He was from Georgia. He was the son of Jonathan Sandlin, Jr. He and his brothers were adopted by Richard and Lucy Shamblee after the passing of Jonathan. He did have a sister named Mary, born 1838. Of the six Sandlin children, I believe the only one that didn't take the Shamblee name was Francis, as he was already grown and out of the house.

Carolyn,

Thanks for the information in your reply.
Do you know who Grandma Mary Shamblee's parents and where they were from? Did she have brothers and sisters and who were they?
I have not been able to find Mary connected to any Flanagan's in the census records. Also, Flanagan can be spelled many ways so that also has added to the difficulty.
Anymore information you have would be appreciated.

This would throw Mary"s birthday off by about 15 yrs. I quess. according to the 1900 census
gw gave his age has 56 yrs and mary gave her age has 36yrs. She would have been born during the Civil
War. This family may have been some relation to Mary. like uncle or something. what do you think?

ronnie,
she lived in memphis with her son, johnny on exchange st. in downtown, memphis for awhile, not
sure where they moved from there. Proably back to the country. this is just a hunch but i think they may have moved to halls tenn. I'll try to get in touch with my cousin, sue and see if she can remember where they may have lived in tenn. Flaggin and Flanigan are possible spellings they may have used for flanagan. They may have moved to memphis in the late fortys or fifties. They lived in Marshall, tate, desoto counties in mississippi , that i know of.

Hello Ronnie

My grandma, Mattie Viola was your ggrandma ' sister.
Mary Elizabeth Shamblee maiden name was Flanigan. They lived in Tate and Marshall county in Mississppi. Mary 's nickname was Molly. She was
married to a Bowen. They had a son John Bowen
called him Johnny of course. He is buried in the
Helen Crigger Cemtery in Munford. His friend made
his tombstone . It is hand written in cement. the weather has wore it . She then married Wiley Shamblee . their children , Robert Lee, Lily, Fannie(her
first husband was an indian , so that how the indian blood came about), Mattie , Lizzie. Great grandma Molly
also raised her brother's daughter, Mary Vines, who lived in Giltedge TN. She and Mr. Vines attended the
Mount Simeton Assembly of God Church out there.
She also raised Ida Woods Britt. They lived around
Love,Senatobia MS. I think molly is buried in Helen
crigger cemtery . I would like to know any information
you may have about the family. Carolyn P

I'm trying to find out Mary Elizabeth Shamblee's parents names.

My GGGrand Mother was Mary Elizabeth Shamblee.
My GGrand Mother was Francis Elizabeth Shamblee Riales

I got Francis Elizabeth Shamblee Riales death certificate and it shows that her parents were Wiley Shamblee and Mary Shamblee.

I finally found Mary Elizabeth Shamblee's death certificate and it shows that the provider of the information was my Great Grandmother Francis Elizabeth Shamblee Riales. The places for Mary's parents are name state Unknown.

The death certificate shows that Mary's birth date was 8-1-1865 and her place of birth was Panola County Mississippi. I've looked in the 1880 and 1870 census records for Mississippi and have not found a trace. I have found her in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 census records, but by this time she was married and her last name was Shamblee (of course lots of different spellings in the census records) Chambley, Shambley, Shamblee.

Any suggestions on how to determine her parents names would be appreciated.

Actually my great Uncle was named Henry Melvin Chamlee but he changed the spelling to Shamlee saying he could not write a good capital "C". He was born in Hugo Oklahoma on September 16,1901 and died in Ada Oklahoma in Ada on April 1, 1965. I was windering if there are any of his family still alive. I know he married twice and the first was named Bessie and they had a daughter named Lois Shamlee who married a Robertson I believe. Then Henry married a Lois.
If you are related to Henry Shamlee/Chamlee please contact me. I am descended from his oldest sister Bertha Chamlee.

Genealogy tip on finding your Shamblees, et al.

Nikki,

If you write for the birth, marriage, death certificates of Fannie Shamblee Abbott Scott you should be able to get back another generation or so.

There are two main branches of the Chamblee or Shamblee family who settled in MS whose progenitors live there still. "Shamblee" is just a variation of the earlier spellings Chamlee and Chamblee.

Best thing to do is to do your genealogy back one step at a time sending for certificates and any records as you go. Before that, collect all the home sources you can from your oldest relatives who kept and knew everything. Interview, ask, ask and then later, ask again.
