SHAW family of Granville, Nova Scotia

My current genealogical interest is in documenting my maternal great grandmother's SHAW family history. Susan Shaw[1842-1917] was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia to Isaiah Shaw [1798-1874] and his second wife, Sarah Lyons.
Isaiah Shaw was the first child born to David Shaw [1770-1840] and his wife, Desire/Desiah Phinney.
David Shaw's parents, Captain Moses Shaw [1735 - 1821] and Ann Phinney, were married 1762 in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, and came to Granville Township (near Bridgetown) Nova Scotia about 1760, after the expulsion of the Acadians.
The father of Captain Moses Shaw, also called Moses Shaw [1704 -1792] was said to have been a United Empire Loyalist, and may have been the Moses Shaw who received a land grant in what is now St John, New Brunswick in 1784.
The Shaw family goes back to John Shaw, who emigrated to Plymouth Colony from England between 1623-26.
I would like to correspond with anyone who is interested in the same family.
Doris Gates Thorpe of Dartmouth, N.S.

Hi, Wondering if there are any family members researching this line of Shaws, or Downer family. Hoped Heather was still out there also. My grandmother was Allie Shaw born in 1910 to Arthur Shaw and Effie Downer. Hope to hear from someone in this family line. Thanks,Shirley

Ellen Shaw nee Barry born British Isles 1882

I am searching for possible descendants of Ellen Barry. She married Robert Warburton Shaw in Liverpool in 1911. They had three children - Robert P, Noreen M and Lawrence D Shaw. Robert and Ellen moved to Leamington Spa ca 1913. Robert was badly gassed at the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 and died in Warwickshire in 1920 of the effects of his injuries. I think Ellen may have returned to Ireland, where her father John was born. The Shaws lost touch with Ellen and her children. Any information gratefully received.

Forrest Shaw

I am looking for information on Forrest Shaw. I know that he was in the army in approx 1942-1944 stationed in N Africa and Italy (that I know of at least). His wife was named Dora, maiden name unknown at this time. I do know that she was a teacher and she lived in Stony Ridge, OH during WWII and that his mother Anna lived in Pemberville, OH. If I have done my research correctly; I have found Forrest's middle initial to be E and his brithdate to be 7/22/1918 and also that he died on 3/25/1993. That is all that I can find so far. I had come across a large number of V-mail letters from Dora to Forrest and want to try to find them and/or thier family. There are many names in the letters so, please feel free to ask. Any help is appreciated!
Jennifer

Lucy Shaw, Matthew Irving

Hello,

I am looking for information on Lucy Shaw, my great great grandmother. The only biographical information I have on her is that she married Matthew Irving sometime around 1880. Thier son, Matthew Stanley Shaw Irving (1880- 1917), who was born in Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland, married Emilie (Emily, Emile?) Butterworth (1883- 1914) on 8 Nov 1906 in Minnedosa, Manitoba, Canada.

The only other information I can provide is that Matthew (Lucy's husband) was previously married to Jane Dickson, and had five children by her- Margaret Dalgliesh, Mary Jane, William, Janet Dickson and Elizabeth- all surnamed Irving. The first four children were born in Ruthwell, Dumfries, Scotland, and Elizabeth was born in Dornock, Dumfries, Scotland.

I am interested in finding out any biographical information I can on Lucy Shaw, as well as information on her parentage. If someone could provide some leads, I'd be most grateful.

Thank you,

David Lee Irving (perfessordave@hotmail.com)

I am hopeful that you can point me in the right direction in an attempt to obtain information… I am embarking on a major endeavor to trace family/descendants. My name is Christie Shaw and my Father was the late Jesse LeGrande Shaw and my Aunt the late Bessie Bottoms were born to Pearlie Shaw Bottoms and Sol bottoms in 1924; at least Bessie was (born in 1924).

My grandmother Pearlie Shaw Bottoms and Sol Bottoms were Orangeburg, SC residents in 1924. I am trying to learn of their history. It may be obvious that they landed South by way of slave trading and the last name Shaw may have been that of those that owned them during the slavery era.

It is my hope to learn as much of them as I can so that I have history to pass down to my grandson who's now carrying my father's name… Jesse LeGrande Shaw. It's even our hope to find how/why the name LeGrande was given to my father. But all of this can be discovered if I just get on the right track to finding more about who my grandparents were.

