Yes, that must be the same Robert. My grandmother's father was David Dixon Shanks married to Margaret Emily Scott. In my first post I made an error it was supposed to say my grandmother's "grandfather" was Robert Shanks. Thanks for the info.

Thanks, I already have all that and was hoping that maybe you knew a town name in Ireland. I do know that the five children that I know that William and Sarah had were born in Ireland. I also know that most people have Samuel born about 1810 when he was born closer to 1795. Getting any information in Ireland is like pulling teeth from the perverbial chicken! I have been there three times and got nothing. I guess its time for another try! LOL Good excuse for a holiday I guess.
Thanks for your time.
Re: shank family web site

Margaret Ruth Shank ...

Request an invitation to the Shank website.
I have traced my Father, Grandfather (Thomas Arthur - 1889 in Iowa), GGrandfather(Albert Oliver - 1856 in Ohio), GGGrandfather (George Washington Shank - 1819 in Ohio), GGGGrandfather (John Samuel Shank - 1793? or 1790? either Maryland or Pennsylvannia) ... all the family discussions mentioned that the family had come through the Ulster Plantation in Northern Ireland and likely arrived before the Revolutionary War (1775) ... That Canadian Company (Swyrich Corp.) states that between 1650 and 1700 many of the Border Clans (lowland Scotland) settled in Northern Ireland. "During the Plantation of Northern Ireland 21 heads of Shanks families were settled in Ulster, 10 in Antrim and 7 in county Down." ... and obviously 4 families somewhere else. This is where I've hit the wall. John Samuel Shank's first and oldest son was "George Washington Shank", thus most likely, his father was a George something Shank ... I've found several George Shank's in Maryland with "multiple" male children in the 1780's and 1790's but the info is really sketchy and inconclusive .... Pennsylvannia, of course has numerous "George Shanks" ... mostly German or from counties heavily populated with palatine Germans, not the frontiersman Scots-Irish, like Bedford, or Washington, etc... I've also checked ship passenger lists from the early and mid 1700's to try and find a connection, but the popular ports of entry from Northern Ireland (Delaware River) haven't shown anything yet ... hope you/the Shank website can help!!

Thanks,
Clay Shank
clayshank@yahoo.com
West Linn, Oregon

I was just browsing the web and saw your question. I have the following:

Reverend John Milton Shanks Jr. @AABAD was born in Kentucky on 20 April 1837/4 in Lincoln County, Kentucky and died in Monticello, Missouri on 20 August 1905. He was married 29/24 December 1864 to Susan (Sue) LaRue Bayne. She was born in Lewis City, Missouri on 12 September 1841 and died on 05 May 1918/9. Both share a headstone at Benjamin Cemetery, Benjamin, Missouri. She was the daughter of John Bayne, a native of Kentucky.

Is this the family you were looking for?

Dennis Shanks

Hi Robert,
My name is Tammy (Shanks) Bevis. My father is Richard Dale Shanks and Charlies Shanks was my grandfather. I am just getting started and can't find where Mary Jane Shanks went after Tillman died. Dad said he thought Louisa Tirey died in middletown or dayton from alztheimers disease. I can't confirm this, only that she is listed in a lee county cemetary. I sure would like any information that you have. I have always wondered what happened to Uncle Earl's family. Dad has told us the story of how Grandpa Charlie was afraid to fly and when Uncle Earl got sick, he insisted on driving and didn't make it before Uncle Earl passed away. That always made me sad. I know what Jack, Ray, Charlie jr. all look like, but wondered who Earl looked like. I also have never seen a picture of Agnes. Would love to talk with you.

Your other half of the family,

Tammy Bevis
Fax #513-242-0915
Phone: 812-594-9658
