I am trying to find information on my great grandfather and his parents. Robert Shanks senior married a
Bettie. Robert junior is Robert Lewis Shanks born in aprox 1886 I believe in Virginia. married Rebecca Jane Lockett and fathered Ruby Shanks Parsley. Would love any infor on either Robert. Robert Lewis' last know residence was in Botetourt County Virginia.

We have now found out we had family members born in Poole St, James, Dorset, England, Charles Pope Shanks was born on the 27th July 1719 to a Peter and Martha Shanks, and also a Peter born on 21st Sept 1712, and another Peter on the 6th October 1689, but his parents were a Peter and Elizabeth, but living at the same place, any small information may be able to get us going again,

Help, I looking for information regarding a Jasper Shanks. He was born in Alabama. His mother was black and his father was white. He lived in Pensacola, Florida. I found he was a councilman there in the mid 1800's. He married a Elizabeth Barrious( cherokee) they had 13 children. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I need further information on this family - I have a lot of gaps. Any help would be appreciated. This is what I have so far:

Jacob Shanks, (b. about 1790, d. about 1849 in Sullivan Co., IN, I think) married (about 1831) Mary Alumbaugh (b. about 1811, d. 04 Dec 1849, Sullivan Co., IN)

**Jacob is in 1840 census in Sullivan Co., Indiana. Mary died in childbirth with William and Lucy. From what I can tell, the children were scattered among friends and family as orphans. So the children listed below are a compilation of Shanks children found in and around Sullivan County in the 1850 census living with various others.

William Pender Shanks in Ontario and Manitoba 1851-1911

Looking for info on William Pender Shanks (my paternal grandmother's father)who emigrated from Scotland around 1851 (born 1838 or 1839)and ended up a widower, living with a son James R Shanks (B 1867 Ont.) and his family in Brandon MB per the 1911 census.

I imagine Wm Pender Shanks died in Brandon, as I can't locate any death info out of Ontario. Does anyone on this list have info on when / where he died, and other descendants?

Hopefully someone on this list can fill me in and I can
contribute some pieces of information they might need.

When I see an identified photo for sale on an online auction site, I always post it on the appropriate surname board for any relatives to see. This one was recently spotted. I'm not the seller and I'm not researching the family but thought any relatives might be interested.

William A. Shanks, photo taken 1890, St. Louis, Missouri.

William A. Shanks appears in the 1900 federal census of Washington, Clay County, Missouri as the 39 year old head of household for a very large family. He was enumerated with his wife, Jane S. (Susan) Shanks, age 40 and their 10 children. The sons included John, age 17; Rolla, age 13; Harrison (Harry), age 10; Earl, age 6; Roy, age 5; and W. Paul Shanks, age 1. The couple's daughters included Anna, age 16; Bitha?, age 15; Eva, age 13; and Goldy, age 7 months. William Shanks worked as a farmer.

By 1910 he is living in Kearney, Clay County, Missouri.

I am looking for any information on my G-G-Grandfather, David Shanks born about 1826 in Scotland and any ancestors. His birthplace is supposed to be near Gordon Castle,or Glasgow, although some elder family members claim he was born in Morayshire (Moray council has no such record of him). He was reported to have trained as a barrister, married Lady Catherine Grendley of the Glasgow area (no confirmation on her birthplace)on June 25, 1849. Emigrated to Canada in 1856, lived in the town of York, (later called Toronto)for three years. 1859 moved to Euphemia Township in Lambton County Ontario. Six children, Catherine, Susan, Margaret, Will ? Jessie, John.
He died Aug 8, 1906 in Tilbury West Township Essex County Ontario. Any information would be appreciated.

They took a ship from Glasgow to Canada then resided in Buffalo, NY had 3 boys Robert, John (born 1933), William (born 1934). Robert did serve in WW1 for Scotland. Grandfather worked as a baker in the Shanks Bakery (family bakery) in Kirkintilloch(?) it no longer exists. The will names his only lawful son, John Shanks, and his eldest daughter, Christian Shanks, 2nd daughter Jean Shanks and youngest daughter Elisabeth Shanks, and refers to his son John being presently in the years of his minority.

Graveside service will be at Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Paul Ostrem of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.

The Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Alice was born on December 30, 1909, in Canton, Missouri, the daughter of Frank and Stella Ward Wurth. She married Leonard Shanks on June 17, 1927, in Muscatine.