Egbert Shaw, born c. 1798 in NYS, died after 1880 census

I'm looking for any information available on my ancestor Egbert Shaw. At the 1880 census he was living in Kingsbury, Washington Co., NY, with his son John B. Shaw. The census record says that he was 82 years old and that he and his parents were born in NY.

From other sources I've learned that he may have been born in Dutchess Co., NY. His wife's name was Laura Beebe, about whom I know virtually nothing. She doesn't appear in the 1880 census record, so it seems likely that she had already passed away.

Egbert and Laura had 2 sons that I know of: John B., born in Saratoga Co. in 1833, and Amander A., from whom I'm descended, born in Kingsbury on Oct 2, 1840. Both sons served in the Civil War, John in the 5th Vermont Infantry, Amander in the 11th Vermont Infantry/1st Vermont Heavy Artillery.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Dave Shaw
daveshaw@bellsouth.net

obituary Mary Jane (Foster) Shaw/ Jelly --died Lincoln, Ks.

Mary Jane (Foster)Shaw / Jelly

Was married 1st to Simeon Henry Shaw. They had one daughter, Laura Alice Shaw, born FEB-29-1868 at Fort Harker, (now Kanopolis), Ellsworth County, Kansas. They divorced.

She later married Sam Jelly (Jelley) and had one son Thomas.

Mary died MAY-17-1934 at Lincoln, Lincoln County, Kansas and is buried in the city cemetery.

In 1868, Mary was attacked by indians. The rather graphic clipping is below, along with her obituary;

Janesville Gazette
Janesville, Wisconsin
Tuesday Evening
August 18, 1868

VERY LATEST NEWS
BY TE:EGRAPH
===============
FROM ELLSWORTH
-------
St. Louis, August 18, -- A letter dated Ellsworth, Kansas, of the 14th, says that on Monday, the 12th, some two hundred Indians appeared on Spillman creek, about 10 miles (closer to 30) northeast of Ellsworth. Arriving at the house of Mr. Shaw they caught him and beat him unmercifully, and drove him away. The devils then caught Mrs. Shaw and her sister [Sarah Alice] and violated their persons. Some three hundred or more of them continued to abuse these helpless women til long after they had become senseless, and then destroyed the property and left them for dead. They then proceeded to the residence of Mr. Bacon, beat him in the same way, and violated the person of his wife, leaving her in very critical condition. It is feared that the women subjected to these outrages will not recover.

They met and abused several other citizens by beating them. After destroying all within reach they left for the north. These poor women say that for a space of six hours they were subjected to ill treatment and they showed marks of the most cruel usage, made by being beaten in attempts to defend themselves. A detachment of soldiers were sent after the Indians from Fort Harker, accompanied by fifty or sixty settlers. On Wednesday night they sent for reinforcements and on Thursday a full company under command of Col, Benteen had come on Indians who had 10 or fifteen women surrounded in a house and he had driven the redskins away but whether killed any or not was not known. Those are probably some who have been murdering and committing other outrages on Solomon Creek.
***************************
Lincoln Sentinel-Republican
Lincoln, Kansas
May 24, 1934

Mary Jelly

Mary Jelly was born April 21, 1845, in Lucerne County, Pa., died in Lincoln, Kan., May 17, 1934. Age 88 years, 26 days.

Mrs. Jelly came to this country 69 years ago, settling in Saline County on a homestead 2½ miles east of Tescott, with a colony of early settlers few of whom are still living.

In 1869 [wrong 187_] she was married to Sam L. Jelly, then County Clerk of Ellsworth County. Later she moved to Beverly where she lived for 19 years, after which she moved to Lincoln where she has since made her home with her son.

She leaves to mourn her departure her son, Thomas L., and a daughter, Mrs. Alice Gorum of Chicago; 12 grandchildren and a large number of great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the Methodist church in Lincoln. She attended whenever she could and always enjoyed the services.

She died a child of God, testifying of her readiness to go. Her lot was anything but easy here and we feel that she will enjoy the Home over there for which she longed in her later days on earth.

Funeral services were conducted form the Methodist church with Rev. Roy D. Plott in charge Sunday, May 20. Burial in Lincoln Cemetery.

