Hi,

I am looking for a living male Sheets descendant of Andrew Sheets and Catherine Mast to join our the Sheets DNA Project.

Andrew is supposedly from Randolph Co., NC, and died 1809 in Miami Co., OH.

The DNA test would be to try to prove or disprove the relationship of Andrew to Martin Sheets, who married Margaret Snyder. Martin died 1816 in Montgomery Co., OH.

If you are, or know anyone who is, a living male Sheets descendant of Andrew and Catherine, and would be interested in joining the project, please let me know.

Thanks.
Paul

Paul Sheats
Administrator
Sheets DNA Project

Email: Paul.Sheats@comcast.net

I think this is a different Phillip Sheets as the one I am looking for information for was married to Catherine Polan before 1848. His brother John and John's wife Mahalia lived with Phillip and Catherine according to the 1850 census of Berne Twp, Fairfield County. Later, John and Mahalia moved to Center Twp in Mercer County, Ohio and at least Catherine and children were to follow soon after. I do not know when Phillip died or which county but it was after the 1860 census and prior to the 1870 census because Catherine was by then married to Edward Kelly. Would you have any information concerning this Phillip and John? Or on the wives?

There is a public member tree at Ancestry.com that suggests that Philip and John were the sons of:

John Sheets, born abt 1800 in Virgina (and)
Lydia Kendner Kantner, born abt 1805 in Pennslvania

However, there are no sources other than census records.

There were Sheetz in Fairfield Co., OH as early as the 1820 census.

1820
Frederick Sheetz, Beme (probably Bern), Fairfield, Ohio
Jacob Sheetz, Beme (probably Bern), Fairfield, Ohio

1830
Adam Sheets, Liberty, Fairfield, Ohio
George Sheets, Rush Creek, Fairfield, Ohio
Jacob Sheets, Hocking, Fairfield, Ohio
John Sheets, Violet, Fairfield, Ohio
Joseph Sheets, Bern, Fairfield, Ohio
Maria Sheets, Bern, Fairfield, Ohio
Mathias Sheets, Liberty, Fairfield, Ohio

1840
Jacob Sheats, Berne, Fairfield, Ohio
John Sheats, Pleasant, Fairfield, Ohio
John Sheats, Berne, Fairfield, Ohio
Joseph Sheats Berne, Fairfield, Ohio
William Sheats Liberty, Fairfield, Ohio
Addam Shootts, Viloet, Fairfield, Ohio

1850 Ohio, Fairfield, Bern

There was a Jacob Sheets (b abt 1796 in VA) and Mary (b abt 1799 in PA) listed with children Frederick (b abt 1823), Diana (b abt 1831), and John (b. abt 1844).

There was a John Sheets (b abt 1800 in VA) and Lydia (b abt 1805 in PA) listed with children Susan (b abt 1835), and Nancy (b abt 1847).

I'm wondering if Jacob and John were brothers. Both born in VA and both married to wives born in PA.

Paul
Mary Jane took a lot of digging because there are several Mary Jane Fast's in the area.

Our Mary Jane Sheets apparently married one of the Fasts' but I don't know who, only that he must have died shortly afterward. She is found living with her mother Catherine and Edward Kelly and using the name Mary Jane Fast in the 1870 census. Later she married Benjamin Cook and they had a son. The son died at the age of 2 1/2 and is buried in Neptune Cemetary. Benjamin must have also died but I can find no record or grave. Mary Jane is found again with Catherine and Edward in the 1880 census using the name Mary Jane Cook. Later that year she married Edward's son William Kelly and they had two children, Elizabeth, and Edward. This Edward is my grandfather. The older Edward, and William both died in 1889, one of typhus and one of TB. William's sister Ann also died young, I think of tb around the same time period. I have the death records of all three of them. There is another woman from Neptune area who is also related through the Sheets daughter Lydia Sheets Stauffer.
I am in Van Wert. If you can email me privately, we can talk more. It is this name at yahoo.

I did not know Mary Jane had children. I knew she married but then, not real sure of all her info because I found two Mary Jane's.
Would you share some information on Mary Jane? I am from Willie's family. Or I guess you would say John the son of Philip. He lived in Neptune most of his life, and I live not far from Neptune myself.

Phillip is also my great great grandfather. His daughter Mary Jane is my great grandmother.

I have census records for him in 1850 and 1860 in Fairfield County. In 1870 his wife Catherine was married to Edward Kelly and they were living in Neptune, Center Twp, Mercer County, OH. His brother John and wife Mahalia were living in Neptune in 1860. You can find them living with Phillip in 1850 still in Fairfield County.

This leaves the 10 year period between 1860 and 1870 a mystery. I don't know if he came to Neptune as well, or if he died in Fairfield County. I tend to believe he followed John and came to Neptune and then died. Otherwise, I don't know that Catherine would have been there to marry Edward Kelly. You will find Catherine and Edward together with all their unmarried children in the 1880 census.

