joseph. Richard had at least two sons.

Jermiah who was born @ 1846 and died Oct. 10, 1854 at the age of 8. I do have a little more on Richard's line but can't find them for now.

Joseph Field had the following children: John Taylor Field who married Margaret Campbell in 1822, Reece Bowen, Joel, William B., Green Clay and Richard Taylor.

I could not find the wives of these men for now.

Joe Field who would be a cousin of Jerimah who died Oct. 10, 1854 would have been his cousin. He married Eliza Catherine Hunt. He was born @ 1802 and died Oct. 13, 1888.

I am able to send you a list of Joel and Eliza children if you so desicre. However, I do have a lot more data that I received from a Field family historian who was in the process of compiling a Field family book. I am not able to find his name etc. at this time. It may be in one of the boxes already at the other place. Phillip Campbell in Lebanon, Va. should know him and perhaps know how to get in contact with him.

The Field family is not part of my direct line. I descend down through Richard Henry Campbell son of Abraham and Winney.

If you desire more data, please contact me at abcfhist@hotmail.com.

Beth

Good Morning,

Not sure what I sent the other day but please contact the library in Lebanon, Va. You will find a great deal of information there. Also, the Rusell Co., Va. rootsweb should have a great deal of information in their archives.

Saying that I will give you a little of what I have found.

John (note not James) Wesley Craig Campbell married Mary E. Countress. I have seen both Clairborn Co., Tn. and Russell Co., VA. as his birth place but both accounts say he was born in 1831. Do you happen to have the exact date of birth? Also both say that he died in 1899. Perhaps you might have the exact day on that. Mary E. was born in 1831 in Va. and died in 1902.

Have listed as their children

Charels B. born in Russell Co., VA. Feb. 8, 1859

Charlton born in 1861

Elbert Craig born in 1866

Amanda born in 1868

Alice born in 1871 and died in 1940

Gellaane (male) born in 1874

Edward Wesley born in (now I really question the follow porson and data . The reason being, it just to much like
one of Richard H. Campbells sons family line and this could be another error but into my family tree while I was in Card. Rehab, but this is what I have He was born May 4, 1882 in Great FAlls, Ks. and died Mar. 21, 1962 in Wilderville, Josephine Co., Or. He married Mary Anne Speck
Now are you able to verify or disprove the above?

Emmett who died in 1963.

Now I have Alice Campbell born 1871 and died in 1940 who married Joel Frank Fields who was born @ 1860. I do have a great deal on the Field line.

Listed as their children are

Lawrence born in 1892,
Worlely Scott born Feb. 6, 1896
Leon born in 1904 and
Viola born in 1907

Worley Scott Ffields married Bertha Ellen SAlyer who had at least one son Carl.

Now, remember, all the above data needs to be verified but do use it as leads.

I will be able to send more later.

Beth

Good Evening,

It is good to hear from you.

Now, my family is in the process of moving me right now. My computer is down, books packed etc.

Now, you are so very close to so much of our family history.
I would highly suggest that you contact or even go to the Public Lib., there in Legbanon. When I visited tghere @ 8 years ago, one of Henrys G. G. ? ? ? granddaughters made a log (small twigs, copy of Henry and Janes home place before the sideing was added to it.

Henry and Janes, and Abrahams place is about 7 miles S. E. of town and I believe it is on rd. 657 but I could be wrong. I tried to find it on Google earth but could not tell for sure, but if I'm correct, you would take highway 19 to Lebanon to highway 765 and turn left. You will come to a "Y" in the road and the left part of the "Y" would be highway 657. It sould be around 5 miles and you would see a two story white home sitting back from the road with other small outbuildings and a couple of big trees in the back side yard. That home should be Henry's and Jane. Then just a very short distance across the street sitting quite way ways back in an old two story log house which is the remains of Abraham and Winnies home.

I anyone cares to contact me at abcfhist@hotmail.com, I will send you better information when I get moved and also where to find more information.

Beth

She married John Henry Fields. John Henry Fields' mother was also a Campbell. I would love to have any information you have about Winny Sevier. I know by what I hae been told that she was the daughter of John Sevier, but not sure about her mother. Was she an Indian? My email address is hmamalois1@embarqmail.com. I live in Abingdon, VA and I also would like to know where the Henry Campbell and Jane Greenwood home is located. Also, where was the home of Abraham Campbell and Winney?

Lois Haynes

Hi Beth,

Abraham and Winnie's son James Charles Campbell is my great grandfather. I have heard the exact same story from three other people who had the story passed down in their families, as I had, that Winnie was the youngest daughter of Gen. John Sevier. I met Philip Campbell, whose mother owns the old Henry and Jane Campbell farmhouse and he confirmed the story, saying that Winnie's mother had left her at the Campbell farm because she couldn't care for her.

I am willing to take a DNA test to prove or disprove the link to John Sevier. I am hoping that a proven descendant has already done it for comparitive purposes.

I live in Florida, but travel to Virginia to do research from time to time.

Jerry

I am a descendant of John's brother, Valentine Sevier. I have information taking the family back to Don Juan de Xavier (de Jasso), but it is very sketchy. There are a lot of blanks not filled in between when the family left France and when they came to America. A John Xavier (Sevier) married a Mary Smith in London England. Not sure about events before that. All I know is that it goes back to Spanish/French nobility (Azpilcueta and Xavier)

One of the Coffman's (my g-g-g-grandfather was married to a Miller before he married my g-g-g-grandmother Pearman

I've checked my database for a Dorsey or Van Meter. Do you have alternate spellings for the latter just in case they are there.

My Hardin County folks migrated from there to Grundy county, Missouri about 1862 if that helps any but some of the Coffman's and Pearman's stayed behind.

