Colin,
All my Shearer relations are decended from John Shearer born 1664 buried in Botriphine church yard Banffshire, Scotland. There is a family plot there with quite afew decendants they all seem to be farmers according to the grave stones.
Regards,
Iain Craigen Shearer.

Yes I'm sure. He was killed in a work place accident. My sister has the paper work regarding his death and allocation of social security monthly benefits to his surviving children. She also remembers his death and has the newspaper obit. It's very strange though that we can find records anywhere.

Ellen Shearer wife of John Shearer from Ohio census 1860

I have found an Ellen Shearer (age 19) wife of John Shearer (age24) on the 1860 Ohio census, they have a son Perry (age2) listed. I looked at the actual census and I don't think there is any spelling or transcription error on the names.

I can't seem to locate Ellen anywhere else - wondering how to go about finding her and her maiden name. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Marion Jerome Coleman and Verna Shearer

Looking for any family of Marion Jerome Coleman (1876-1926 and Verna Shearer (1886-?)(daughter of Monroe or Roe Shearer). My father's sister was married to William Roe "Bill" Coleman (1914-1983, Marion and Verna's son, I have ended up with a lot of old pictures of the Coleman and Shearer family, from 1916+/- to the 60s, including a lot of Bill (William Roe) while he was in the Navy. They had at least one other son I think named Marion Robert Coleman b 1924. Both boys were born in Cotton Co. Oklahoma I beleive. I did not know Bill that well, met him a dozen times during our summer vacations. If there is any of his family that wants copies of the pictures, or even the originals, I would be glad to help in any way I can. I KNOW it would mean a lot finding something like this to me.

I might be able to help on some information about Arthur and his family. I am Arthur's gg-granddaughter. Richard Hooker Shearer 5/26/1836 to 1/29/1917 was my great-grandfather, George Edwin Shearer 2/28/1865 - 11/24/1947, my grandfather and Virginia Shearer, my mother. I can print out the family history for you that I have or send information to you that you want in bits and pieces. I would be interested in the information you have also. Did you know that Charles' brother Willow was named because his mother was run over by a wagon near Willow Springs, Wyoming Territory and delivered him near the springs? That is why he was named Willow Springs. Also, Arthur Benton was a Telegrapher too? And an inventor. Several members of the family were in the newspaper business. Do you have any information past Arthur's father and mother? You can contact me at <a href="http://www.cordandjudy@comcast.net" target="_blank">www.cordandjudy@comcast.net

Hi. I'm actually not directly descended from the Livingstons or the McKowns, but I'm connected through so many families that keep leading back to them.
I am connected to all these via my Duncan lines. Duncans married Vaughns, Sarah Ann Vaughn's brother, Josiah Jackson Vaughn, married Elizabeth Strode Duncan. Elizabeth was the daughter of Matthew Duncan and Elizabeth Breckenridge, and the sister of my g-g-g-grandfather, Alexander Breckenridge Duncan. That is only one path that leads me to the McKowns and Shearers and Livingstons. :-)

I found a death record for Enos V. Shearer, and I'm guessing his middle name was Vaughn after his mother's maiden name. I don't remember if I already filled you in on this, but Enos Shearer died in Centralia, Lewis County, Washington 2 Apr 1920. His second wife, Mary Jane Perry, who he married in about 1872, died 5 Jan 1919 in Centralia, WA. She was born Sep 1846 in Ohio. Enos and Mary Jane (sometimes called Jennie) had one son, William Harvey Shearer, born 10 Oct 1879 in Missouri, and died 17 Dec 1960 in Centralia, WA.

I don't know anything about the Smith connection. Sorry.

