In the short pace of ten days, three families have been desolated. A father and mother well down the decline of life, bereft, as it were at one stroke, of four children and two grand-children, a young wife and two small children left widowed and fatherless, and a husband in life's early morning robbed of all that made life dear. And now six new made graves on a hitherto unoccupied lot in our beautiful cemetery at Delanti (Stockton) tell the sad tale of suffering and anguish which has fallen upon this hitherto happy and unbroken family. For the ages of the deceased and dates of deaths, the reader is referred to a brief article in a late number of the Advertiser. Perhaps a word of eulogy, even at this late date, may not be out of place or uninteresting to the many friends of the deceased. The death of Miss Helen, second daughter of Hiram and Laura Shedd, would have made a sad inroad to the heart and home had all the others been spared. Tender, loving and affectionate, and of a deeply pious temperament, she won the love of all. In the church of which she was a faithful member, will her presence be long and sadly missed. In the death of George Shedd and his two lovely children, Luna and Gracie, a thrice double bereavement is sustained. An only son and brother, a loving husband and father, and withal a genial friend and companion, his loss will be felt in the community where he resided. Mrs. Emma Phillips, the fourth daughter, was the wife of Mr. Wm. Phillips, living in the western part of the town. Of her it might be said, she came back to the home of her childhood to die. Her unselfish love would not permit her to absent herself from her loved ones in their distress, and, true to the instincts of her better nature, her willing hands ministered to their wants until palsied by the terrible disease which claimed her too as its victim, and smilingly she yielded to the mandate of Him who had taught her to say ?Thy will be done.? And Flora, too, the youngest lamb of the flock, what shall we say of her? Guileless, loving and obedient, the hopes of the parental heart must have centered largely on her. But she too is gone. Gone to a fairer home where no dark night of suffering and sorrow intervenes to dim the light and pleasures of the bright eternal day. The old adage that death loves a shining mark was never more truly exemplified than in these cases. Young, loved and respected by all, with an apparent career of usefulness spread out before them, it is hard for human wisdom to reconcile itself to these mysterious Providences, and nothing but the assurance that God rules in love and doeth all things well can shed a ray of light upon this afflicted household. Let these stricken parents, wife, husband, and two remaining sisters be assured they have the sympathy and respect of this entire community in their hour of darkness, and may He who only can, heal their wounded hearts and be to them more than earthly friends. The funeral services were largely attended last Sunday at the church of the United Brethren, in Pleasant Valley, conducted by Rev. Mr. McIntyre of the U.B. church.

Hello, I am the great granddaughter of Annie Shedd that married Stephen Martin Grissom .I have no real info on either of them. I know that Kizzie was my dad's aunt and I know of some of the Shedds in A.P. TX but I don't know any of them personally. I have seen some family tree info Edna Lee (Stick) Grissom Vance has but would love to have more on the Shedd side since there are double cousins in there.

I believe that the Shedd book is now out of print, but I'd be glad to do look-ups from mine for you. I looked and do not see either one of your grandparents listed in the book. Maybe looking them up in the census records might reveal who his parents were and then they might be listed in the book. Did your grandfather perhaps have siblings named Melvin, Elsie and Miles.
I see the following family in the 1930 census. Looks like it could be them.
Name: Claude W Shedd
Home in 1930: Beaverdam, Oglethorpe, Georgia
Age: 12
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1918
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Clarence
Mother's Name: Nanie
Parents' birthplace: View Image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Clarence Shedd 29
Nanie Shedd 30
Claude W Shedd 12
Elsie M Shedd 10
Melvin Shedd 6
Miles Shedd 3

My g grandfather and my grandmother were born in Athens, Clarke CO, GA so I'll bet there is a connection.
Email me if you need to.

Frances Long Greene
I have a picture of Dora, Lurline, Rose Mae and Pauline, but not sure which one is Dora and which is Lurline. They were in my dad's belongings when he passed away. Julia, his mother, had written the names on the back of them, but no left to right order to the names. I would love to see any Shedd information, I got a lot of mine from the Shedd book and some from grave markers, as well as census records, etc. Do you know if there is a picture of Sallie Holliday?

