Martha Shattuck m. Aaron Tillotson

Martha Shattuck married Aaron Tillison of Brooklyn, Ohio, according to page 206 of "The Memorials of The Descendants of William Shattuck" as shown here:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~robertkl/s...

Notes on that scanned page refer to when I input the details from the book, and a few other sources. Lemuel Shattuck made corrections to Keziah's death date on page 385. And, Martha's date of birth was taken from census data.

There are more details from other sources in our online database here:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

And a Tillotson site here:

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

The notes in our database have a few more details, if anyone is interested in obtaining more information. If anyone has more details or conflicting data, I would be interested in comparing notes.

Robert Kline
http://www3.telus.net/robertkline/
Hi, fellow Vermonter. I am a SHATNEY, and first became interested in your family name because I thought it might be a variant of SHATNEY. Apparently it is not. SHATTUCK derives from CHADWICK (named for the Anglo-Saxon bishop St. Chad) whereas SHATNEY was originally the French CHATEAUNEUF (FR; CAN) then SHATNIFF and CHATIGNY (NY in US) then SHATNEY (VT in US). DId you realize, by the bye, that of the 286 SHATTUCK soldiers in the Civil War, 272 fought with the Union Army? Not surprising, of course, because I think that most SHATTUCK families lived in NY and ME at that time.

(I'm the person who sent names from a Belvidere VT cemetery several months ago...seems like the SHATTUCKs are stalking me :-)

Thanks for your information.
I have looked at the information you referred to, however, I am still a bit unsure. I see that Daniel married Louis Morgan and she died about 1844, if I remember correctly. Then it would appear that he married Judith. However, when Sarah married Herbert Drake she listed her mother as Julia Johnson. I understatnd that Julia, may have be the same as Judith. However, Sarah was aborn about 1832/33 and would be while Daniel was married to Louise.

Hopefully, we will come across the documentation to Sarah's mother that will put my questions to rest.

Thanks again, Linda W

I haven't pursued them any further yet, but the dates and places fit with that of our other source:

"RESIDENCE: Lemuel Shattuck; MEMORIALS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM SHATTUCK;Dutton & Wentworth, Boston, 1855; p. 333.
Looking for date and POD of Sarah Jane Shattuck /Shattock. She was born about 1831/32 in Boston Mass, dau of Daniel Shattuck and Julia Johnson. She md Napoleon B Williams about 1848 in NY or PENN and had several children. They moved to Iowa abt 1854 and divorced about 1870. She md Herbert Drake in Jasper County Iowa Dec 1881. It appears they divorced as Herbert later married another lady and had a daughter.

I believe that Sarah was alive about 1900-1904 in Newton [Jasper County] Iowa, however, cannot find any trace of her afterwards.

Does anyone have any information?

Linda W, MO

ELMER-Squire, Lucy, Henry Susannah, John, Ammoriah,

1776-1852 I'm interested in corresponding with relations of ELMER family history that interconnects with CHASE, Lucy & parents (Henry & Susannah SHATTUCK). I'm working on a brickwall 2 generations off. As well, the info below was posted on another Rootsweb page (old email address). Anyone with information on this would also be of interest to me. Thank you.

"Your Windsor Cty, Vermont, Query on Henry Chase and Susanna Shattuck. Some information is contained in "The Descendants of William Shattuck" by Lemuel Shattuck, in the family of Susan's parents, Silas & Sarah (Jackson) Shattuck, on pages 135 & 136. Since Susan was born 16 Dec. 1759, Henry & Susan may have been married in Petersham, Mass., where her parents lived at that time until the parents moved to Hartland, Vt. about 1783. The Shattuck Book says that Susan died in 1838, Henry, 1841.
Susan was probably born in Marlborough, Mass., maybe Templeton, Mass. Framingham, Mass. is also a possiblity since father's brother & mother's sister [married to each other] lived there."
Shattuck in Indiana in late 1920 and early 1930.

Searching for Samuel Shattuck who wife died in Liberty, Indiana. I believe her name was Jan This is what we called her. I believe mother said her right name was Jeanetta not sure of the spelling. Her husband is listed as Samuel. I can only give you this information as I was very small when she lived in my mothers home. She lived with us when I was very little so I know it had to be in the late 1920 or early 1930. If anyone had any information I would appreciate knowing. I am just starting on my family and we called her Grandma therefore I am not sure if she is a relative or not but trying to find the proof. I can't find my grandparents as I have been told by my sisters (now all deceased) She would have been somehow connected to Smith of Indianapolis, IN or Hamiltons in Connersville, IN. I thank you very much for any help I can get as I don't drive (visually disabled). tcrail@insightbb.com_

Our notes for Claudine which indicates she is a Getchell are as follows:
"Claudine's parents were also born in ME as per the 1880 census. And, likely the daughter of Josiah 65, a Retired Merchant, and Sarah O. 60 Getchell? who are residing in the Shattuck household for that 1880 census which states Josiah has a kidney ailment.
RCK 24 Nov 2004"

Henry Perkins Shattuck married in 1870, not 1877 according to the following link:
http://www.homeoint.org/history/cleave/s/shattuckhp.htm

Or, could there be a Clara and a Claudine? Sisters even who married Henry on those dates?

