Surnames: Crocket Sharp
An obit on the Crockett-L@rootsweb mailing list brought to light a connection with a Sharp family, and I want to share it with your readers.

A very prominent clergyman and historian named George Louis Crocket (1861-1936) spent most of his life in San Augustine, TX, having been born in Tennessee and spending a brief time in Christian Co, KY.

The Episcopal Church of San Augustine TX has a page for GLC. This family apparently spelled the surname with one "t".

"The twinkling eyed Irishman was born in a two room house in San Augustine, June 3, 1861, the youngest of five children of George Fulton Crocket and Elmira Louisa Sharp Crocket; he died January 3, 1936, in Memorial Hospital, Nacogdoches, Texas of a heart ailment."

French and Armstrong's Notable Southern Families Vol V, Crockett Family, lists under "Other Crocketts", "Another George Crockett", beginning page 475. They begin with George and Catherine Crockett of Ireland and their thirteen children, among them George (24 Aug 1772) who married Mary Fulton. The latter George was born in Dublin, a Presbyterian, and escaped. "One of his brothers was governor of the Territory of Arkansas before the state was admitted to the Union." George taught math at William and Mary. Later married Mary Fulton and moved to Gallatin

TN. Named a son George Fulton Crocket (who was the father of the clergyman George Louis Crocket). George and Mary (Fulton) Crockett also had sons William Henry Crockett b 1833 TN) and David. According to the Crockett book, there was a daughter Mary Crockett who married a Sharp of Little Rock AR. (Note, I find Mary but never in AR.)

The 1850 Christian Co KY, District 2, census has
George F Crockett, age 34, Teacher, b TN
Elmira L, age 25, b TN
Kate, age 6, b TN
Elizabeth C, age 4, b TN,
William Ida, age 2 (female), b TN
Baginal D, age 4/12, b KY

Their neighbors were also from Tennessee and surnamed Sharp which was George Louis Crocket's mother's maiden name.
Marcus L F Sharp, 62 [b ca 1788] was a physician born SC.
Elizabeth L Sharp, 52, born TN.
Marcus A, 16, TN
Alfred, 14, TN
Valerius P, 12, TN

Ancestry posting has them as 1 Elizabeth L. HIBBETT or HIBBITTS b: Abt 1798

Census entries thru 1930 are found.

The earler records from Sumner Co, TN, include the following:

1817 tax: Sharp, M. D. L. F. -- 57 acres on Goose Creek

M D L F Sharp was enumerated in 1820 in Gallatin, Sumner Co, TN (page 347, line 5) 200010--10100

M D L F Sharp was enumerated in 1840 in Sumner Co, TN (page 358, line27) 212110011--0001001

Tromping through the usual Internet sites I have found assertions that. Marcus De LaFayette Sharp was born 23 Jan 1789, one of nine children of James (May 1754) and Rachel (Cannon) Sharp of Mecklenburg (originally Anson) Co, NC. James and Rachel's probates in Rutherford Co, TN.

Marcus married first Phoebe Featherston, second by early 1830s Elizabeth L Hibbett or Hibbits.

I have seen a number of individuals named for the Marquis de Lafayette. Marquis often became Marcus and what happened to "de Lafayette" varied.

An Ancestry posting (Contact: Patrick Thomson) adds interest. Marcus and Phebe's son Benjamin Franklin Sharp (1818-1882) married for second wife Mary Jane Crockett (1827-1924). This source asserts that: "George L. CROCKET was born 24 AUG 1772 in County Derry, England, and died JUN 1847 in Tennessee. He married Mary Ann FULTON

APR 1815 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was born 4 JAN 1797, and died 1874 in Canton, Mississippi." [Except that County Derry is Ireland.]

Daughter "Mary Jane CROCKET (George L. CROCKET1) was born 1 JUN 1827 in Gallatin, Tennessee, and died 16 JUL 1894 in Brownwood, Brown County, Texas. She married Benjamin Franklin SHARP 4 JUL 1854 in San Augustine, Texas, son of Marcus De LaFayette SHARP and Phebe FEATHERSTON. He was born 31 OCT 1818 in Gallatin, Tennessee, and died 31 DEC 1882 in San Augustine, Texas."

Other researchers, including David Sharp who has posted "Sharp Family" to Ancestry, have contributed bits and pieces.
