Daniel and Elizabeth Shea

Looking for any information on Daniel and Elizabeth Shea who moved to Giants Grave, Briton Ferry, Neath, South Wales in late 1840s with their children Jane, John (Johnny) and Mary. They became bakers in Giants Grave apparently a family business I have learnt. Mary went on to marry Mr Flynn and John her brother lived close by with his wife and was a mariner for most of his life. Jane married Cornelius Callaghan and they had two further surviving children Daniel and Dennis or Denis, my great great grandfather. Any information about Daniel and Elizabeth in Ireland would be appreciated we have references to Bandon for Mary, Cork and Ireland for John and Elizabeth and a reference at one point to Tipperary.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can go no further back that 1818 to 1822 when Daniel and Elizabeth were born

Mike, you are correct in that Mattie's son was born before she married Mr. Shea. Her maiden name was HUNT, and she lived with her parents. Her son was William McKinley Hunt, also known as Mack. (I believe this was the Newell in the census.) Mattie lived with Mack and his wife and children, and died in Mack's home in 1963. Mack is my grandfather, and I remember Mattie from visits to their home. Nothing was ever said about Mr. Shea. The odd thing is, we called her "Shea", and it wasn't until she died that I realized that was her last name. No one in the family, including my dad and aunt, could tell me anything, so we can only surmise the circumstances. I have the original marriage certificate, Mattie's death certificate, and obituary, but no other info. I will keep looking, and appreciate any insights or suggestions.
PS, are you related to this family? I believe your family tree has a connection to Campbell, which is my grandmother's family (Mack's wife, Mary Alice Hargrave).
Thaks again,
Carole Hunt Pinkham

A review of the 1900-1930 U. S. Census records shows Mattie Hunt gave birth to a son enumerated as Newell b. Jun 1896 in the 1900 USC and Mack age 13 in the 1910 USC. She was living with her parents at the time. In the 1920 USC she is alone and listed as a widow. In 1930 she is living with William M C Hunt and listed as his sister, however, a review of the census image shows mother was crossed out and replaced by "sister." I can't explain the reference to Newell, but Mack is explainable inasmuch as there is a Wm Mc Kinnley Hunt found in the WW I Draft Registration records living in Austin with a DOB of 9 Jul 1897. William McKinnley Hunt died in Austin on 19 Nov 1968. Still cannot find any information on James given the lack of specific information. It may behoove you to get a copy of Mattie's obituary which may contain more information.
After reading you post again, I note you state she is in Austin in 1914 with her 15 year old son William Hunt (b. abt 1899). This would imply she was previously married to someone named Hunt inasmuch as Mattie did not marry Mr. Shea until 1912 or William is her brother as stated in the 1930 U. S. Census.

Looking for James D Shea who married Mattie Vaughn Hunt in Kyle, Hays Co., Texas, on 17 Nov. 1912. Nothing else is known about this man, where he came from or what happened to him. By 1914 Mattie had moved to Austin, Texas, with her 15 yr old son William M. Hunt. Mr. Shea was not with them, but Mattie went by the last name of Shea until she died in 1963. I have the marriage certificate and a copy of the courthouse record of the marriage. Don't know if Mr. Shea died or left. He may have been from New Braunfels.

Ronald Clifton Loder Gore in 1914, I presume before he went off to WW1, as they married in 1914 and he enlisted in 1914. I think she is a relative of mine but I am still trying to prove her ancestry. Would you know much on their family?
Thanks
Lyn

I have a Lillian Shea in my family tree. She was my grandfather's mother. She lived in Springfield, MA and was married to Joseph Shea. They had 7 children :John, Mary, Anna, Robert, Margaret, Thomas and Dorothy. My grandfather is Robert Shea. The 1930's census lists her birth place as New York. Her mother's name was Lyla McCool. I still do not have any information on the correct spelling but I was told the McCool's were from update New York and they spoke French. I assume she is the other Lillian Shea mentioned born in New York but the death date seems too late. I have more research to do.