I didn't find the 1900 census you refer to, but what we do have may be of some help. Perhaps our data may mesh with yours rather than conflict. It can be found here, minus our notes:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Robert Kline
http://www3.telus.net/robertkline/

Re: Myra L Shattuck's bible with Terry family descendancy

Thanks to your posting, I was able to tentatively connect Myra L. Shattuck and her immediate family to our main Shattuck database here:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

Perhaps that information will be of some value to you too.

In The Memorials of The Descendants of William Shattuck by Lemuel Shattuck. Dutton and Wentworth, Boston, MA. 1855, Page 332, Lemuel has Myra's father, and his brothers, dying in 1835.

Apparently that isn't so unless we have a similarly named family in the same area. I haven't found his brother's families yet to confirm this link. Perhaps they did die as stated.

Robert Kline
http://www3.telus.net/robertkline/
Frederick Shattuck of Millersburg, Ohio in 1876

Frederick Shattuck of Millersburg, Ohio is listed among the dead in a train accident.

The Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Train No. 5, The Pacific Express left a snowy Erie, Pennsylvania on the afternoon of December 29, 1876. As The Pacific Express plowed through the snow and crossed a bridge over the Ashtabula River, about 100 yards from the railroad station at Ashtabula, Ohio, the passengers heard a terrible cracking sound. In just seconds, the bridge fractured and the train plunged 70 feet into a watery abyss.

I am not related to this family, just passing on this information which comes from a website called "Ashtabula Bridge Disaster." The link for the site is listed below.
Joyce
http://home.alltel.net/arhf/bridge.htm

Sorry, but I can't answer this question. I was really focused on the name SHATNEY and noticed the SHATTUCK name only "in passing." Suggestion: Call (or write to) the town clerk's office in Belvidere and ask them to check for the name TILLOTSON in the Belvidere Center Cemetery. I have found town clerks to be enormously helpful to me. Also, you might want to check for the TILLOTSON surname in Lamoille County towns, such as Hyde Park, N. Hyde Park, Johnson, and Morrisville.

I have just discovered this line. In 1850 he settled in Peacham, manufacturing
carriages and furniture, which he continued until 1863, when he removed to
St. Johnsbury and engaged in ornamental and sign painting for E. & T. Fairbanks
& Co., under a contract, employing from six to twelve men, which business he
continued about sixteen years. Since that time he has owned and conducted a
fine farm in Danville about two years, and conducted a large shoe store in St.
Johnsbury over two years. He is now proprietor of the Batchelder block,
containing eleven tenements, on Prospect avenue, St. Johnsbury.
=============================

June SHATTUCK Birch 1920 - 2008 b. Stovertown, Ohio

DUNCAN FALLS, Ohio - June Shattuck Birch, 88, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Stovertown,(Muskingum County) Ohio, died Sept. 23, 2008, of metastatic liver cancer at her home.

Mrs. Birch, daughter of the late Wallace and Nina Shattuck, was born on June 4, 1920, on the family farm near Stovertown, Ohio in a house built by her great-grandfather. Her early education was in a one-room schoolhouse in Stovertown, moving on to Philo (Ohio) High School, where she graduated as valedictorian. She attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. for one year, transferring to Ohio State University, where she obtained a degree in education.

During World War II, Mrs. Birch taught in several Ohio schools. On May 13, 1945, she married John K. Birch, whom she had met at OSU, in the St. John's Lutheran Church in Stovertown. The couple lived in several places during their life together, including San Antonio, Texas, where two daughters, Nancy Anne and Carol Sue, were born, and Quincy, Ill., where a son, John Douglas, was born.

In Maryland, Mrs. Birch taught in a private school and several county elementary schools. Later she became a media center specialist and followed that career until retirement in 1990.

Aside from her family, art and travel were her strongest interests. She used art effectively in her teaching and library work. She was a talented watercolorist, enamelist and collector. She actively supported art education programs for schools and the public, and was a charter member of the National Museum for Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. She was an avid birder since childhood and was a member of the Maryland Ornithological Society.

Mrs. Birch's interest in travel began with a car-and-tent trip from Ohio to California in 1933, with her parents, her aunt, her two sisters and a cousin. This interest intensified as an adult when she received from her husband a trip to Europe as a 25th anniversary present. She had visited 41 countries and six continents.

Surviving are two sisters, Dollie Henderson of Eustis, Fla. and Mary Carol Mitchell of Philo, Ohio; three children, Nancy Wagner of Avon, Conn., Carol Travis of Naples, Fla., and John D. Birch of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at St. John's Lutheran Church on Ohio 555 in Stovertown, Ohio with burial in the church cemetery. Viewing will begin at 10:30 a.m.

To send a note of condolence to the family go to: www.thompsonfarusfuneralhome.com.
Thanks. I'd found your web pages in my search for Myra. They helped confirm how she fit in with the Terrys.