I can tell you that Willis and Sarah's son James married Sarah Hannah Perry in about 1870, probably in Missouri. They had four children that I know of:
James, born about 1871 in MO; George, b. abt 1873, MO; Charles Edward, born 12 Aug 1879 in Stewartsville, De Kalb County, MO; married Dora A. Pickett 8 Mar 1900 in De Kalb County, MO; died 5 May 1945, Chillicothe, Livingston County, MO. Dora was the daughter of Joseph H. Pickett and Marion Warren, and was born 16 Aug 1879 in Stewartsville, De Kalb County, MO; died 28 May 1879 in Kansas City, Jackson County, MO; Nellie C., b. Dec 1886 in MO, married a Mr. Graham.

Matthew Shearer married twice. He married Marinda Livingston 22 Dec, 1852 in Clinton County, MO; She was the daughter of William Todd Livingston, IV and Hannah McKown. She was born abt 1834 in Missouri and died before 1867.

Children of Matthew and Marinda:

Martha Ann, b. 23 Nov 1853 in MO. Married John P. Tyre 12 Dec 1872 in Clinton County, MO; died 2 Mar 1937, Atchison, Clinton County, MO. John Tyre was born Dec. 1851 in MO.

William, b. abt 1856 in Missouri

Hannah, b. abt. Mar 1860 in Missouri.

Matthew next married Ruth Ann Livingston, 16 Jun 1867 in Clinton County, MO. Ruth was born Apr 1849 in De Kalb County, MO and died bef 1900, apparently. She was the daughter of Ira Smith Livingston and Nancy S. Higgins.

So far, I have not learned what happened to Enos Shearer, but I know he was born between 1835 and 1840. I also believe Willis's wife, Sarah, died before 1840, or right around then.

Hi...amongst my ancestors I have SHEARERS from Stronsay amongst others in Orkney. Someone told me once the surname Shearer was nothing to do with shearing or sheep (which go hand in hand!!) but to do with a sheaf of corn!!! Now plse figure that out for me...perhaps the name was originally SHEAFER and they dropped the "F" & used the "R" due to pronunciation.

Did have a chuckle Beatrix. Thanks

Hi John,

I'm not sure I fully understand your question.

The generally accepted history is the "Scots" migrated to Scotland from Ireland in the 1st millenium a.d., displacing the Picts as they spread east. In Caithness (and Orkney and Shetland), there was a later Norse (Viking)influx.

The other area I've been posting about, the Moray Firth coast in Grampian (Banff, Buckie, etc.) was a strongly Pictish area until relatively late. The Norse infuence is less pronounced there; the Vikings raided but didn't settle there (though I believe they captured and held Burghead at one time).

I hope that's useful. My apologies if I've missed the point of your question.

Cheers,

Colin

I've heard "using scissors to address cloth". I hadn't heard the "trimming" angle, but my ancestors (up until my father) were tailors (later clothiers, drapers, outfitters, etc - all built out from the tailoring business). Latterly they were in Buckie, previously in Banff 16 miles away at least as far back as the 1830s. Before that, there was a Robert Shearer in Banff (1657-1718) who was also a tailor, though I haven't proved a direct ancestral link.

The family is also connected to Caithness and I don't know whether any Shearers are still in the clothing business there, but certainly my father's draper's shop often mistakenly got deliveries for a Fred(?) Shearer in Wick, and presumably vice versa!

Cheers,

Colin

On the Banff connection:

There was an earlier family of Shearers in Banff: Robert Shearer, c. 1657 - 25 Oct 1718, tailor. I haven't been able to trace the descendants of any of his children (5 known), but some time prior to 1818 Solomon (my 3xgreat-grandfather) moved from Caithness to Banff. I've no hard evidence Solomon himself was a tailor, but his descendants were for the next 4 generations.

It seems to me that one of the things that would motivate Solomon to move specifically to Banff was a family connection, but like I said, I've found nothing conclusive on that.

Hardly counting as firm evidence, there's a persistent family story that one of our ancestors crossed Culloden the day before the battle (1746). That's on the route someone moving from Banff to Dunnet would take, and the timing would make it Solomon's grandfather (his father, George, was born ~1733 and although I've seen him listed as being "of Dunnet" I've seen no actual record that he was born there).