John O Shaw and Family from Roger Mills Oklahoma

I, like probably many of you at one time or another, have hit the proverbial brick wall tracing the Shaw's beyond Oklahoma. From family records, census returns, and land records I've only been able to trace my Shaw line back to Roger Mills, Oklahoma.

Family records indicate John O Shaw was born 14MAR1832 in or around Pittsburgh, PA and married Sarah Hamilton born 10MAY1834 in Dartans, Castlederg, County Tyrone, Ireland.

They had five children; Mary Ann (31MAR1863 ~ 14FEB1953), Thomas Knox (17AUG1866 ~ 05APR1922), Margaret Isbell (08JUN1870 ~ 01JUN1945), Mathew Hamilton (15MAY1872), and Charles Carlton (31AUG1877 ~ 26AUG1910). Mary and Thomas have been shown to have been born in Pittsburgh and Margaret, Mathew, and Charles are shown as being born in Sedalia, Missouri. However when searching census returns I'm unable to find any information prior to the 1900 census.

Several years ago Shirley Wade and Judy Tracy helped me add some additional info but unfortunately I'm still not able to get past the 'wall'. Appreciate if anyone has any info or might be able to point in the right direction.

Doris M Shaw

I'm looking for information regarding the siblings, parents, and aunts/uncles of my grandmother, Doris May Shaw. Here's what I know:

Doris May Shaw, born 1/23/32 in England, place unknown (may have been around Doncaster where my mother was born). Died 4/15/07 in Spokane, WA USA. She married a Charles Frank Kenneth Duncan, son of Sylvester Duncan (born 4/7/1893) and Judie Howard.

Doris and Frank were divorced, date currently unknown, and she returned to her maiden name. I do know she came to America through Frank, whom worked for the united states military (Frank, by the way, is still alive, just really hard to get ahold of).

I'm trying to trace back this side of the family beyond Doris, and I'm having a very hard time because no one can remember names or dates. It's important to me, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. Thanks.

Shaws in Virginia

I have read some of the posts and it sounds like maybe my Shaws may have some connection. I too have a Rebecca, William and James Shaw. There is a Calhoun amongest the clan too.
My family resided in Washington Co. Virginia.Mary shaw , the mother to my James E. Shaw was born in Tennessee (probably Sullivan Co, ). The Calhoun's noted were from Ashe, Co., N.C.
Does any of this connect to your family?

Shaw in Louisiana / Alabama - looking for Wm. H. Shaw b. abt. 1835

In the ever-frustrating job of breaking through the brick wall we've hit, we're trying to find the parents of William Henry Shaw b. about 1835. He married Tabitha Martin in 1866 and died on Jan. 6, 1907 in Accomack Co., VA. But he lists his birthplace differently on census records etc. - some instances it's listed as VA, one census lists Cinceneratto. No idea what that is, no such place.

On footnote.com, I found his Civil War records. He fought in the 8th Alabama C Company which saw most of it's battle in Virginia, which is why we believe he settled in VA. He was 26 when enlisting in 1861 (his occupation is Pilot), and he lists his birthplace as Lousiana, which is the first place we've seen he might be from LA. Moreover, he was listed as a deserter in 1865. This is why we think he wasn't "truthful" on later census records about his birthplace.

So I don't know if he was in fact born in Louisiana and moved to Alabama with his family at some point during his childhood, or did he come to America to LA as a young man (family verbal history says the Shaws came from Scotland), and moved to AL at some point prior to the War.

I haven't had much luck looking at the LA census data, but my head is starting to spin so I needed a break from it.

If anyone has Shaw family from LA or AL I'd love to hear from you and see if we're in the same line.

Thanks,
Kim Shaw

John Haldershaw, Holdershaw, Shaw, Eastham MA, Frankfort ME

This message is posted for anyone having problems finding their ancestor John Haldershaw, since most of this family changed the spelling to Shaw by the early 1800s, and most descendants are looking for the spelling SHAW.

John Haldershaw moved from Cape Cod - place given on the Frankfort, Hancock Co., 1790 - 1800 U. S. census, Maine - spelling: John Haldershaw, and his son on the 1790 census: John Haldershaw Junr. Frankfort was later in Waldo Co., ME. John married Sarah Cole, daughter of Joseph Cole and Sarah Nickerson of Harwich, Barnstable Co., MA, on 4 Dec 1760 in Eastham, Barnstable Co., MA.

