Squire / Spicy Shaver

Looking for information about a Squire Shaver & Spicy Jane (Rogers) Shaver. In 1850 they are living in Sullivan Tennessee with their children Andre, Eliza, Jas, Nathaniel there are more children born later I believe they are my ggreatmothers parents Nancy "Shaffer" McMasters. They are still there in 1860 but moved to Lawrence County Ohio betweeen 1860 & 1870. Squire died before the 1870 census was taken. I'm trying to see if they are my gggandparents. I've been told that they are Native American. Trying to track down that information about the Indian because the census has them listed as Mulatto.

What happened to Jacob Shaver? Canada, N Dakota - William Shaver = Harry Ecker?

Jacob Shaver b. abt 1853 in Canada, the first husband of my great grandmother, Inez Mabel Hornby b abt 1858 Wisconsin had one child William Shaver b. Jan 1880. In 1880, this family was living in Spiritwood, Stutsman County, ND - Dakota Territory actually. Nov 2, 1886 Inez married my great grandfather, Gordon James Ecker in Fargo, ND. So - between 1880 and 1886, Jacob Shaver either died, was divorced, or otherwise disappeared. I have not found death, divorce, marriage, or cemetery docs. Every search has come up futile. I tried contacting a couple William Shaver people in northern Calif, as I remember my parents visiting an Uncle Bill who per Mom "was not related". William Shaver, my Grandmother's half brother, seems to have changed names to Harry Ecker, same age and birth month in subsequent census docs where Inez is the mother of 4 and Harry is with the Ecker family.

I'm trying to find information on Winfield Scott Shaver or Shafer. I have found information on Winfield listed on several sites, but I am having trouble trying to figure out which is correct.

On the LDS web site, it list a Winfield Scott Shaver, born 23 Feb 1854, died 29 Oct 1893 in Fairmont, WV and the son of William Shaver and Josina Hill.

The 1860 Marion Co, WV census shows Winfield S. Shaver at 6 years of age living with his mother, Josina Shaver. His age puts his birth year at 1854.

Today, I found the death certificate of a Winfield Scott Shafer who was born Jan 19, 1854, died Oct 23, 1935. His parents are listed as John Shaver and Margaret Bassnett.

At first I thought there were two Windfield Scott Shaver's, but with the exception of the year of death, the month and day of birth and death are so close together, it makes me wonder.

If there is anyone who can help me, I would appreciate it.

Rosanna Shaver and Philip Barkley of Matilda Twp and Williamsburg Twp., Ontario

Rosanna Shaver 1823-1910.
Rosanna's death record states her father was Daniel Shaver. Many local historians think she was daughter of John Henry Shaver and Polly (Mary) Boyce. That would make her either Daniel's sister or daughter. If his daughter, Daniel would have been about 15 when Rosanna was born.

Rosanna married Philip Barkley 7 Feb 1838. John Henry Shaver & Michael Woolery signed as witnesses. Philip was born circa Oct 1811, died 16 June 1877. I can't find anything on his parents and am trying to tie him in with the Barkleys.

Can anyone help?

With thanks
Debbi

Hi Carol,

Talcott Andrew Shaver (my father's uncle), born 1844 Lowville, Lewis Co., NY. His father was Isaac Shaver, born 17 Dec. 1812, in Lowville. Mother was Mary Seline Bassett, born 12 June 1817 in Newark, NJ. She died 16 Jan. 1892 in Lawrence, MI. Her Bassett family arrived 2nd ship(the Fortune) after the Mayflower at Plymouth, MA.,1621.

Isaac's children (all born in Lowville): Talcott Andrew, George, Sarah, Leon Selwyn "Frank" (my grandfather), and Emma. In 1858 the family relocated to Lawrence, Michigan.

Isaac enlisted in the Michigan Volunteers in January 1862 and died of pneumonia at Nashville, Tn about Sept. 11, that year. He is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery apparently under the misspelled name of Isaac Shower.

Isaac's father was Andrew Shaver/Shafer, veteran of War of 1812. Mother Margaret Bellinger.

More information is available.

Rob Shaver
shaverb-17@comcast.net
Nov. 9, 2008

Not sure if you are still looking. Don't know if any connections - but I too am looking for Shaver Family from St. Catherine's Ontario. Charles & George Shaver (b: 1888 & 1886?) were brothers. Charles married Catherine and move to NJ with their 6 children in 1930. Looks like George married Mabel. That's about all I know for now. I just started my husband's side of the tree. Any connection?
Yes, Aaron Shafer was my great-great-grandfather. He moved to Indiana and married Margaret Shafer (no relation -- at least I don't think so!) They had several kids: Thomas, Nancy, Josephus lived to adulthood, although Nancy died young soon after her marriage to George Strain.

It is wonderful to hear from you! Can you e-mail me at 42cats@comcast.net? I am in touch with several other Shafer/Shaffer/Shaver researchers and would love to compare notes with you and see if you have had contact with these other researchers who are related to us. I have heard of your mom before and might have had contact with her in the past (my notes are so disorganized right now), but I don't think so -- I think I was TRYING to make contact with her at one point. I'd have to go through my files to be sure.

Hope to hear from you soon! Also, please let me know in your e-mail whether you mind if I cc: my e-mail replies to our cousins who are researching. We find we can move more information around amongst us this way. Oh! And they have some wonderful family photos they have shared with me! Sorry if I sound overly excited, but it is so much fun to bump into another person related to me through our Shafer/Shaffer/Shaver lines! I'll tell you more in e-mail away from the message boards.

You might try searching on W.R. "Dick" Shaver, first black Sherriff of Boley, OK, killed in the line of duty in 1905. It is an interesting story and I ran across it when the Shaver family intersected the Johnson family. Dick Shaver was from AR and was sent out from Judge Parker. There are numerous online accounts of his death.

Liz