I am looking for the Shedd/Shed families living in the Beaverdam area during the early 1900's.
In the 1920 Census for Beaverdam, Oglethorpe, Georgia
Dudley G. Shedd is listed. I believe the G. stands for Gilbert
Dudley is living with his wife Blanche and his mother Harriett E. Shedd. Both Dudley and his mother were born in S.C. I believe in the Oconee Section of S.C. if I have the correct family.

If this is the correct family, Gilbert would have the following brothers and sisters: Ella, Ida, Della, Clarence, Henry, Merret, and Hubert. His mother would have been Harriet Elizabeth Thrift Shedd and his father would have been Hiram Thompson Shedd all of Oconee Co., SC

I would love to hear from family members or anyone knowing this family. Thank you. Gail

I have information on your people; the dates don't match exactly, but must be the same. I have Ephraim Littell b.Oct. 22, 1812, Ohio, m. Feb. 28, 1833 to Lucinda Shedd (Aug. 25, 1813- Nov. 26, 1876). They lived in Jennings County Indiana. If you are convinced as I am that these are your people, and tell me which of their children you descend from, I'll send the pertinent descendant/ancestor data I have. Should explain that I'm not a relative, but very involved in the preservation of the NJ Farmstead Museum where the grandfather of the Ephraim in your query grew up. On 18 & 1/2 acres of the farm are the 18th century farmhouse and several later outbuildings. Thanks to the Historical Society and the local government, the Farmstead was saved in the 1970's and the farmhouse and some buildings restored and furnished. Now, all buildings need extensive work, and matching grants are being sought. If you'd like to make a much needed tax deductible donation toward the match, write a check to the Historical Society of Berkeley Heights and mail it to Daniel Palladino, Historical Society President, Town Hall, 29 Park Ave., Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922. I am really excited about your query, and would love to send you pictures of the Farmstead and my Rev. War research on Ephraim the first if you are interested and I can figure out how to send. Let me know.

The farm, now in Berkeley Heights NJ, was Andrew Littell's 18th century home. Your direct ancestor, Ephraim 1, b.1760, was likely born in the old Farmhouse. The Historical Society has furnished a 'borning room' there. I tried without success to attach pictures showing the farmstead & its urgent current needs. Think I got your e-address, so will use it to send the pics of this wonderful farm museum, along with much more Littell, and a little Shedd, data.

Hi, Stephen -

We corresponded before. I sent you some some scanned pictures of the Littell-Lord Farmstead where Ephraim Littell lived as a boy, plus some parent and sibling information for him. Did you get the pictures, etc.? I believe you said you might visit the Farmstead when in NJ on business this fall (or that might have been another correspondent.) If it was you, please note that the Farmstead will be part of Four Centuries in a Weekend in Oct. - the 18th & 19th I think; of course you can visit any time on request.

I have just organized my Ephraim Littell material and sent to PL Savage, and she has mailed me more about his Rev. service records, wife and kids. When I get this, I'll check it with my stuff, correspond again with pls, and send you more.

So I won't have to search, could you please tell me again which of Ephraim's descendants is your direct ancestor?

Re: Shedd family - Middle TN

I just finished reading your message regarding the Shedd family. My cousin and I was discussing Mr. Jack and wondering who Rufus's mother was and I decided to check the message boards. Mr. Jack married my grandmother, Cora Hartley Beard, after she was divorced from my grandfather Richard Beard. Rufus's first wife was Esther Mae Beard, daughter of Cora and Richard Beard. My Aunt Eshter, whom I don't remember, and Rufus had a son named Charles. Charles was married and had a family. He is deceased now. After my aunt passed away, Rufus married Lucy Hartley, who is related to my mother on the Hartley side. Lucy and Rufus had three kids, but I was never around them as they lived in Chicago before moving back to Nashville. Their son, Gus, was killed in an accident on the highway. I only remember one of the daughters name and I will send you her address if you want it. Her name is Brenda Grissom. Lucy is living with her. Just send me an email so I don't have to post her address. Are you from the Nashville area? Hope this helps.

I don't have any info on Molly. It was just a coinsidence that I checked the message boards and found your message. Gus died in June, 1979. This is according to social security records in Ancestry.Com. I have been trying to find Brenda's telephone number to talk to Lucy. She is not in good health and I don't think she can remember well. They have a copy of Mr. Jack's obituary from the Franklin Review Appeal at the archives in the old downtown post office. I can't remember where he is buried.
