Hello Brenda, I'm Jim Shasteen, lived in Washington Court House, son of Frank and Betty Shasteen. Vicki was my sister, she passed away 3 years ago, Francis and Bobby are my brothers. Sam, what part of Ohio is your family from? Do you know who your great grandparent were? William is a common name in the Shasteen lines, and in my indirect line there was a William Harrison Shasteen. Your William Harris would probably have been a younger generation (depending on how old you are). My large Shasteen family was from the Ross county area (although some of them continued on north in Ohio to Darke County area). It would help if you know G-grandparents names. Hope to hear from you.

I am from Ohio but don’t know really know anything about the family. My grandparents were William Harris Shasteen and Elisabeth (Betty). They had three Boys William Harris (JR), Herbert Wayne (Herb), Samuel Ray (Sam). Jr Past away last year do to cancer. Herb and Sam are still alive in Ohio. JR had three kids Jennifer, Brandy, and William (Billy), Herb has to many to kids to list. Then Sam as me Sam Jr and Kristopher. I have been try for some time to find out more about the family. When I ask questions I never get any good answers. I don’t know is the most common.

I do not have much information, but here it is.
My maternal grandfather's name was Thomas Shasteen.
My maternal grandmother's name was Lucinda Robinson.
I believe that they were both born in Arkansas, Greene County-in or near Paragould, Ar.
As the story goes my maternal great-grandfather went to Arkansas from the Dakotas. He was a full Indian; he shot a white man and had to leave the Dakotas. However, I do not know my great-grandfather's name; nor do I know my great-grandmother's maiden name.
My mother's name was Pearl Shasteen . Her older siblings were Will (born 1894) then Lark, Elsie , Jase, Vera, Orvil,
Virgie, and younger siblings, T.A. (believed to stand for Thomas Albert), and Kenneth. My mother married Chester Smith of Paragould,Ar.
If you have any more information on the Shasteen family, I would love to know it.

James, Hi. I am working on the same Shasteen line as you. Have met and keep in (occasional) contact with Martha Rittinger of Ross County. I wonder if we've been in touch before? Although I don't think so . . . I am descended from Frances Marion Shasteen's sister, Mary Alice Shasteen (married my g-grandfather, Shepherd Keller). Martha Rittinger is descended from sister Martha Shasteen (married a Slager). Am wondering what info you have, and where you have gotten it. We're well aware of the possible "French connection," but myself, Martha and Ray Shasteen of Houston, all grew up hearing that this family was Irish. The Chastain Family Association's genealogist, Gerre Buland has been working to connect our Ross Co. Shasteens to the Chastains for years, but has found no connection. It does seem likely however since they were found in close proximity at the same time in Virginia. Would love to hear from you . . . glad to hear of your faith too - one that I share as well. I am expecting my third child in early January - her name will be Shasteen! Karen

Jim, Glad to get your message. I had forgotten about the message that I had posted. I remember the reunions with great joy. Roscoe was my grandfather-Maynard and Martha are my parents. I have 2 sisters-Sheila and Carol. I also had a brother-Mark-he had cerebral palsy and passed away when he was almost 25. I remember Uncle Everett and Uncle Earl,but I was pretty young. Daddy and Mother now live in Lewisport, KY about 8 miles from me. Sheila and Barry (McClaskie) live in Hawesville, KY also about 8 miles away. Do you remember Uncle Verl (Daddy's brother)? He now lives in Georgia with his son Scott. My sister Carol lives in Hoopeston, IL. My husband and I have three children-Lisa, Lora, and Brad. Lisa lives in Lewisport with husband Rob, and has 2 children-Jaide and Philip. Lora lives in Ringgold, GA with husband Daniel and also has 2 children-Clay and Caitlin. Brad is single (but has a girlfriend) and lives across the road from us. We live on a small farm-about 250 acres. Don't know much more to tell. Thanks for the message. Brenda

Brenda, I'm trying to remember what you looked like but-you see-Roscoe was my great uncle--Everett was my grandfather-I am the son of Frank and Betty Shasteen--have two brothers and a sister-Francis, Robert, and Vicki. I KNOW--we have met at one of the old Shasteen reunions that used to be held at the Washington C. H. City park from time to time. Wish things were still as nice and pleasant as they used to be. I am also a desendent of the Shasteens of Yellowbud. My great grandmother was Marietta "Mary"Shasteen she married Charles Bennett. Marys parents were Robert Shasteen and Nancy Murphy. I live in Yellowbud and know that there are many Shasteens buried in Springbank cemetery. Chester B. SHASTEEN, b. 7 Nov 1866, Mo., married Virginia KYLE, who was born 3 Oct 1868, Arkansas (died 18 Oct 1939, buried in Bee Cemetery, Johnston County, Okla.), Chester died 18 Jan 1942 and buried in Bee Cemetery, Johnston County, Okla. They had the following children:

5. Mattie Ann Shasteen, b. 26 May 1908, married Ben Stallings, died 7 April 1986 and buried in Bee Cemetery, Johnston County, Okla.

This is for the gentleman who had a long genealogy list for Shasteens out of Yellow Bud, Ohio. I logged on a week or two ago and was thrilled to see all this info because my great-grandmother was Amy Mae Shasteen, who was born in Yellow Bud, Ohio. Her father was Robert Shasteen, although NOT the Robert that you had listed. I believe my Robert was that Robert's son. I have alot of information on that branch of the tree, if you are interested. I also know the cemetery where most of the family are buried in Ohio and can be of help there.

Mrs. R.O. (Dorris) Shasteen passed away Tuesday, April 28, 1998, at the age of 86. Mrs. Shasteen's request was no funeral services. Cremains will be sent to Syracuse, KS, where her husband, Ralph and parents are buried. She was a member of the Methodist Church; San Marcial #34 O.E.S.; White Shrine; N.A.R.V.E Railroad Club; zoo parent of Rio Grande Zoo; and played organ at Protestant services at the Veterans Hospital for many years. Mrs. Shasteen leaves her sister-in-law, Kay Waddell and family; nephews, Ray Waddell and family, Joe Waddell and family, and Raymond Shasteen and family; and niece, Mrs. Libby Trusell and family; and many special friends.