Re: John Shea - Dingle Penninsula, County Kerry

Hi Sara,

I saw your posting, quoting a will abstract from our website:
www.osheaclan.org

"Letters of Administration" were issued to the next of kin if someone died intstate and allowed the person to deal with the estae of the deceased. "Under L100" refers to the sum of money in the estate of the deceased as being less than 100 pounds sterling (the currency at the time).
"Late of Dingle" means the deceased person had lived in Dingle.

"Granted at Cork" means the Letters of Administration were issued at Cork rather than say the Principal Registry which was in Dublin. Note that most of the wills and Letters of Administration which were granted/issued at Dublin were destroyed in the fire in 1922 but some of the other wills and Letters of Admin may have survived as they were not in Dublin at the time. The National archives hosues any remaining wills or Letters of Administration but often only the abstract is extant.

Regards,
Margaret (O'Shea) Jordan
www.osheaclan.org

Shea from Co. Laoise

I have been researching my family tree but am stuck. My father came from co. laoise and is registered as living in Clonamone and attending Emo National School. His name was Kevin Shea (b.1929) and had an elder sister Kathleen (b.1924) also a brother michael. I have been told that his mother was Catherine Shea (b.1904) possibly unmarried as the fathers name is not on his birth certificate. She later married again and had three more daughters. My father was bought up by foster parents, mr and mrs Gormley, whilst michael was raised by his aunt mary ellen shea (b.early 1900s). I was also told that Catherine (Kate) Shea's parents were James Shea and Elizabeth (liz) Nolan.

If anyone can help me with my search, I would be really grateful for a reply thanks.

Thomas Shea "History of the Catholic Church In Indiana"

History of the Catholic Church In Indiana Charles Blanchard, Bowen 1898
THOMAS SHEA, who lives at No. 1525 East Market street,
Indianapolis, Ind., was born in the parish of Drummond, county Kerry, Ireland, near Waterville, and about five miles from the birthplace of the great Iriah patriot, Daniel O`Connell, December 23, 1835. His mother died when he was quite young, but the father is still living, in Indianapolis, cared for by his sons. Thomas Shea came to the United States in 1864, landing in New York July 24.
Michael Shea is one of the most remarkable men living in this or any other country, mainly perhaps on account 0f his great age. The date of his birth, which is well authenticated, was September 19, 1771, and hence at the present time, 1898, he is more than 116 years old. He was born in county Kerry, Ireland, and in his youth learned the trade of blacksmith, a trade followed by many of the male members of his family, both before him and after him. He was well acquainted with the patriot, Daniel O`Connell, being only six years his junior.
Before he married he had passed the half century mark, and now is well preserved, being active on his feet, and possessing his sight, hearing and intellectual powers to a remarkable degree. The fact of his great age is in part explained by his being descended from ancestors famous for their longevity, his father living to be 104 years old, and his grandfather to be 114. His wife, Joanna Tehan, died in 1854. By her he had five children, viz: Thomas, Julia, Mary, Michael (deceased), and James, the youngest of the family, who came to the United States with his father in 1864 and with whom the father resides.
Thomas Shea, the subject of this sketch, learned the trade of blacksmith from his father, and came to the United States with him in 1864, settling during the same year in Indianapolis. On November 10, 1865, he was married to Miss Mary Kirby, who was born in county Kerry, and came to the United States in early life, though her parents have never crossed the sea. Three sisters, cousins of Mrs. Shea, Kate, Mary and Bridget, consecrated their lives to the church, being at one time Sisters at the S. S. chapel in Indianapolis. Mary died there and was buried in the convent yard, the other two being still in the
chapel.
Mr and Mrs Thomas Shea have four children living and four dead. The living are as follows: Julia, Michael, Timothy and Mary. James died June 9, 1896, at the age of twenty-one years. He was a most worthy young man, and his loss was deeply felt, not only by his family, but by all that knew him. Thomas and Joanna died in early life, and one died an infant.
Thomas Shea has been employed by the Pennsylvania Railway company as a blacksmith since 1877, and James is also in the employ of the same company. Both are excellent men, in every way worthy of confidence, and are held in high esteem by those that know them. Both brothers and their families are devout Catholics.

