Jacob Shaffer, born 22 Feb. 1805 in Paint Twp., Som.Co., Pa., son of David & Catherine Faust Shaffer, moved to Ill. where he is listed on the Sept. 1850 census in the Town of Oneco, Stephenson Co. His wife was Sarah Ripple, , born 7 May 1807 in Paint Twp., Som.Co., Pa. Their children were Israel, Ephraim, Angeline, Lavina, Christina, wife of Levi J. Schrack; lucinda, wife of John Geyer; Cyrus, Jacob, Matilda, wife of Israel Fuller; Cornelius, Franklin, Alfred, and Sarah Ann, wife of Nickolas Glasser. Sarah Ripple Shaffer died in 1862 in Black Hawk Co., Iowa where Jacob , 65 yrs.old, is recorded in 1870 in Cedar Falls, Lester Twp. with his second wife, Hannah (Eastman),48 yrs.old, and in the home is Emma Shaffer, age 9 yrs.old. Also in this home is Mary A.Lowell age 27, born in Pa. and Solomon Lowell, age 35 born in N.Y. I do not know the connection of Solomon Lowell or if May A. is a daughter to Jacob Shaffer. Perhaps they are the relatives of Hannah Eastman, Jacob's second wife. Isreal Shaffer, the eldest son was a minister of the United Brethren Church & farmer in Leoni, Butler Co., Iowa where he died in 1883. Franklin Shaffer, the youngest son, born in 1844 in Som.Co., Pa went to Iowa with his parents and after serving in the Civil War he went to Neb. where he in 1873 he built the first house in Alma, he later is said to have built the largest Hotel west of Hastings and called it the Shaffer House. In 1920 Franklin's family, with his wife Dora ( Eldora) are listed living on First St., Alma, Neb. Franklin Shaffer died on 6 May 1926. Several of his brothers, sons of Jacob all born in Som.Co., Pa., served in the Civil War where they died. If anyone has information on the children of this Jacob Shaffer I would really appreciate sharing and comparing the data to be added to my David Shaffer Genealogy.