I'm researching the Seviers that came to Sullivan County, Missouri about 1836, William W. SEVIER. But I record anything I find on any of the Seviers ... always looking for a connection to Valentine and John Sevier.

I have the following on James and Rowena -- not much but ...
Rowena Jane SEVIER... daughter of
Elbridge Gerry SEVIER and Mary Caroline BROWN.
No other data on Rowena.

Elbridge was born 19 Mar 1805 and died in 1864 in Roane County, TN.
Mary Caroline was born 27 Feb 1810 in Snow Hill, Green County, NC and died about 1894 Roane County, TN.

Their names and the fact of their marriage was taken from
book "Andrew Jackson and Early Tennesse History" by Samuel Goron Heiskell, see pp. 201 & 202. This page has a lot of info on their children (they had 11).

Birth & death info is from One World Tree so is not considered a strong source.

Elbridge was the son of James SEVIER and Nancy CONWAY.
I have more data on them if needed but you probably already have it.

I met Philip Campbell, whose mother owned the property when I was there in 2005 and he confirmed the information posted here.

I am interested in taking a DNA test to prove lineage from John Sevier. Does anyone know of any proven descendants of John Sevier who have contributed DNA? I think we have a Sally Jennings/Thomas Jefferson type of situation here and I'd love to find out conclusively if our family tradition is accurate.

If anyone wants to correspond with me about it, feel free to contact me at hench1@aol.com

Jerry Halstead

Conflicting dates on emigration for Rowen's husband, Henry William Von Alderhoff. I have written before that on the 1900 census report, Henry states he arrived in the United States in 1830. I have found conflicting information which states he came in 1838 and that date makes more sense, considering the fact that he came after graduating from Bonn University at age 19. I have quite a bit of information about him posted on my website (www.fitzgeraldsisters.com. He is an extremely interesting man. He spoke 9 languages fluently.
Henry William von Alderhoff was born in Germany in 1818. On the 1900 census he states he came to the US in 1830, so he would have been 12 years old. He moved to Texas before moving to Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was a school teacher his whole life and spoke nine languages and was very well respected. He married (his first wife died) Rowena Jane Sevier who was the granddaughter of the first Gov. of Tennessee. At the urging of his children, he moved to Dallas in 1872."

I believe he did have a school in Tennessee and then moved it to Nashville during the Civil War.

On the 1900 census, he is living at the home of his daughter, Blanche Alderhoff Babcock. I believe he died shortly after.

Glynda

genismyhobby: I spent the evening looking at my Hardin County info and like you, I didn't find any of your family in my tree. It would have been fun to find we were cousins. The Van Meter's (Van Metern) (Van Metre), with about 100 people, were one of the first groups to colonize Missouri, arriving in 1780. They had come down the Ohio River from Virginia. They settled in the area that would become Elizabethtown and also in Glendale. Many of them are buried in Glendale.

We certainly got off from Rowena, didn't we? Good "talking" to you. Glynda

Jennifer, you'll find your proof in the 1880 Federal Census of Cumberland County, Kentucky.

(Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: Kettle Creek, Cumberland, Kentucky; Roll: T9_411; Family History Film: 1254411; Page: 197.4000; Enumeration District: 35; Image: 0096.)

John F. (sometimes seen as Francis and sometimes Frank) was said to be 3 years old, therefore giving a birth year of about 1877.

In the 1910 Census, he is in Quartz, Greer County, Oklahoma.

They spelled his surname as "Seveer" in 1880 and as "Severe" in 1910.

John F. was a distant (I think) cousin of mine on both my parent's side.)

William W. (or G.) Sevier was my 3rd great-grandfather - John W. Sevier (1824-1897); James Washington Sevier (1855-1940); and his daughter, my great-grandmother Anna Elizabeth Sevier, the only child of his first marriage to Nancy Margaret Bundridge.

My questions is about the mother of John W. Sevier, the father of William Sevier. John W. Sevier appears to have 4 wives, and I'm uncertain which of them was the mother of William Sevier.

Did you find John Alexanders parents. He is my husbands great-great-grandfather. We are wondering if there is any connection to the first governor of Tennessee?

Rowena Jane Sevier daughter of Elbridge Gerry and Mary Caroline Brown Sevier. Her grandfather was James Sevier and her great grand father was Gen. John Sevier, 1st Governor and one of the founders of Tennessee. Sevier County and Sevierville in the great smoky mountains of Tennessee is named for Gov. Sevier. Rowena's grandfather James left her a set of teaspoons in his will. He was the County Clerk of Washington Co TN for almost 50 years. Just today for his birthday, I gave my son a document dated 1790 and signed by James Sevier as the Clerk of Washington County. Rowena's father was a deputy clerk. Now this famous man she married Van Alderhoff, did he have some type of school on a mountain in Chattanooga, TN?

He is my gggrandfather too. I have never been able to make the connection to Gov. Sevier. I have been in touch with Nancy Sevier Madden (one of the authors of the Sevier Family History book) and here's part of what she wrote me: "Unfortunately, one runs into some counties where the local records have been destroyed in court house fires. From the little scraps of records gleaned, my inclination is to believe he was descended from either Robert Sevier or Thomas Sevier (maybe both if they were father son) who have records of Revolutionary service & took up land on Little Sandy Creek in what is now Preston (or Barbour) Co., W. VA. Some of the family also appear in early Monongalia Co., VA (now W. VA). Frederick Co., VA, covered a huge area in the early days and was sub-divided numerous times. Earliest records I've seen are about a William Sevier & wife Catherine who were involved in a dispute about land. Then was a Robert Sevier who was a Revolutionary soldier with three small chilcren whose wife Margaret applied to the Federick Co., VA court for financial aid in 1778. Robert was probably the one who acquired the land on Little Sandy Creek (later?).