His full name is Murray Stanton Shea; father, Jeremiah (Jerry)(mother Lucie Hall); gfather John (wife Bridget Coffey) from Cahirciveen, County Kerry, Ireland. The majority of Shea family still lives in and around Chicago, IL. Jerry settled in Dryden, MI.

I have a John Cornelius Shea, born in Cambridge in 1856 to a Cornelius John Shea and Margaret Sullivan. He became a lawyer, moved to Nebraska and became a State Senator after 1880. He died in 1891 in Omaha, Nebraska. Cornelius John Shea was born in 1828 in Kerry, Ireland. I have been trying to connect him to my James Joseph Shea from Kerry. He lived on Bank St., Cambridge with the Sheas and Sullivans.

Hi,
I think your Timothy and my Sheas are probably related. I have since found two sisters of James & John. Mary Shea married Martin Shea in 1855 in Cambridge, probably St. Peter's Church. On the same day, must have been a double wedding, their sister, Catherine married John Murphy. Mary and Martin went to live in Springfield and raised a family. Catherine & John lived in Cambridge. Catherine may have died and John remarried because the 1880 census has John's wife listed as Johanna. I am still trying to find where in Kerry the Sheas came from. Have sent for marriage, death records from Boston and all they say is Ireland! Have you had any luck?
As I said before many of my Sheas were printers also.

Not lkely if your sure he's from County Cork. My Michael was from County Kerry, Waterville to be exact where Charlie Chaplin's favorite golf course was. But I have no real knowledge of any male siblings of Michael only female one and only sure of Mary. So I suppose it's possible but if there is a relation at all it would probably be a cousin but no Charles has come up yet.

Hi,
I'm looking for information on my great, great uncle Jeremiah shea, he was born around 1875 in killunleigh, co kerry and emigrated to america with his brother daniel (born 1884) in 1905 from queenstown to Ellis island, it states on the ships manifest that they were heading to Mojave california to work on the railways. I don't have much more information than this other than they had a sister ellen (born 1878) and a brother James. I was told by my grandmother that Jeremiah was shot and killed but we don't know how or why or where he is buried. If any of this sounds familiar please let me know. i look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks, Kieran

I think there might be a connection with you and chappymom and me, ??? my g grandad Timothy Shea married Sabina O'Connor at St. Peters Pauls Church in South Boston. I that Timothy lived there in South Boston, married and relocated to Cambridge, due to Printing jobs availablity. I am totally stuck, no one was listed with Timothy when he came to Boston in 1836 at the age of 6, from New Brunswick. His parents names were John Shea and Catherine Early. Relative has said Timothy parents were from Ireland. But no records to located them in Boston and if Timothy had any brothers or sisters or aunt or uncles. The difficult thing is that all the Irish in 1840's and up traveled to South Bostons Church St. Peters and Pauls because they had started a school there, mostley taught religion. But they traveled from all over to go to that Church to baptized children, get married and so forth. I would like to discuss this more, because I think there is a connection.

I have Nora Shea (Honorah) born in Kentucky in 25-SEP-1848. Her death certificate says her father was Dennis Shea born in Ireland. Her mother is listed only as Kleilnan, born in Ireland. Nora married William Bain Showalter in May of 1870. Nora shows up in an orphanage in the 1860 census in Louisville, KY. Dennis Shea shows up in the 1860 census living with Thomas Shea and his family. I'm assuming (for the moment) that Thomas is a son of Dennis Shea. Do you have any more information on Nora or Dennis Shea or Nora's mother?
Thanks for any help.
Carolyn

Can someone please help me understand some things in the following...

Abstracts of Wills and Admins. Kerry (Vol. 11 & 14 O’Kief)
Shea, John, May 25, under L100, Letters of Admin, per. estate, late Dingle, Co. Kerry, baker, d: 16/4/1871 same place, granted at Cork to Mary Noonan, wife of Thomas Noonan, Minard, Dingle, Co. Kerry, labourer, sister and one of the next of kin of deceased.

from (http://www.osheaclan.org/Kerry_Wills_Admins.pdf)

What do the following mean:

under L100, Letters of Admin, per. estate,

late Dingle, Co. Kerry, baker,

granted at Cork to Mary Noonan,

This last one 'granted at Cork' is of particular interest

Thanks in advance
