Well! I did not have this Census material in in my files on this Arthur! Thank you.

The reimert link was not good.
http://reimert.org/genealogy/database/d257.htm
Do you have any other link?

Did Capt. Arthur have a son Arthur? And I suppose the John Sheffield listed is Col. John, born 1799?

This may not be news to anyone in this direct family, but I did not know the name Shuffield was ever connected to Arthur's family, nor that they had lived in Bedford, TN.
Do you have any other information on this family before they got to Chapel Hill?

Thank you.
Will be more than happy to assist you. The Duplin family is my family, but I don't do much past the 1800's. Please send me the person's you think to be the brothers. Males are much easier to trace. I do have one Elizabeth born about 1800 in the Amos Sheffield family, but could be one of several families who go to Fla.

kathytork1@cableone.net
It is easier for me to get email than come to these sites.
Sorry to take so long to get back to you on your question.

Wm Sheffield born in Duplin and son of John and Nancy Turner married Rebecca Lee and moved after John's death in 1790 with his step-mother Elizabeth Grady Sheffield and all of his younger siblings to Pulaski County. None of this group was ever in Bulloch Co.

Through DNA it is almost proof positive that William who is married to Mary Abbot is the son of William/Sarah of Duplin who is a brother to John of Duplin.

This older William married to Sarah also has younger sons John and Amos.

These two sons are the ones most confused with William of Bullochs sons John and Austin! So, it turns out that the sons John and Amos who lived in Duplin and married the Brooks sisters, are cousins to John and Austin (no Amos on the end) of Bulloch!

Kathy 2009

DNA Tip #1 and DNA testing discount extended

Family Tree DNA has extended their discount for a combined Y37 + Basic mtDNA test for another week. Test kits must be ordered by June 30th and paid for by July 7th to qualify.

Go to the link below for more information on ordering a kit.

http://www.familytreedna.com/group-join.aspx?Group=Sheffield...

With your test results, you will receive a Haplogroup prediction and a generic Human Migration map. Most of the Sheffield results fall into two haplogroups. The I1 group is the “Viking” group. The R1b1b2 group is the largest western European group and is called the Atlantic Modal Group. More than 60% of Europe falls in this group.

On the migration map you can see that the I1 and R1b groups arrived at England from two different migration paths. Any common ancestor between the two groups would have to have been very, very far in the past. Tools provided by FTDNA to estimate the common ancestor time show a 1% probability at 5000 years of having a common ancestor.

The I1 group is the descendants of William of Northampton, John of Moore, and John of Duplin, plus several others which hit brick walls before 1800. The R1b1b2 group is the current Virginia families so far, but might be every other immigrant’s line except the I1 group.

The advantage to be gained from this knowledge is that each group could eliminate the other in their research. They have no common ancestors since the beginning of written history. That is what Y-DNA testing has proven. Of course, when we are all helping each other, not being family doesn’t prevent us from contributing.

If you have previously tested and need assistance with your results, please join the project as well and I can help. Remember, DNA can’t answer all your questions, but it can help to eliminate false leads and help narrow your research.
DNA Tip #2 - The PLUS side of DNA testing, explained

The question is “Can I help Sheffield Surname Genealogy by taking the Y-DNA test?” If you are or know a male with the Sheffield surname, the answer is probably YES.

So far, Y-DNA testing has revealed two major groups. The well known families of Sheffields from the 1700’s in North Carolina counties Northampton, Moore and Duplin form one group. I call these families “Group I” from their genetic Haplogroup, I1. The other major group seems to originate with Virginia families, but really they should be thought of as all of the English Sheffield families NOT in Group I. This second group I call “Group R” from their genetic Haplogroup, R1b1b2. Group R is the most frequent in Western Europe and is known as the Atlantic Modal Haplogroup, AMH.

Two minor groups were also found. One was for a family from Germany whose name was anglicized to Sheffiel. The other is of unknown origin, perhaps they are immigrants from Ireland (just a guess).

In the current market, Y-DNA tests come in three sizes. The basic test covers 12 segments of junk DNA from the Y chromosome. The mid-range test covers 37 segments and the deluxe test covers 67 segments.