She is survived by her son, Frank Shanks of Weslaco, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, one sister and three grandchildren.
No relation Alice was our neighbor.

I believe that she was born in New York, New York about 1917. She was married to James "Leslie" Knowles from about 1934 to 1940. They lived in Floral Park, New York. She gave birth to a daughter, a set of twin boys and another boy. Her parents may have been John Shanks, born in England in 1894 and Kathleen, born in Canada in 1900. I am seeking information on Adam Shanks who I believe was born 18 Sep 1795

The information I have is

He married his first wife Susannah Sharfey 4 Nov 1816 in Washington Co., TN
Susannah was supposed to have died March 18th 1851. Where is she buried?

They had 7 children who moved to Ray Co. prior to 1843, I only know one, Noah Shanks
Who were there other children?

He married second to Margaret Lewis a widow (no dates or information)

He married his third wife Catherine (Thomas) Adams 16 Mar 1854 in Ray County, MO.

1870 census he was in Knoxville, Ray Co. Missouri with his wife Catherine, I believe living either with or next door to Catherine's son by a previous marriage, George Adams and his family.

That is all I have, I am very interested in where he and his three wives are buried as well as any other pertinent information regarding Adams life in Ray County.

I have no information regarding his parents or the parents of any of his three wives.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have these two marriages and their sources that I thought should be posted plus I have a question that follows:

Samuella (Savilla) Ann Shanks married Clement E. Buckman 22Apr1843 in Union Co., KY. Marriage Register BB,
#227, Union Co., KY. (I have her name from a Civil War pension petition as Servilla)

John N. Buckman married Caroline Shanks 4Feb1833 in Union Co., KY (Marriage Register AA page 510)

I have both Shanks as daughters of Thomas Shanks. I have Servilla marrying the son, Clement E (Evermon) Buckman and Caroline as marrying his widowed father, John N. Buckman.

Now here lies the question: A Buckman genealogy has:
"From Rootsweb Union Co. Query board on 28 Jan 2002:
"Clement I. Buckman, according to the Buckman genealogy book that I have, was the son of Charles Buckman and Jane "Jennie" Dunbar. Clement I. married Caroline Shanks Buckman Snow on Jan. 8, 1856. It was her third marriage.

Question:
So was Caroline Shanks married to two Buckmans and a Snow? That would make 3 marriages. John N. Buckman and Clement I. Buckman were 1st cousins so from the same generation. Could Caroline Shanks be Sevilla's aunt and not her sister? These are the birth dates of those involved:

Caroline Shanks b. 1812 d. 1870
Clement I. Buckman born 1797 (no death date)
John N. Buckman born 1796 - d. 1845

Sevilla Shanks b. 1828 d. 1901

His parents were Thomas R. Shanks and Miriam or Mary (Hunter) Shanks

His father Thomas died befor 1900

In the 1910 and 1920 Census William and his mother were living together, William never married

In 1930 William was living alone.

Can anybody tell me when Thomas and Marium Shanks died and where the three of them are burried?

I assume all three died in Walla Walla County.

KAUFMAN — J. E. “Jimmy” Shanks, 89, of Kaufman, a longtime resident of Farmersville, died Friday in Kaufman. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Farmersville Church of Christ with Brother Mac LeFan officiating. Burial will be in the Farmersville I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Born in Farmersville, he was the son of James N. and Etta Meek Shanks. He married Doris Logan Shanks on March 31, 1942 in Farmersville.
He was a dairy farmer, a veteran of the United States Army and was Elder with the Church of Christ for more than 28 years.
He is survived by his wife, Doris Shanks, of Kaufman; a daughter, Sandra Taylor of Seven Points; four grandchildren, Ashley Wright, Allison Mosley, Amy Wariner and Shannon Diegel; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph Anthamatten, Jerod Anthamatten and Christopher Diegel.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Wright; three brothers, two sisters and his parents.
Visitation is scheduled from 5 until 7 p.m. today at Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.

There was property transfered from Thomas Shanks to Christy Ann Shanks on Aug 29 1899.

1 Lot - Port Hill, Bonner County Idaho that was recorded in Kootenai County Idaho (Book S pg 245) . . .

Then Thomas Shanks is dead prior to the probate of his fathers estate in March of 1900. And so his portion of his fathers inheritance went to two sons of Thomas - William C. Shanks and Noah Shanks.