That is all I have on Phillip. I am looking for his parents as well as for Catherine's parents. It is a story in our family that Edward's first wife Elizabeth Poling is Catherine's sister. I have not been able to find Elizabeth's parents either.

Phillip Sheets and wife Catherine Polan Sheets with daughter Mary Jane in the 1850 census for Fairfield County. Brother John Sheets with wife Mahalia (Fast?) Sheets lived with them at this time. They all eventually moved to Neptune in Center Twp, Mercer County, OH. You will find John and Mahalia there in the 1860 census. By 1870 Phillip had died and Catherine had remarried Edward Kelly, still in Neptune, Mercer County, OH. I have much more if this is your family. I am looking for Phillip and John's parents.

Mari: Thank you very much for the info on Monroe A. Sheets. It is most helpful and gives me some things to follow up on. I'm pretty sure this is the correct person as he was living in Portland on the 1920 census. The marriage listed in 1910 must be a second marriage as he is listed in 1900 in Oregon with his daughter Edith and divorced. In 1910 he is listed with son Edmon (age 8)and widowed and in 1920 he is listed with son Edwin (age 18)and married. None of the census I have found him in show him with a wife. Once again a great big THANK YOU !!!!!

Re: Louis A. Sheets

This is not my family. However, I thought I would pass this information along in the event it can be of some help.

... Louis and Katherine were in Ross, Wood, OH at the time of the 1910 census. It indicates that they had been married less than a year.

... Katherine and James were living in Toledo with her brother at the time of the 1920 census. It indicates that Katherine was widowed. I do not know if this record of Louis as dead is correct. The Ohio death database does not list his death, but this database begins in 1913.

... I found a record at familysearch.org that indicates Louis and Katherine were married in Lucas, OH on October 26, 1909. It also says that Louis was born in Perrysburg, Wood, OH, and that he was the son of Henry Sheets and Margaret Cornelius.

... Marriage records for Wood, OH, indicate Henry Sheets and Magdalina Cornelius were married June 15, 1868. The 1870 census records list Henry (b. 1844) and Magdaline (b. 1850) in Perrysburg. I could not find them in 1880, but that was only after a cursory look.

Again, I am not sure if this is helpful, so feel free to do with it as you please.

Re: Information on Martin Sheets?

I believe that your Martin Sheets was the one who died in Ashe Co. NC in 1810. He is related to some in the Sheets DNA project. YOu might check the Sheets' in Montgomery Co. OH. They often mix up your Martin with a prominent Martin there in Randolph Twp. that married a Mary Hoover. He was a son of an Andrew Sheets and had a brother named Jacob. Their father, Andrew left a will and Martin and Jacob were the executors of that will. I have been trying to gain information on another Martin Sheets who was taken to Randolph Twp. Montgomery Co. OH in 1808 by his son David. This Martin is also some times mixed up with your Martin and your Martin's death year is attached to him. He actually died in OH in 1816, but again they are all confused in many family trees. I am participating in the Sheets DNA project and basically have been eliminated from your Martin's line.

Sheets DNA Project - Lastest News

Hi all Sheets researchers,

It's been a long time since I've sent an update to this message board on our project. We now have 42 members in the Sheets DNA Project! That is 10 more since my last update in December of 2008. My goal is to have 50 members by the Spring of next year.

We recently established our 6th genetic lineage, of which both members have early Sheets roots in Maryland. One of these member's paper trail goes back to the Henry H. Sheets who came from Maryland and settled in Franklin Co., Kentucky. Henry H. Sheets was thought to have been born about 1740 in Maryland.

If you have not yet been DNA tested, our project could use your help, by participating. To test, you must be a MALE with the surname Sheets (or similar spelling).

We also have our first non-US born member to join the project. This individual's earliest ancestor came from near Germany, and moved on to Australia. The current spelling is Schuetz.

If you are interested in getting tested, please contact me. Prices are cheeper now than when I last sent an update, and I may be able to offer you a discount.

Thanks.
Paul

Paul Sheats
Administrator
Sheets DNA Project
Email: paul.sheats@comcast.net
Re: Caty Sheets cave

Lawrence
Caty Ann began having an affair with Absolum Bower, who was married. Her father, Andrew Sheets, being a very religious man did not approve of the affair. When she refused to end it, Andrew disowned her. As a result, Caty Ann began living in a 24'x30' cave, located on the banks of Roan Creek, about 6 miles outside of Jefferson, NC. Caty had at least 5 children and possibly as many as 9 children while living in the cave. It is not known how long Caty lived in the cave, but some sources have her living there for as long as 18-20 years. Eventually, she had a house built on an area just above the cave. The house is no longer standing. One local area descendant states that, according to her parents and grandparents, the cave was actually quite nice inside and not as stark and barren as one might imagine.