John was received in the 1st church of Orleans MA, formerly 1st Church of Eastham, MA, 29 Sep 1773. He served in the Revolution as Corp. and Sgt. John sold his store at Bald Hill Cove in Frankfort to his son, John Jr. 28 Dec 1802 (Hancock Co. deeds 12:134). In the margin of Orrington TR p. 120 is found: "Men now living in Frankfort hae left off the Holder name, now Shaw."

John Haldershaw/Holdershaw/Shaw died by 7 May 1807 when Asa Bean was appointed administrator of his estate. .His son John Jr. was then a mariner of Boston, MA and on 16 Sep 1807 deeded land to Asa Bean with a house and barn at Bald Hill Cove, Frankfort, ME. The land was bounded on one side by William Holdershaw.

The children I have listed are are John, probably Mary, Joseph, Hope, William and Delilah Shaw. They were probabably all born in Barnstable Co., MA.

John Haldershaw (later John Shaw?) moved to Frankfort with his father, then to Boston, MA before September 16, 1807. He isn't listed as John Haldershaw in Maine on the 1800 census. He may have moved to Boston before the 1800 census, since I cannot identify him as any of the other Shaw names on that census. John served in the Revolutionary War. His father, then John was listed on the 1790 U.S. Census. John had two females living with him (wife and daughter?), and a son under 16 years.

Probably Mary Shaw m. Israel Mayo Bef. November 07, 1807. Israel Mayo with a wife Mary is listed as one-sixth heir to John Holdershaw's estate.

Joseph Shaw m. November 25, 1790 in Orrington, Penobscot Co., ME, Rachel Cole.

Hope Shaw m. December 24, 1787 in Orrington, Penobscot Co., ME, Richard Ellingwood, s/o Richard Ellingwood and Sarah Slater of Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. Hope died after 18 Jul 1829. On 4 Nov 1807 Hope Elllingwood deeded "all the rights in the estate of my father John H. Shaw late of Frankfort." (Hancock Co. deds 23:286).

William Haldershaw, or William Holdershaw, William Shaw was baptized March 27, 1714 Eastham MA, died June 10, 1856, 82y 4m (g.s.) Frankfort, Waldo Co., ME, buried in Twining Cemetery, Cole's Corner, Winterport, Waldo Co., Maine. He married Hannah Cole January 21, 1798 Orleans, Barnstable Co., MA. Hannah Cole, daughter of Dea. Abiel Cole and Hannah Linnell, was born October 20, 1777 Eastham, MA, and died before October 1816 (probably Frankfort, ME). Their son, William Shaw moved to Etna, Penobscot Co., ME. William Sr. married (2) 6 Oct 1816 Abigail (Baker) Linnell, b 27 May 1790 d/o Benoni Baker and Abigail Snow.

Delilah Shaw b Bet. 1775 - 1777, Delilah was baptized January 26, 1777 in Eastham, MA as dau of Jno Shaw, died January 19, 1860 a. 84y (obit and g.s.) Stockton Springs, Waldo Co., Maine, buried Ellingwood's Corner cemetery, Winterport, Waldo Co., ME, m. July 19, 1792 Orrington, Penobscot Co., Maine, Ralph Ellington of Boston, MA, was a brother of Richard above. He was born Bet. January 11, 1770 - 1771, d April 11, 1857, at his death was residing in "back settlement called Goshen," in Winterport, Waldo Co., Maine. Ralph and Delilah settled on lot #2 Bald Hill Cove, Hampden, Penobscot Co., ME, then moved to Winterport.

Delilah's father was called Jno. (Jonathan) on her baptism and John H. Shaw on a deed.

When looking for this family, use the spellings John Haldershaw, Holdershaw, and Shaw, especially for the earliest generations.

I am not a descendant of this family, though hope this will help researchers looking for Haldershaw, Holdershaw and Shaw of this family, since I have not seen a post for the first two surnames on a surname board of these names, nor on the Shaw board.

Deborah Shaw Mason

Sources:

Maine Families in 1790, Vol. 3, Maine Genealogical Society, Special Publication No. 11, Edited by Ruth Gray, Associate Editor Joseph Crook Anderson II, Picton Press, Rocport, Maine, 1st ed. published 1992 (Third Printing January 2001).

U.S. Census, Maine.

Descendants of John Haldershaw.
