According to Mrs. Cleadie B. Barnett, a student of the N.B. Sewells, she was apparently the daughter of Nicholas Sewell and Eunice Hawthorne, although the Elizabeth S. identified by Mrs. Barnett seems to have been born ca. 1793.

I would be pleased to exchange more if you email me at eben att prodigy dott net.

Eben W. I have not identified Hannah Greeley's parents but should probably spend some more time trying.

Your timing is perfect, because I am still dotting t's and crossing i's on the second volume of the genealogy of this family.

I would like to hear more about your old homemade document and photographs and everything.
Hi, I know you posted this message years ago, and who knows if you're still interested? I wondered if you found out any more about the Sewalls. I'm just starting, and I'll tell you what I have. I have a very old homemade document of the "sewall family", looks almost like a sampler, but drawn and painted in, probably by a child. It has the family of John Sewall (b. 1784) and Hannah Greeley (b. 1785, d. 1818). It lists a number of children, but some of it is illegible due to age. I can read the names of three kids, Sarah b. 1809, Thomas b. 1813, and Philip b. 1818. It also has their marriage date, 31 Dec 1807. Then, I have two photographs, one of Benjamin Collins (1824-1893) and the other of his wife, Hannah Sewall (1824-1899). I'm trying to find the line between that Hannah Sewall and John Sewall and his wife Hannah Greeley, but no luck so far. There has long been a rumor in the family that we are related to Horace Greeley, and I haven't been able to find him, either! Any tips?

Re: Do You Know These Sewalls?

Eben - I'm pretty sure Frank Sewall, Jun 1862 died in 1900 between June 12 (census date) & Sept. 19 (wedding date), unmarried. His sister, Amy Peters Sewall married at 35 that year do to a great tragedy according to family legend. Since her Father is mentioned on the Marriage certificate, he was still living. On the 1900 census Mary (Fairbanks) Sewall is listed as having 3 living children in 1910 only 2. And both Amy and her younger sister Mary are living at that time. So my believing is that Frank past and wouldn't be able to support parents and his 2 spinster sister, which was why my Great Grandmother married a wealthy widowed Merchant on Sept 19, 1900. - If I'm wrong let me know please.

Seek descendants of Samuel Sewall/Sewell/Showell of Somerset Co., Maryland, for the Sewell DNA project.

Samuel Sewall was in Somerset Co. by 1687. Five children, Jonathan, Arnold (Arnoll/Arnwell/Arwell), Charles, Mary and Ann, one of whom at least, Ann, was married in 1695.

He may have been the Samuel Sewall who was a witness to an indenture of Henry and Susanna Lowe Sewall of Calvert Co., Maryland, in 1688.

Hope to evaluate whether Samuel Sewall of Somerset Co., Maryland, is the same as Samuel Sewall (b. say 1635, living in London in 1655, living in 1664 but not known where), son of Richard Sewall of Nuneaton, Warwickshire, and his wife Mary Dugdale.
Hi Don !

Your Sewells are, I seem to recall, descended from Dominicus Sewell. The article discusses the DNA results of several descendants of Henry Sewall. To my knowledge, no male descendant of Dominicus Sewell has participated in the DNA study, so it is not yet possible to say what that family's DNA profile looks like.

The raw results of the Sewalls (and one Sewell) whose DNA is described in the article, as well as the results of many unrelated Sewalls and Sewells, may be seen at

www.familytreedna.com/public/sewellsurnameproject/default.as...

If you run across any of your male Sewell cousins, encourage them to participate. The cost is reasonable and it would be valuable to have one or two profiles from the Dominicus Sewell clan. Once a profile or two is available, we would better understand whether or not the two clans are related.

Best,

Eben

Sewall Family DNA Project

The status of the Sewall family DNA project was published in the Summer 2010 issue of "American Ancestors," the membership magazine of the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston.

The results substantiate connections among most Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire Sewalls and many Canadian Sewells, but reveal an (as of yet) unexplained discrepancy between the DNA of the Massachusetts and Maryland branches of the family.

The results also confirm that the father of Col. John St. Alban Sewall was indeed Chief Justice Jonathan Sewell of Québec.

Volunteers for the project -- especially descendants of Henry Sewall of Maryland (1625-1665) -- may write the author at eben at prodigy dot net.

The poem was written by my 3great-grandfather Lewis Sewall. He published (probably self-published) two volumes of poems while living in Alabama during the first third of the 19th Century. The likely recipient of the poem was Stephen Sewall of Winthrop, Maine (1794 - 1880) who was a greatX2 grandson of John Sewall and Hannah Fessenden (see: http://www.robertsewell.ca/lewissewall.html)

Dominicus Sewell is found in the published vital records of Beveryly, Mass., 2 vols. (1906) -- his marriage, the birth of two children, the baptism of two others, and the death of an unnamed infant.

The evidence for Thomas and Mary (Norton) Sewall being the parents of Dominicus is circumstantial. Thomas and Mary are found in the published Gloucester vital records, 2 vols. (1917-23) -- their marriage and the baptism of two children. The date of birth of Dominicus Sewell comes down only in family tradition, as far as I know, but it fits nicely between their marriage and the first baptism.

Eben W.
   Hi Everyone,
I've managed to drill down my ancestry to Samuel Sewall of New hampshire (1794-1871) and wife Betsey Whitney.
Does anyone know the names of Sam's parents and whether he had any brothers and sisters?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Rick
