I am interested in the English Sharpes and offer this as information from you though we don't appear to have an obvious connection. My Goodison family is well recorded.
Lockyer Sharpe son of Henry Burgoyne Sharpe married Ann Goodison on 16 June 1790 in Kensington Parish, London (UK) Both of them were under age and had parents' consent and married by special licence.
More than that I do not know of the Sharpe family. The name Burgoyne may be significant in view of the American War of Independence and Gentleman Johnny who was born in Sutton Bedfordshire (UK) 1722 I don't know where my Sharpes came from.
And in view of so many Sharpe names in USA ?
Love to hear from you.
Patricia Frykberg
New Zealand
I'm looking my grandfather Alfred Henry Sharpe that was born in Louisiana, maybe Alexandria. I have no other information on him. I'm not even sure if he is still living. I was told that his father was Elvie Sharpe and his mother was Rowena but the only ones I could find in Louisiana were born in 1921 and 1929 respectively, which would have been about the time his was born. Possibly Elvie is his brother or of some other relation. Any assistance would be great!

Sharpe/Hamlet connection

I am looking for a possible connection between the Sharpe and Hamlet families of Bath Somerset. In the 1851 census a Charlotte Sharpe is living with a Jane Hamlet (nee Fox). The information was sent to me by someone else and they forgot to tell me what the relationship between Jane and Charlotte was. This Charlotte Sharpe is the informant on Jane's death certificate in 1859. Several following generations of Hamlet's have used the name Sharpe as the middle name for many of their children. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jen

They also had a son, Charles Calverley, who died aged 5 on 5th July 1886 and a son, George Raymond who died aged 1 yr 11 months on 11th December, 1891. As far as I know Bernard and Ada emmigrated to South Africa which is where their son met my great-grandmother Wilhelmina. Ada died 14th October, 1929. I have access to a few photographs and Ada's birth certificate. What is your connection to this side of the family?

Helen Jane (Nell as most people called her) Sharpe was my mum, she died in 2001. She had six sisters(Emily, Lillian, Alice, Joan, Grace and Edith(Eadie) and one brother (Charles). They originally came from around the Islington,Hornsey or Edmonton areas. Unfortunately not many records were kept so tracking any members of the family is proving difficult. The only sure thing I know was Emily Celina E Sharpe married H R (Dick) Adams in 1922. Charlie died in 2004 he was married to Jessie ?, they emigrated to New Zealnd in the early 60's and returned in the early 70's

He was my great, great grandfather. If you still believe that this is the same family, I would love to hear from you again. Thanks for the contact.

The Seven Linsfield Sharpe's That I Know (and One I Don't)

The Seven Linsfield Sharpe's That I Know and One I Don't

Last summer, while working on my Weeks family I found the family name of Sharpe appearing in several generations. I figured there was a good possibility that it was a maternal line somewhere in Virginia. Then I discovered the family name of Linsfield, as in Linsfield Berryhill. I put Linsfield and Sharpe into a Google search and the results led me to a long list of Linsfield Sharpe's. It turned out that my ancestor was a Sharpe, but was Thomas the eldest son of Linsfield and Ann Nugent.

I spent a lot of time in my research sorting out all these Linsfield's and now that I see there is much interest in this name, I thought I would share this information with everyone. I have another motive for sharing information. I am compiling information for a friend who may one day soon write a Sharpe family book. I have accumulated a lot of data and information which I am willing to share with others who make a meaningful contribution to this project. Believe me when I say that if it is on the internet I have found it so unless you have something to add which isn't just wild speculation, it won't help much to send it. If, however you can give me your connection to the family or have facts not tossed around elsewhere, I will be happy to answer your emails and give you what information, facts, or conclusions that I have reached. So this is my contribution to the many folks out there who are looking for their Linsfield Sharpe and who may add to the dialogue.

