There are 2 Granville Shaffer/Shafer's listed in the Federal census.
One in Taylor Co, WV listed as Granville Shaffer, age 35, born Mar 1865. Wife Cora, age 30 and 3 son's, Freddie age 7, Earl age 5 and Dewey age 1.

One in Lewis Co listed as Granville Shafer, age 55, wife Ella, age 55 and a son named Hillery age 16.

There is also an E. C. Shaffer listed in the 1910 Preston Co, WV census, age 52, wife Lydia age 44, 4 daughters,Lucy A. age 26, Ethel age 22, Clara age 17, Grace age 11, 2 son's, Roland age 14, Roy or Ray age 8.

There is also an Emra Shaffer listed in the Social Security Death Index, born Nov 2, 1900, died Aug 1975 in Preston Co, WV. Social Security number was 218-03-0482 and was issued in Maryland. So Maryland would be a good place to search. You can obtain his Social Security Card Application by writing to the Social Security Administration . That's how I got the names of my great grandfather's parents. The fee was $10.00 back then, but like everything else, it has probably gone up.

Hi, We are related through the wife of Joshua Shaffer: Catherine (Kay) Hagerman. The went to Kansas from Van Wert County, Ohio. Catherine was a daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Hoppis) Hagerman of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. I have quite a bit of information on the Hagerman family, including a photograph of Catherine. I'm a descendant of her brother Isaac Hagerman, who ended up in Kosciusko County, Indiana. Let me know if you're still interested. This isn't complete, but here is some information: http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/10259866/person/-610838727?ei...
I lose Julia Sheffer/Duncan/Duncanson after Lillian married. But up to then they were all in Nova Scotia for sure. Cecilia Sheffer nee. Maughn was born in England according to her son Joseph on her death certificate. I don't know when her husband John Sheffer died, but according to her son's records John Sheffer was born in Nova Scotia.

Though Guatemala sounds WAY cooler. :)

I've been out of the loop on this for a couple of years due to my husband's illness...but I'm back. Since my last post I have ordered DNA results - anyone who is related to the Johannes Jacob Schaeffer family - with sons William bn ca 1746 in Germany, and John bn ca 1755, Daniel, etc., now need descendants to check with. The William Shaffer in Shenandoah is the strongest possibility I have had in 40 yrs, but. . . need more info and proof. Have found church records in Lebanon Co. PA now - then Berks/Lancaster, PA naming Elizabeth, sister to my 2nd g grandfather Peter Shafer, bn 1780 in PA...a son of "Wm and Mary" - Her dates are on target, but we need more proof -- I have a researcher working to see whether or not this William was in fact the William of Shenandoah...and if Mary was Anna Maria Moyer. Stay tuned.

Hi Deborah,

Have you been able to find out any more about your Shaffer line? I do not know if there is a Hubert or not but I can say I have never heard the name. The names most common with my Shaffer's were Lewis, Walter, Newel and I believe there was a Joshua. I know they were farmers and before migrating to Kansas they lived in Ohio I believe. I know my greatgrandfather originally married Catherine Ireland and one of Catherine's Ireland's brothers married my greatgrandfather Shaffers sister so the children they had were double cousins. This is all I know and I wish I had more information. Let me know what you have found out about your line. Maybe it will help me find more on my Shaffers.

Thanks

Gailla

I am trying to find out if my great grandfather had any brothers or sisters. I don't even know who his parents are. The only info I have is from a 1930 census of Hammond IN where is says he is living with George and Lillian Saims. It says they are his adopted parents but I wonder if maybe Lillian is his real mother and George is his step father. I would appreciate any info.

