Had nine children including John and Frederick. He died in Harrison Co and after his death his wife went to Vermillion Co, IL to live with son John SHAFER. Frederick was b. Harrison Co, 1789 and moved to Pendleton Co, KY after his marriage where he farmed several years, then moved Gallatin Co, KY for several years. Then in 1836 he was in Decatur Co, IN, then eight years in Tipton Co., IN. His son, William Henry Shafer married Elizabeth S Gullion of Switzerland Co, IN and they moved in 1854 to Cass Co. Nebraska. Frederick and wife, Sarah Jones Shafer went to live with William Henry and died in Cass Co, Nebr in 1867 and 1865.

My Shafer's were located in Veedersburg, Attica and Covington Indiana. To date, I have not been able to determine if my G-Grandfather, John William Shafer had any brothers or sisters. I do know that his father was Peter, who was born in Kentucky. This is my brick wall.

Long shot but here goes -- I am researching Shafer's who lived in Evansville, Indiana. I only have them back to Henry Shafer (also found as Schaefer) whose family claims via census info was born in Pennsylvania. He married Rozina Renschler in 1863 in Vandberburgh County, Indiana. They had at least 2 children -- Jacob Henry "Jay" Shafer (my great grandfather) and Carrie Shafer (married Charles Arnold in Evansville) and possibly a 3rd child -- George Shafer.

I have been at a brickwall on Henry and Rozina for a very long time -- the Shafer name is a tough one!

I am researching the family of John Wesley Shaver/Shafer/Shaffer of Indiana and Kentucky. He was possibly in the 1850 federal census of Gallatin Co., KY living with a Rachel Shafer who's husband might have been Hilton.
John was born 12-1833 in Switzerland Co., IN his parents were probably David and Jeminia Shaver/Shafer/Shaffer. John married Martha Ann Cardwell/Caldwell/Cord in 1861 in Gallatin Co. Curry

Cynthia Shaffer Moore Fisher was my husband's great grandmother through her daughter, Lessie. Her death certificate indicates that her birthdate was Jan. 24, 1870. She died in Charleston, WV on Nov. 20, 1956 at age 86. Her son James H. Moore is listed as Informant.

The 1900 census lists Cynthia as Cintha. Her husband is William, and their children are: Ardena, Osie, William, Jesse, and John.

Blame the census-taker for misspellings and other things that drive us crazy. We were told that Cynthia was born in Roane County, yet I can't find anything for her there.

I'm replying to an old post, so I sure do hope you get this.

Sorry, no, I'm not familiar with Arkansas records. My ancestors settled in Pennsylvania and stayed there. You could try posting a message on the Sebastian County message board, asking how to access court records: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.ark...

Or you could try subscribing to the Sebastian Country mailing list and asking for help there: http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/usa/AR/sebastian.ht...

-MJ

When you say you have the marriage certificate, do you mean the application they filed with the county to obtain a license to marry or the certificate issued as proof of marriage? A certificate will contain significantly less info than the application they filed.

Do you know where in Indiana Frank was born? You might be able to at the very least narrow down your possibilities by searching for a Frank Shafer born in/about 1852 in the 1860/1870 census using the town or county where he was born, if you know it. Sometimes you get lucky and find only one family with a child who meets the criteria you used to search.

I had the same difficulty with finding a church marriage record for my g-grandparents. I had no idea what church they were married in. The only info I had was that contained in the civil marriage application, which luckily contained a copy of the form the priest filled out and returned to the county to verify the marriage took place. On it was the priest's signature. No name of the church. I sent a note to the diocese and asked where this priest was stationed at that time of the marriage, and they were able to track down that info and provide me with the name of the church.

I feel your pain in hitting brick walls when it comes to finding the info you're seeking. I have a set of g-grandparents who immigrated to the USA in 1893. I got lucky in finding their parents' names on their death certificates (and hopefully that info is correct), but as for finding *where* they were born, I can't get past "Germany." Immigration and naturalization records only say Germany, the marriage license application says the same, the church marriage record doesn't say anything other than "he married her on this date before these witnesses," baptismal records for their children and just as bare-bones in content, and census records say Germany like all the rest. Very frustrating.

One thought that comes to mind for your situation is that perhaps you should look into obtaining baptismal records for Frank's children. Most times, the godparents/sponsors were relatives (usually siblings of the parents), and you may be able to identify Frank's family in earlier census records using the names of those godparents with the surname Shafer.

-MJ
To find his parents' names, you'll probably have to look for his marriage record (not just the index) from the church and the county. Marriage records often have the names of the groom's/bride's parents. Since you know Frank amd Mary Lou were married in Sebastian County, obtaining the civil marriage record (preferably a copy of the marriage application) won't be difficult. A death certificate may also give the names of his parents.

Any chance that Mary Lou had a brother or cousin named John? In the 1880 census for Sulphur, Sebastian Co, Arkansas (ED 186, page 5), I found a Frank (age 24, born in Indiana, parents born in Bavaria) and Emily (age 18, born in North Carolina) Shafer living with a John Melchor (age 18, born in North Carolina). Since mistakes are pretty common in census records, Emily could have been written down instead of Mary Lou and Frank's age could be wrong.

Do you know if Frank had any siblings and what their names were? This would help find Frank and his family in the census for years prior to him marrying Mary Lou.

-MJ

I am researching a Shafer (same spelling as yours) family from Vanderburgh County (Evansville)Indiana. Parents were Henry & Elizabeth born in Germany. Children include Frederick, Henry, Elizabeth, John F. and Margaret. Margaret was the youngest I have identified -- born in 1854 in Evanville. A long shot but your never know.

Ron,
I have no idea where in Indiana he was born, or lived, I do know that his parents were born in Bavaria, and he (probably) was in Sebastian County, Arkansas by 1871.

I do have the marriage certificate from the county, but it doesn't list anything except their names and ages. It doesn't say what, if any, church they were married in.

You are correct, John was her brother. Her name was incorrectly listed on the 1880 census.

His death certificate lists "Unknown" for parents' names, etc. I have no idea whether he had any siblings, etc. No one in the family knew anything about him, apparently. He died when my father was (his grandson) was about 4 years old.

I'm trying to get a Fort Smith federal court case record from 1871. If it's the correct Frank Shafer, that may tell me something.

Any other ideas are appreciated.

Thanks, MJ. Can you tell I'm new at this? LOL.
Anyway, those things you listed are what I already know. I'm looking for anything earlier than that. I haven't been able to find anything about how he got to Arkansas, his parents, etc. Ideas?

Shafer (any variation) came from Bavaria to Indiana prior to 1860

Looking for Shafer, entered US possibly in Virginia, settled in Indiana. Had a son named Frank born in Indiana about 1852-1856. May have moved to Indian Territory around or before 1870. Frank is my great grandfather. Frank was married to Mary Lou Melchor. They had three sons: Monroe, Henry (possibly John Henry), and Andrew. The sons were born in Arkansas.

I have a copy of their marriage license. On the same form it notes the date that they were married. I will, thanks to your info, go back and see if I can locate an application.

I have no clue where in Indiana Frank was born, or any other information. I had always mean told that Frank and Mary Lou were born in Germany or Holland. When I started researching I consistently saw Indiana for him and North Carolina for her. I'm not even certain that he didn't change the spelling of his name. I have no information about any of his relatives.

Do you have any idea how I can order a court record from the National Archives, other than online? I think I may have located him in a 1871 criminal case in Fort Smith. The online system won't accept the order because I do not have the case number.