My name is Jim Maddox and my email address is JimHMaddox@msn.com. I live in Colorado Springs, Colorado. OK - here goes:

The Scotsman is known for his thrift. When he found a good name he kept it and passed it on through his family. Scottish naming patterns are notoriously famous for keeping with form. I have researched many such families and found that the key to following them through name is to understand these patterns. With the children of Mary Linsfield you will find an abundance of Linsfield's, John's, Thomas's, Benjamin's, and William's. You can generally count on this throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. All three of Mary Linsfield children had a Linsfield and some of the others. She had three children - John, Linsfield, and Mary.

Little is know about Mary the daughter of Mary Linsfield. What can be found has her married to Elias Sharpe of King George. However, one look at her children and grandchildren will give you reason to toss that assumption. Elias Sharpe, like Linsfield Sharpe survived in each family and helped to keep them sorted out. In King George County records by Ruth and Sam Sparacio (Antient Press) we can find the information to begin to sort these two families. The family of Elias moves on to Spotsylvania and then some on to Fayette and Pendleton counties in Kentucky. The family of Elias uses some of our Linsfield names so they are easily confused. Mary Sharpe Park's family moves into North Carolina and on to Georgia and on to westward states..

It would not be fair to anyone reading this to stop and point out that the Sharpe husband of Mary Linsfield is not known. Although there are many guesses as to he is, no one has yet found out for a fact that it was John. Also there are attempts to connect Mary to yet another marriage to a Walker. This is most improbable and has no basis in fact. I have seen others try to connect Richard and/or Robert to her (even attributing John, Linsfield, and Mary to her as grandchildren.). I have eliminated anything other than Mary Linsfield married to an unknown Sharpe and second to Thomas Knight. Maybe someone will post the information here to show their evidence but I doubt it.

There are two points that I would like to make before proceeding to my Linsfield listings: One, I am attempting to list them by age but it is only a guess. Secondly and most important is that there is room for error and I don't claim to be a know all/end all but merely apply my own rule of genealogy. Genealogy is the about half part fact and another half interpreting those facts and a small amount of educated guess work (when stated as that). Facts cannot stand alone without some relevance attached and appropriate interpretation. Small amounts of educated guess work is essential in almost any genealogy that I have reviewed. So without further ado - here goes!!!

1. Linsfield Sr (sometimes referred to as Linsfield the Elder) lived and died on his plantation in King George County in 1759. It appears that all the information available on the internet regarding him and Ann Nugent is accurate so there's no need to repeat it. I would however recommend that everyone look at the plat map at this link very closely as it will play a part in understanding this Linsfield and several to follow. http://books.google.com/books?id=aO28FcB2AGcC&pg=PA23&am... Blow it up so that you can read all the names.

2. Linsfield Jr. Linsfield Jr lived and died on his plantation in King George/Stafford counties. He can be found as early as 1755/56 on the King George tax rolls (Sparacio). He can be found on the tax rolls in Vol 2 of "Stafford County Virginia Totals 1723-1790 (Iberian Publishing Company). Also Stafford County Virginia Personal Property Tax lists 1783-1813 from Binns Genealogy. Finally we have this from the Sparacio series of books:

"p. 120 THIS INDENTURE made and entered into this Twenty fourth day of August one thousand eight hundred and ten between WILLIAM SHARPE of the county of Stafford and State pf Virginia of one part and JOHN CONYERS of said County and State of other part; Whereas in a suit lately depending in the Superior Court of Chancery for the RICHMOND DISTRICT between JOHN CONYERS Plaintiff and the aforesaid WILLIAM SHARP, Son and Representative of LINSFIELD SHARPE, the Younger deceas'd who was Executor of LINSFIELD SHARPE the Elder deceas'd and other Defendants it was on the twenty six day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nine among other things ordered and declared that the said Defendant WILLIAM SHARPE, convey to the said JOHN CONYERS at his costs, in fee simple with warranty against himself and all persons claiming under him, the tract of land in the proceedings mentioned being in the County of Stafford whereof LINSFIELD SHARPE, the Elder died seized and possessed and resign to the said JOHN CONVERS the possession as will more fully at large appear by reference to the records of the said Court; Now This Indenture Witnesseth that in consideration of the said Decree and for One dollar paid by said JOHN CONYERS, said WILLIAM SHARPE hath granted unto said JOHN CONYERS his heirs and assigns forever all the aforesaid parcel of land in County of Stafford and bounded, Beginning at said SHARPE's Corner on the River being also corner to MASSEY, running thence No. E. to an old Box Oak, corner to STEPHENS, thence with STEPHENS line S.E. to a Branch by its several meanders to HORE's line, thence South W. to a Hickory corner to MASSEY, thence with Massey’s line No. W. to the River by a white Oak, corner to MASSEY, thence up the River by its several meanders to the beginning, containing three hundred and thirty nine acres be the same more or less; To have and to hold the aforesaid tract of land unto said JOHN CONYERS his heirs and assign forever against the claim of himself and his heirs and every person claiming under him; In Testimony whereof the said WILLIAM SHARPE doth hereunto set his hand and affix his seal.
Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of:
WILLIAM PRIMM JUNR. WM. SMITH , JOHN SHELTON, SARAH CONYERS, LUCY JET WILLIAM SHARPE
At a court held for Stafford County on the 8th day of October 1810 The foregoing Indenture of Bargain and Sale was acknowledged in open Court by the said SHARPE to be his act and deed and ordered to be recorded.
Teste V. PEYTON, C.S.S.".