My grandmother Virginia Shaffer, lived on Shaffers corner. There were 5 or 6 brothers from Germany, and they all settled on the street named Shaffers corner. It would be my Great Grandfather who came from Germany with his brothers. Iwas back there in 1979, and at the top of the street there is some typy of soldier monument. I hope this helps you, let me know

He died 13 Dec 1803 in Mecklenberg Co, NC. Could this Frederick possibly be the son of your Jacob? I have been searching for his roots for years. Thanx. Donna

I started the "Alexander & Mary Elizabeth (Peters) Schaffer & Connected Families" Family Group website at myfamily.com and would love to hear from any of their descedents and their connected families. Those who have already joined, and I are having a great time. We are meeting new family members we have never met before, renewing friendships with those we have not seen in years, sharing past & present pictures of our family, being able to see how those of us have grown & changed over the years. We are usually checking in with each other on a daily basis. We have a family tree in which we are bring up to date with the new births, marriages, and sadly the deaths of our loved ones. When you join the group, you find your line, and you bring it up todate with your family. With this website, we have discussions about our family and what they are doing, telling stories that have been handed down by our parents & grandparents, posting family recipes, and so much more. Your last name does not have to be "Schaffer" you just have to be a descendent of Alexander & Mary Elizabeth (Peters) Schaffer, and a connected family by marriage to one of the Schaffer descendents. We would really like to have you join and be a participant in our family group. If you are interested, you can post a message here, of your interest in our family group and I will be notified of your post. I will need your direct e-mail so that I can send you an invitation, which you must then accept. Once accepted you can join the discussions, post your family pictures, family recipes, add your family to the family tree, and so much more.

I am Patricia Ann,
Parents - Leonard Ruel & Dorothy Ann (Schaffer) Saye,
Grandparents - Carl Edward & Canzetta (Collett) Schaffer,
Great Grandparents - Edward Henry Clay & Hedwig "Hattie" (Graef) Schaffer
Great Grandparents - Alexander & Mary Elizabeth (Peters) Schaffer

If you are connected to this family, The Alexander & Mary Elizabeth (Peters) Schaffer & Connected Family Group hopes to hear from you real soon.

Lilian C. Oicle nee Sheffer, Julia Sheffer, Ceicilia Sheffer/Shaffer Nova Scotia

Hello!

I am looking into the Sheffer/Shaffers of Nova Scotia, Queens County, Bristol/Milton.

Lilian is my g-g-g-grandmother. On her marriage records it states that the marriage was witnessed by a Julia Sheffer. Married in 1884.

I cannot find Julia Sheffer or anything about her family. Possibly her name is Lilia and she is not a mother, but another family member?

Lilian's middle name is Cecilia. There is a family in the area that fits with appropriate ages, and names that have been certainly in the family a long time. Ceicilia Shaffer/Sheffer, was living in 1871 to 1881 with her son Joseph Sheffer/Shaffer who married around 1886 to Blanch Wentzell - they had a daughter named Jennie who is appears never married and died in 1952.

In 1881 and 1871 Cecilia and Joseph seem to have lived with two girls named Lilia (Lilian) Duncan/Duncanson, and a Lucy Rafuse. Lilia/lillian Duncan/Duncanson seems to have lived at least from 9 to 20 with Joseph and his mother Cecilia/Ceicilia. I suspect that this might mean that she is the granddaughter of Cecilia, and something happened to have her go live with her widowed grandmother.

The dates seem about right, the names seem right, and the names that Lillian Sheffer/Oicle gave to her children seem pretty consistent with naming. I'm considering that Lilia Duncan/Duncanson might have decided to call herself a Sheffer since that was the family she grew up with.

There is another family with consistent naming in the area, Edward Sheffer who married Deborah Hyland in 1865. They have Herman, Theodora (listed as Dora Cecilila on her birth registration), and Estella. Dora/Dorathy is another name that passes down through my line along with Lilian. Perhaps Edward Sheffer is an uncle of Lillian C. Sheffer? Perhaps Edward and Joseph are both sons of Ceicila Sheffer?

If you have any connections to these people and can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi,
My Grandmother was a Shafer...and my great frandfather.
My grandmother's name was Ruby Pearl Shafer, born in 1911. She has two sisters named Gladys and Ocie. Their father was Frank Ottis Shafer, born in Ohio in 1884. His wife Effie Pearl Davidson, and this twin boys, one in 1917 and one 1918 of the flu. My grandmother was eight(Ruby Pearl Shafer) at the time and went to stay with reletives in Dora and Charles Jones and is listed as niece along with Lina Davidson 62 who is listed as Mother-in-law in the 1920 census. Do you remember any of these people. I am fairly sure we are related.
Thank you,
Paula Baggett
