Interesting
Thought I would share this with you folks.
I have been able to trace the Sheeler name in Canada to the year 1795 in Montreal. A Constable John Sheeler was arrested for wrongful arrest and battery. (nice fella...) This was an article I found several years ago in the Canada Archives.
Interestingly, there is a later John Sheeler (1840's so I highly doubt it's the same person) who wed a Mary Purdy, these two were subsequently awarded 200 acres of "Crown Waste Land" in the district of Haldimand, for Mary Purdy's father's activities as a Loyalist. (wish I had 200 acres in Haldimand now!!!!) In case you're wondering where Haldimand is, it's in the Niagara region.... This John Sheeler signed the document with an 'X', which, to me would indicate a level of illiteracy. (Not uncommon I'm sure)
Unfortunately, I have yet to find any connection to my family...
But, to all you Sheeler's out there - The Sheeler name has been in 'Canada' since at least the late 1700's. Pretty Canadian eh? :)