I have never found a wife for Linsfield Jr. However it appears that William was his only son.

3. Captain Linsfield Sharpe of Fauquier County: Although there is much in the way of records available for him, it has been difficult to pin down his linage. His will names his wife Francis and children Edmund, Arthur, Ann and Francis. He appeared to first marry Ann Oliver around 1770. There is another connection from the Sharpe family to the Oliver family. We find this from the Rev War Pension Application.

"John Oliver born 20 Jan 1761 in Caroline County, VA son of John Oliver and Ann Sharp. His widow Elizabeth (True) Oliver applied from Fayette Co, KY where her husband had died 4 Oct 1825".

We find other Oliver marriages in King George County during the 1740's and 1750's. An additional clue comes from his son Edmund which is a name found in the family of Ann Oliver. Also Caroline County and King George counties adjoined each other

We find that Capt Linsfield Sharpe married second Francis Latham in Culpeper county in 1780's. The Latham family lived in the Little Fork community in Culpeper and Linsfield lived within walking distance across the Hedgeman river. Finally, in 1810 we find Francis Sharpe listed with son Arthur and two daughters. One daughter is 10-15 and the other 16-25. Edmund is listed separately. I plan to do more work on this family.

4.. Linsfield Sharpe Sr: This is the Linsfield Sharpe Sr. listed on the 1800 census of Pendleton County, Kentucky, along with a Linsfield Sharpe Jr. He appears to be the Linsfield who married Elizabeth Marshall of neighboring Harrison County. A common mistake with novice family researchers is to assume that Sr. is always the parent of Jr. There are many ways to distinguish between two men with the same name in the same county. One is by trade, another by location, and yet another by listing as the son of. There are other ways but the Sr. and Jr. designations is often used in the southern states.
This Linsfield is one of three who called Fauquier County home at one time. The link to the Pendleton/Fayette Linsfield's is from his father John Sharpe. In the book
"The Tax Man Cometh" (Willow Bend Books) we find John Sharpe listed in the 1768 district of Armistead Churchill. This line of entry list JOHN COLVIN, COSSOM DAY next to John Sharpe.
Anyone who has spent time researching the Kentucky counties of Pendleton, Fayette, and Harrison Counties will find many references to these three people. But the ties that connect them to Linsfield Sr come from the following entry (provided to me by Paula).
"There is a Pendleton County court record abstract that says that in April of 1805 the widow o f Lincefield Sharp, Elizabeth Sharp, is appointed administrator to his estate.
His will was probated in 1805:
June, 1805. Estate of Lincefield Sharp. Elizabeth Sharp, widow, is appointed administrator. Appraisers _ Jeremiah Glenn, Charles Colvin, Lewis Clark. page 41-estate inventory, January 1 3, 1806) (page 158 - notes that Elizabeth Sharp, widow, is now remarried to Mr.Edward Kemp.[This is taken from Pendleton County KY Court Record Abstracts]" Note that Charles Colvin was one of the appraisers. This is a continuation of the Colvin/Sharpe relationship from Fauquier. Charles is either the son or brother to John Colvin. Also Charles Colvin married the daughter of Cossum Day.
Another tie from the Colvin's of Fauquier/Culpeper counties is the marriages below.
SHARPE, John and Susannah COLVIN, bond date, January 18, 1799, married January ?, 1799.
SHARPE, Linefield/Linchfield and Elizabeth MARSHALL, bond date, February 21, 1799, no marriage date.
I am still researching these families and hope to have more soon. I believe John Sharpe, John Colvin, and Cossom Day went to Kentucky via Culpeper County. I am currently reviewing the tax rolls for Culpeper.
5. Linsfield Sharpe Jr. This is the Linsfield Sharpe on the 1800 census who was designated as Linsfield Sharpe Jr. Also he is the Linsfield who married Rhoda Nichols He is the third of the Linsfield Sharps of Fauquier County. This information sent to me also by Paula:
Marriage Records Fayette County, Kentucky 1803-1809 Volume I Name: Linefield Sharp Spouse: R hoed Nichols Marriage Date: 31 Jan 1805William Dudley, B.; Of age; Wm. Rice, W.
What we know of this Linsfield Sharpe in Fauquier is contained in the book "Fauquier Families" (Iberian Press). This book is highly compressed and contains a lot of information. I would advise any serious researchers of the Infields of Fauquier to buy the book.
Some of the information I am going to provide is not pure fact but contain my best guess. I realize that I may be on thin ice but it's the only ice in town.
"Willis, John, 87A/Linsfield Sharp-under 21, Minute Book - Order Book 8-383, 1787. Minor by next friend, Jane Willis against John Wheatley. 9-230, Keeping tipling house."
The John Willis mentioned above is thought to be the brother of Mary Willis. Mary Willis married Hancock Lee II of King George/Stafford Counties. This John Willis was listed in 1787 tax rolls in the district of John Blackwell.
"Sharp/Sharpe, David, Minute Book - Order Book 6-44, Ann Sharpe admin and inv (Will Book 1.440)"
"Sharp/Sharpe, David, Minute Book - Order Book 8-506, 1788. Will Book 2-112, 1786, pr December 1786 by James Routt,
Augustine Jennings, Joseph Silman. Wife Ann; sons John decd, William, Elijah, George; daus Elizabeth Butler (m. to Benjamin), Ann Butler, Margaret Freeman, Mary Collins decd, Catherine
Williams, grchildren; Richardson and George Williams, both sons of John; Benjamin Butler Jr; George Butler Jr; George Butler, son of John; James, George, and Ann Collins."
To tie all of these facts together we can see that a David Sharpe, husband of Ann, died about 1787 leaving orphan children. The Linsfield who was listed with John Willis was most likely one of those orphans. He is listed as a minor child. His brothers William and Benjamin chose Charles Duncan as their guardian. You will find that Charles Duncan and many of his family appear in the Pendleton/Fayette/Harrison records. I think Linsfield must have been at least eighteen years old and was not given a guardian. With a little math you can give him an approximate age.
A good investigation into this Linsfield will show many Fauquier families who migrated to the three Kentucky counties. Most of these families intermarried and are related. Among these families are the Duncan’s, Wheat leys, Routs, Days, Williams, Colvin’s and many more.
I may not have made a great case for the parents of this Linsfield, however, there is little doubt that he came from Fauquier county. He and most of the others most likely followed Thomas Marshall (father of Chief Justice John Marshall) who led a large party from Fauquier, Culpeper, Spotsylvania, and Stafford to Kentucky around the turn of the century.
5. Linsfield Sharpe of Scott County Kentucky. This is the Linsfield who married Ann Moore. His lineage is well defined. He is the son of Thomas Jr and Judy who in turn was the son of John who was the son of Mary Linsfield. ( I have the documents to show this lineage} This was one of the easiest to find and leaves no doubt. We begin with document with the following information from the Fredericksburg Virginia District Court Records:
"Court Record Data
Context Extract
Defendant Linsfield Sharpe; Thomas Sharpe; John Sharpe; Lewis Sharpe; John Simpson; Frances Simpson; Philip Beazley; Agatha Beazley; William Fant; Nancy Fant
Family Linsfield Sharpe, Thomas Sharpe Jr., John Sharpe & Lewis Sharpe, sons of Thomas Sharpe Sr.
Locality Stafford Co.; Culpeper Co.; Fauquier Co. KY; King George Co.
Marriage William Fant -mr- Nancy Sharpe, daughter of Thomas Sharpe Sr.
Marriage Philip Beaseley -mr- Agatha Sharpe, daughter of Thomas Sharpe Sr.
Marriage William Abbot -mr- Eleanor Sharpe, daughter of Thomas Sharpe Sr.
Marriage John Simpson -mr- Frances Sharpe, daughter of Thomas Sharpe Sr.
Plaintiff Walter Monteath; William Roberson; James Gordon; Neil, Jamieson & Co.
Citation
Record title Monteath & c vs Sharpe's
Year recorded 1804
Collection CR-DC-L
Record ID 566-58
End Notes
Preserved by Virginia Circuit Court Records Preservation Program
Processed by Margaret Anne Crickman
Extracted by Barry L. McGhee
Extracted on 10/21/2002