When the first Sheffield DNA project was started it was soon discovered that the Northampton/Duplin/Moore families were in Group I. That project quickly built up a collection of matching results from mostly Y-12 tests. There were a few Y-37 results also. In all but one result, the first 12 segments were all alike for the Group I members. Currently there are over twenty results with perfect matching Y-12 Group I DNA.

While the Y-12 test is good for placing one in either of the Groups, It takes the more refined Y-37 test to establish a close relationship when the match is not perfect. When all results are the same for a Y-12 test, then a more extensive test with more markers is needed for separating lines from one another. For Group I, the Y-12 test will likely not reveal the line you are from. Of six Y-37 results, 2 have DNA changes. Using the Y-37 test will better expose what changes have occurred in each line.

The first Sheffield project also collected a few Group R results, but none of them had perfect 12 segment matches.

I will tell you that the two groups share no common ancestors in any genealogical significant time. These two groups developed in different parts of Europe at different times in the past. The most recent time they could have merged, scientists believe, was around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum in Europe, 12,000 years or more ago.

It is not true that only perfect matches are important to genealogy. Depending on the test used, a 1-off match for a Y-12 test to 4-off for a Y-37 test, the results can predict a family connection between two people over 8-12 generations.

A mutation is the event of an error in copying the DNA that a parent gives a child. This mutation, or change in the DNA pattern of junk DNA, then becomes the DNA of the child and passes to the descendents of the child. By recognizing and documenting the different patterns of these junk DNA segments, a genetic genealogist can predict which family lines support a living person’s y-DNA result. It also can eliminate some lines from a possible connection.

The DNA of ancestors is predicted from the DNA of two descendents. If the two don’t match then a third descendent is needed to break the difference. When a change is found, initially it is not known when the change happened. It could be at any generation between the living person and the most ancient paternal ancestor.

For Y-37 testing to be worthwhile, two people first must have a reasonable closeness from their Y-DNA. For some of the Group R lines, this closeness does not exist yet. For a few it does. I can recommend when I think Y-37 testing is worthwhile for those people.

To summarize, I feel all potential Group I members should order only Y-37 tests. If you are in Group R or if you don’t know where you are going to fit, then a Y-12 test would be less expensive to begin with. Later you can decide whether to upgrade or not. Be aware however that an initial Y-37 test costs less than doing the Y-12 test and then an upgrade.

Lewis was born in 1821 in St. Clair County, Alabama. I cannot find the parents of my Lewis...but I thought there might be a connection. Nathan or Adam one had a saloon in Linden. They married here in Cass County. If you are interested in them, let me know.

I have a DNA match with Arthur Shuffield in Duplin County, North Carolina, but I cannot make a connection.

So sorry, just picked this up. What information do you have on a Flora Sheffield and a William)more likely a Samuel Aikin(picked him up on a early census) from Thomas Co., GA. Have documentation that a Samuel Akins signed Flora Sheffield's portion of the will of her father, West Sheffield-this Samuel Aikin was from Thomas Co. GA, but Flora(Floey's portion was signed in Hamilton Co., FL.) I believe Flora Sheffield Akins son was a Sherrod Sheffield Akins, my gg grandfather. I can't find anything on Flora and her "husband". The Akins cemetery in Hamilton Co. FL no longer exists-am researching that. Sherrod Sheffield Akins was first married to an Elizabeth Kemp, had 10 children with her, 2 by his second wife, and one stepson. I have a ton on documenatation on West Sheffield, Flora remains a mystery. Thank you, Nancy Newsom Lande. You can e-mail me at nelande@yahoo.com. Tried to go through Kemp family information-made no headway.
A

I just sent some information on the Internet, and it repeated itself, I have no idea why. Flora(Floey) Sheffield(loosely spelled) was my gggg grandmother, d. of West Sheffield and Susannah Sherrod. I am trying to figure out if Flora(mother of Sherrod Sheffield Akins) was m. to a William Akin, or a Samuel Akin from Wayne Co. GA. I can't get any definitive information on her.

I am not sure Flora Adkins(Akins, Akin, Aikens) was married to a William, but maybe a Samuel. She was my gggg grandmother, but cannot find any info on her. She was the daughter of a West Sheffield(loosely spelled), and a Susannah Sherrod. Have records on her, a Samuel Akin signed papers on her to receive her inheritance from her father, West Shefield. Have her birth record and death record in Hamilton Co. Fl, cemetery no longer exists. I cannot find any definitive records on her.