Cheers,

Colin

I was aware it's a very common name in that part of Caithness but no, I wasn't aware of the Orkney connection - thanks for the pointer. I had a look at the message board and the oldest records I can see there are from the 1790s. Do you know if anyone has determined for sure whether the Orkney Shearers "seeded" Caithness or vice versa?

Hi,
One of my ancestors, Solomon Shearer, was born at Corsback, Dunnet, Caithness 10 Sep 1775. (He moved to Banff, Banffshire, married Helen Raffan, and died there 16 May 1861.)

Solomon's parents were George Shearer (b. ~1733) and Jannet Smith (b. ~1737), both of Dunnet.

If you've come across these individuals, and in particular any information on the parentage of Solomon's father George, I'd be very interested to know. I have a theory that George's father or grandfather moved from Banff to Caithness, but haven't yet been able to find a conclusive link.

Best regards,

Colin Shearer
Reading, UK

I have another, more unusual Shearer/Hipp connection. My ancestor, Henry Shearer, was born 1804 supposedly in Haberg, Bayern, Germany. By 1837 Henry had immigrated to OH. I don't know if family came with him or not.

Henry was a weaver of museum quality goods. In 1860, he had a guest in his home by the name of Sebastian Hipp, who was there as an apprentice. I have always thought there must have been a connection between Sebastian and Henry before they immigrated.

From your post, it's looking to me like this is correct.

BTW, all my Shearers changed their names from Shearer to Sherer in the 1880's.

Karen

I have heard 2 separate, but similar, origins of the name Shearer: "the man who used scissors to trim finished cloth," and "the sheep-shearer." My Shearer ancestors were German, not Scottish. There were both Scottish Shearers and German Shearers living in early Lancaster County, Pa., which complicates research.
I'm just guessing by the details you provided, that you're related to Mathew's brother, James? I did a quick lookup for his family on the 1880 census. Do you know if Samuel Smith, in their household, is related to the Livingstons?

Smith, Samuel MW 20 boarder; hand in harness shop; MO/Germany/Germany

I ask because Mary Smith's father, George Smith (changed from Schmidt) supposedly immigrated from Germany. Mary married William Livingston, they were Marinda and Lucinda's grandparents. Well, maybe only a coincidence, Mary was born about 1780 in VA, so her parents would have come pretty early on from Germany, while Samuel's parents were born in Germany.

Just checking a few things out while I'm thinking about them....

Amy.

Oops, It's probably obvious, but just to correct myself, Lucinda is daughter of William and Hannah McKown LIVINGSTON.

You probably already know this, but a lot of the Shearers/Livingstons/McKowns are buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Don't ask me to get into the McKowns, I didn't even try to figure out that connection...

Amy.

Wow, thanks for replying to my post even though it was years ago! I'm from Mathew's line, through his 2nd wife, Ruth. How are you related? I corresponded with someone related through Martha's (Mathew's sister) line several years ago, and one other person through Mathew's line, but other than that I have never met anyone else researching Willis and Sarah. Good to hear from you!

I don't have anything at all on James, and I believe at the time, once I found Willis was Mathew's father, some details on Enos & Martha, and them listed as orphaned children, I was burnt out and took a long break. Thank you for sending that! At the time, I narrowed down James birth to about 1838-1840; I wonder if Sarah died shortly after childbirth, because she's not listed on the Jun 1840 census.

Do you know anything about the death of Willis and Sarah? I'm sure there must be a story, as they both died within a year of each other leaving their orphaned children to an aunt/uncle. Mathew went to live with another Aunt/uncle (Nancy/George Davis) & Martha married when she was 14. I imagine things were pretty tough for them.

Just a few corrections to your email below:

Here's the marriage certificate info. for Mathew to Marinda. I believe the year of their marriage should be 1853, unless the below is incorrect:

I, Eppe Tillery, a minister of the Gospel, do hereby certify, that on the 19th day of November, 1853, I joined in marriage ENOS SHEARER and LUCINDA LIVINGSTON:

And that on the 22nd day of December, 1853, I joined in marriage MATTHEW SHEARER and MARINDA LIVINGSTON.

