Thank again NJO!

I must have found the census about the same time as you yesterday! I spoke to Philip's daughter last night and she can remember her father talking about a sister but not of the name Madge. However I expect this one is a sister and called after her mother. She did confirm that Philip had stayed with a couple but she wasn't sure if that was their nameds.

My daydreaming leads me to believe that the 2 children were fostered out while Madge and Frank were following their acting careers. Have also been told that they joined a Gilbert and Sullivan Company in Edinburgh. A google of their names brings up a few press cuttings etc.

Philip was a fisherman too so now we know where he picked up his trade from! And perhaps the Raithby's all came north together with the children. (Day dreaming again!!}
Regards
Anne

Hi again
You have a curious one here.
I see the marriage on scots peops in 1913, but the only sign of a Philip AYRTON is in London 1901 where he is shown as a nephew of a Charles RAITHBY b1857 Hull a fisherman, his wife is an Alice b1857 Birtly Durham. The curious part is that there is a niece in the same household, a Madge AYRTON aged 7
Both Philip and Madge are enumerated as born in London Middlesex although neither birth shows up in the GRO.
Charles RAITHBY adds to the mystery as I can find his birth but no marriage or in any other census.
Not much in the way of sightings of a Frank AYRTON either (that fits the bill anyway).
The only other Philip born around the same time is the son of a Sutcliffe AYRTON of Rochdale
NJO

Thanks for getting back. Haven't much dates to go on. Their son, Philip was married in 1913 at the age of 24 in Aberdeen. (He was a fisherman) Press cuttings show Frank and Madge performing in Sydney 1890/1891. Family lore says that Frank's parents (in England) didn't want him to be an actor so he ran away!!!

Anne

Sorry, Dennis, I've got nothing about your Ron Seymour.

As clarification... This thread dates back to 2000 and was originally an offer by me to look up people in my copy of "A History of the Seymour Family" by George Dudley Seymour and Donald Lines Jacobus (1939).

As this book fully documents only six generations down from the colonist, Richard Seymour (1639), it doesn't include Seymours who came over from England later. Nor does it include many Seymours who lived after the early 1800's or from regions outside of the northeastern U.S.

Since my original posting, I have transcribed many pages from this book (with more to come) and placed them up on my web site: http://s560.com - I encourage anyone interested to pop on over there and take a look around.
There is only one "Alexis Seymour" listed in "A History of the Seymour Family". However, he was born in 1798 - so it can't be your guy.

In addition, I don't see the name "Alexis" in any of my online Seymour data.

Sorry.

--Jim Seymour, The Seymour wiki: http://s560.com

I have a Betourne/Turner line that I am working on. I believe there is a Simard connection. All come from St. Constant to Plattsburgh and some did go to Wisconsin. My main interest is to prove or disprove a marriage between Paul Betourne/Turner sometimes refered as Pierre/Peter and Marie Simard. This couple was named on the death certificat of Celest/Sally Betourne, my ggrandmother. I have tracked these families and will be happy to share all with you. Paul was born about 1792 so I suspect Marie about that time or a little later. Thanks for you post and hope to hear from you.

Do you have any more to go on?
I presume he left England at some point? When and who with, do you have any relatives names?
Anything may just give a clue
If you are saying his name is SEYMOUR-HALL it may indicate he was born and registered as a HALL or SEYMOUR, he may not have been registered as William Charles but just William or even William C
There are one or two possibles in the 1851 so let us know if you have any more on him
William Seymour of Bermuda in the 1600's

I am looking for information on the ancestry of William Seymour who went to Bermuda in the early 1600’s. According to Ancestral Records and Portraits from the Colonial Dames of America:
“In 1617 William Seymour was foreman of the Grand Jury of Assize Court. In 1619 he was Sergeant Major under Governor Nat. Butler, and in 1623, he was Councillor for Sandys Tribe. The last official mention of him is August, 1628.”

This senior William had two sons:
“In 1638, Captain William Seymour, Jr., was Councillor of State and Commander of Paget Fort, 1653. The last reference to him is May 3 and 4, 1653, as Councillor and Commander of Southampton Fort.” William, Jr. married Elizabeth Chaddock, daughter of Governor Thomas Chaddock.

“Hon. Florentius Seymour, was Governor-General of Bermuda, 1663 to 1668, and 1681, in which year he died, on November 3. Bermuda was at that time part of the Virginia Colony. He was Councillor of State and Captain of Southampton Fort, 1661.” Florentius married Ruth Paynter.

These Seymours may have been connected in some way with the Seymour family prominent during the reign of Henry VIII; however, I have not yet been able to find any reliable data on Ancestry.com or elsewhere. If anyone has any information, clues, or suggestions, we would very much appreciate it!

Thanks,
Carol