Can anybody tell me if Thomas Died in Bonner Co around 1899 and the transfer of land was to his wife or heir ?

I have his wife having been Marianna M. Hunter and cannot find a death date or location for either of them.

I am seeking any information on Shanks in Bonner Co., or Family of Thomas Shanks in ID, WA and Oregon most likely.

I have run across 4 books belonging to Audrey and Robert Shanks. I think these two are sister and brother, Children of Robert R. and (I think) India Shanks. Two of the books have writing in them regarding Audrey, one was given to her by her Aunt Emma. One is for Robert. Audrey has her address in one, this is how I know that this is the correct Audrey. Audrey is living in Baltimore Co. on Aldershot Rd in 1930 Census. I am not connected to the Shanks family at all but have family in CT and found these in a garage sale. Joseph Shanks (born 1789 in VA) married Nancy Grooms on 12 Sept 1815 in Adams Co OH. Nancy born about 1795 in VA.

Sarah/Sally Shanks married Abraham Grooms on 12 Aug 1815 in Adams Co OH. Abraham born about 1790, died about 1835.

Mary/Polly Shanks (born 1808 in VA) married Edward Zachariah Grooms on 27 May 1827 in Pike Co OH. Edward born about 1800 in VA and died after 1870.

Thomas E. Shanks (1861-1926) married Eliza Jane Grooms on 3 Dec 1891 in Adams Co OH. Eliza 1857-1928.

Zachariah, Nancy & Abraham were siblings; their parents were Abraham/Adam Grooms and Margaret/Peggy Satterfield.

Edward was son of Zachariah and second wife whose surname was [supposedly] Beck.

Eliza Jane was great-granddaughter of Abraham/Adam Grooms and Margaret/Peggy Satterfield.

Hi, im looking for the shank/s family in the Gladstone area of North Kansas City, missouri. One being Stephen James Shank and his brother Doug Shank both born in the 1950s? I think their mothers name was Tracy Shank, and their father was in the 2nd world war. They lived on "North Woodland St." in North Kansas City as of the 1960s and 1970s. Does anyone know these people? Any information would be great!

Seeking information on Nancy HUTCHISON, born about 1834 in Pennsylvania, married Penalton P. SHANKS on September 23, 1851 in Vinton County, Ohio. I believe I have found Nancy and Penalton listed on page 345D of the 1880 Pike County, Illinois census:

I have not been able to find Nancy or Penalton in earlier census readings. Does anyone have any further information on this family?

I'm looking for a needle in a haystack - my great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Shanks.

Elizabeth J. Shanks; b: August 06, 1824; d: July 12, 1900 in Greene Co, Tennessee; Burial: Cross Anchor Cemetery, Greene County, Tennessee

Elizabeth married Jesse Davis who was b: Abt. 1820 in Greene County, Tennessee; d: Bef. 1900 in Greene Co, Tennessee ; Father: Jesse Davis Mother: Sarah Antrim m: April 15, 1841 in Greene County, Tennessee

The Davises lived in the Baileyton, Greene County, Tennessee area, but since there are so many Shanks from Hawkins County, and Baileyton is so close to the county line, it's possible that Elizabeth is from Hawkins County, TN, or any other adjacent county in East Tennessee. She was married prior to the 1850 census of Greene County.

So far, Elizabeth doesn't seem to fit into any Shanks family I've found in Greene County at the time of her marriage, although possibilities may be a Rosanna Shanks household or a Patsy (male?) Shanks household, both appearing on the Greene County Census of 1840. I can't find them in the 1850 Census. Another possibility is the Moses and Mary Shanks household (with daughter Mahala, 23, living at home in 1850). I've elimininated the other Shanks households in the Greene Co 1840 Census.

These may be possibilities. I found these Shanks marriages in a book of Washington Co Tennessee marriages:

William Shanks married Elizabeth Roberson, Feb 19, 1791.
Adam Shanks married Susannah Sharfey, Nov. 4, 1816
Jacob Shanks married Mary Isenburg, July 22, 1817 (Bondsman, Abraham Tipton)
David R. Shanks married Rebekah Hair, May 1, 1821

I don't know one more thing about Elizabeth. If anyone has identified an Elizabeth who would have been born 1824, please let me know.

Surviving are his wife, Merle; one son, Louis, and one grand daughter, Marsha Shank, all of Grand Rapids; three brothers, Charles, W. J. , and Russell, and one sister, Mable.