Given under my hand this 1st day of March, 1854.

EPPE TILLERY

MEM. The foregoing certificate of marriages was delivered to me for record on the first day of March, A.D. 1854.

WINSLOW TURNER, Record

and here is the Marriage of Enos/Lucinda:

I, Eppe Tillery, a minister of the Gospel, do hereby certify, that on the 19th day of November, 1853, I joined in marriage ENOS SHEARER and LUCINDA LIVINGSTON

Also, RUTH LIVINGSTON is on the 1900 census in Lathrop, Clinton, MO; I think I stopped looking for her after 1900, and don't know whether she is on the 1910:

Ruth A. Shearer, age 51 b. Apr 1849, widowed; Ira, 23 b. May 1877; Alberta, 18 b. Apr 1882; Sylvester, 15 b. Dec 1884; Grover C., 14 b. Feb 1886; Charles, 11 b. Jan 1889. All born in MO. Ruth mother of 9 children, 8 living. Ruth's father born in TN. Mother of children, born in KY. Ruth rents a house, works as a washerwoman. Ira a farm laborer; Sylvester and Grover can read and write.

ENOS SHEARER married Lucinda Livingston as noted above (dtr. of William and Hannah McKown). Lucinda's sister was Marinda whom Mathew Shearer married a month later. Lucinda was born 7 Aug 1838; d. 5 Sep 1870. I don't know if they ever had any children, or if they died between census years, but there aren't any listed on the 1860/70 census. Interestingly, Martha Shearer (Mathew & Enos' sister) married William McKown, son of John & Margaret L. Livingston McKown (Margaret is sister to Ira Smith Livingston)....that makes things sort of tricky, doesn't it? Needless to say, for orphans, they sure made up for lost time by marrying into such a large family. The Livingstons go back to Overton co., TN and it just gets more and more interesting from there.

So glad to look at this family again after so many years. I have fond memories of finding Mathew's parents. What a treat! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments, and again, thank you for the info. on James. I'm more than happy to share what I have, but it looks like you probably have most of that already.

Best Wishes,

Amy.

Thanks, I'll keep you posted.

Really quick, here are some other important dates that you may or may not have already:

WILLIS SHEARER and SARAH VAUGHN:
Marriage: July 06, 1832, Clay County, Missouri

Willis died aft Jun 1840 (census) and before 1 Nov. 1841:

Clay co., MO Deeds; Vol. G, p. 147-148:
"Whereas Eppe Tillery of the county of Clay and State of Missouri was appointed executor of the Estate of Willis Shearer deceased late of said county under and by venture of the last will and testament of said Willis Shearer...
This Indenture made this first day of November Ad Domini one thousand eight hundred and forty one...

Here is another one. In any case, her death was bet. her son James' birth in Dec. 1837 and the 1840 Census:

Vol. E, p, 223 (land Sarah/Willis rec'd. from her father, Enos): "...Willis Shearer and Sally his wife late Sally Vaughn...did on the 12 day of April AD 1837 bargain and sell unto the said complainant Thomas Arnold...that said vendors were the sole heirs of Enos Vaughn lately before said sale deceased...

"...the said Willis Sharer and Sally his wife have died since said conveyance to said complainant leaving four children under the age of twenty-one years to wit the said Matthew, Enos V, Martha and James Shearer..."

Thanks Chris, I have that Willis was also a son of Mathew/Hannah Massie Shearer. Anything you'd like to share on Simon & Willis' siblings is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Amy.

That's great about Enos! I found him on one of the Census' in MO but wasn't sure if it was him because I didn't know whether or not he had remarried, and didn't know where he moved after that.

Thank you again for sharing -- happy to know anything else about Willis or Sarah. I have info. on their parents/siblings, but as I said earlier, when I found they were the parents of their 4 children, I took a long rest from researching that family.