The DAR bible record reflects the following descendancy (I'm skipping the first three generations in the record, because they were reported to be based on a conversation with an elderly relative and appear to be wrong):

FOURTH GENERATION
Benjamin Terry -- married -- Joanna Pope (daughter of Seth Pope)
Children include:
(i) Sarah
(ii) Deborah
(iii) Thomas
(iv) Benjamin
(v) Joanna
(vi) Patience
(vii) Elnathan
(viii) Seth
(Benjamin Terry is a descendant of Mayflower passenger Thomas Rogers. Some of his ancestry is reported by the Thomas Rogers Society at http://www.thomasrogerssociety.com/p20.htm#i599 The bible record doesn't have the children's ages, but I've put the children in the age order recognized by the TRS soc'y)

FIFTH GENERATION
Elnathan Terry Sr (b. 4/17/1758; d. 12/31/1840) -- married -- Mary Kinyon (b. 4/8/1768; d. 1/15/1858)
Children include:
(i) Ruth (b. 3/25/1785)
(ii) Esther (b. 7/19/1787)
(iii) Polly (b. 9/9/1790; 12/29/1811)
(iv) Patience (b. 3/28/1793; d. 6/25/1808)
(v) ELNATHAN Jr. (b. 6/18/1795; d. 6/25/1866)
(vi) Joanna (b. 1/9/1798)
(vii) Thomas Kinyon (b. 3/1/1800; d. 4/4/1874)
(viii) Selinda (b. 6/21/1802)
(ix) Alanson (b. 12/21/1804; d. 10/1/1844)
(x) Infant son (b. 3/12/1807)
(xi) Ursulla (b. 6/20/1812)
(Mary Kinyon/Kenyon is included in the book "The American Kenyons," so her ancestry can be found fairly readily. I also have more information on some of the children -- such as spouses and children -- that I've found elsewhere)

SIXTH GENERATION
Elnathan Terry Jr. (b. 6/19/1795; d. 6/25/1866) -- married 5/6/1819 -- Eunice Lewis (b. 5/22/1803; d. 5/19/1873)
Children include:
(i) Lewis C. (b. 10/2/1820; d. 2/8/1899) -- married 4/13/1847 -- Hannah E. Wilcox (b. 5/23/1824; d. 12/31/1901)
(ii) Mary W. (b. 4/24/1822; d. 12/29/1891) -- married 9/29/1841 -- Lewis C. Bryant
(iii) Sally R (b. 2/18/1824; d. 2/4/1903) -- married 1/4/1843 -- Ruben E. Bryant
(iv) JOANNA (b. 9/10/1827) -- married 4/29/1850 -- J.S. SHATTUCK (b. 5/26/1827)
(v) Eunice (b. 8/10/1829; d. 10/20/1897) -- married 3/4/1851 - William White (b. 11/12/1833; d. 4/15/1902)
(vi) Elnathan K (b. 6/10/1832) -- married 9/21/1856 -- Emily Louise Stone (b. 2/17/1837)
(vii) Ira E. (b. 9/25/1835; d. 7/13/1875)
(viii) Ester (b. 5/26/1837) -- married 1/14/1858 - George Murray Franklin (b. 11/21/1833; d. 1/18/1907)
(ix) Mercy L. (b. 8/6/1837) -- married 2/11/1873 -- Charles A. Newton (b. 1/25/1845; d. 11/11/1887)
(The bible record includes a little information about how many children each had and includes a few names)

The seventh and eighth generations in the bible record are Elnathan Kinyon Terry's descendants.

My aunt's records reflect that Myra L. Shattuck's DAR application is file number 67105.
Myra L Shattuck's bible with Terry family descendancy

Looking for a transcript of a bible owned by Myra Shattuck, which probably includes her descendancy from

- Mary (Kinyon)and Elnathan Terry 1758-1840
- Elnathan Terry Jr. 1795-1866 and his wife Eunice (Lewis)
- Joanna (Terry)1827-? and J.S. Shattuck

My great great aunt filed a DAR application showing our descendancy from Elnathan Terry Sr. (through his daughter Esther who married Joseph Maxson Barber and their daughter Altana Barber) For her documentation, my great great aunt referenced family bible records given to her by Myra L. Shattuck of Norwich NY (and Myra's DAR file number). I'm applying for that record. My great aunt said that Myra Shattuck's records were notarized in Chenango Co, NY. I have also found a partial transcript of a bible record presented to the Guernsey Memorial Library in Norwich (Chenango Co) NY library that focuses on the descendancy of Elnathan Jr and Eunice's son Elnathan Kinyon Terry 1832-? The beginning of the Terry chapter says "Bible Published and Sold by M. E. Phinney - 1838 Cooperstown, N.Y. and sold by I. Tiffany, Utica, N.Y. Owned by Miss Myra Shattuck, Norwich, Chen. Co. N.Y."

I'm hoping that there was a more complete record of the Terry family in this bible that was once owned by Myra L. Shattuck. Does anyone know if it still exists or if there is a transcript?