If you look at the 1810 census of Scott county you will find Linsfield Sharpe listed at the bottom of the page. Just above him is the name. of William P Fant and above him is William Abbott. Also you will find Thomas (the son of Thomas Jr) and John listed in this 1810 census. (By the way, you will find Lewis, another son, living in Culpeper county. He goes on to settle in Missouri and more can be found on him). These families emigrated from Stafford counties.

7. Linsfield Share of Fayette county. This would be the son of Linsfield #5. I have this information from Paula (although she is not sure of this marriage). It could be a second marriage of Linsfield #5 or the son of this Linsfield. Maybe some one will clear this up for us all.
"Sharp, Lincifield Swigert, Margaret 02 Jun 1818 Kentucky, Fayette County"

8. The final Linsfield Sharpe and the one I haven't researched can be found as a printer in Nashville, Tenn in the mid 1820's. He came there from Baltimore, Maryland. If you are missing a Linsfield, and you think he could be your ancestor, please write in and claim him.

Well this is the end of a lot of typing. Remember that I need your input to put together a good genealogy of this family. I had a lot of files and data that I haven't included in this article. I can and will answer questions to those who will contribute information. I hope you will feel free to constructive criticize my work. We will never get the answers without questions. I have been at this genealogy for a long time and have done many families. I have learned that criticism is healthy and it doesn't hurt my feelings. Also, I will try to keep you updated by posting on the Sharp board at Ancestery.com and at Genealogy.com. Good luck with your research.

Jim Maddox

My grandfather was also adopted via the Hostel of Hope and Sunnybank Orphanage. I am drawing a blank as to what each organisation was. Have you had any further luck in finding out what they were?

Simon Bailes.

Hi I am looking for Anthony Sharp m Anna Unknown Dau Elizabeth b Philadelphia 1792 married Amos Bullock 1816 in Moorestown Nj Quaker Meeting. I see that you make the Sharp connection from Pa to Nj which I find interesting. You are the first place I have found an Anthony of the right time period. Elizabeth moved her letter from Maryland MM to Mt Holly MM so this also indicates a MD connection. If this seems connected to your research ....kindly share Thanks

Henry Sharpe, Fairlee, Orange County, Vermont VT, born circa 1828

Hi, I'm looking for anyone who knows anything about any Sharpes in Orange County, Vermont, especially my great grandfather Henry Sharpe. His only brother drowned in a lake near Fairlee. Henry was a Union soldier in the Civil War and moved to Lowell, Massachusetts. To the best of my knowledge, my brother and I and my children are his only living relatives. I'm pretty sure I have no first or second or third cousins on that side, but I'm hoping for some fourth cousins! Also, is there some kind person who is willing to do Census lookups for him in the Vermont 1830 and 1840 and 1850 censuses, and the Massachusetts 1870, 1880, and 1890 censuses? Thanks to anyone who can help.
