Prominent Automobile and Farm Implement Dealer Had Been Ill
Only Since Sunday - Heart Disease Given as Cause of Death.

Adames, March 27, - Ora L. Shelmadine, 71, prominent business man and former supervisor of the town of Lorraine, died a his home about 7 a.m. today following an illness since Sunday. Death was attributed to heart disease. Mr. Shelmadine, who was active in the Methodist Episcopal church at Lorraine, taught his Sunday school class last Sunday. He had not complained of poor health but Sunday evening he was taken suddenly ill. He had been confined to his bed since. Besides being a leading business man and active church worker, Mr. Shelmadine was well known in Jefferson county politics, having been supervisor 20 years. His business for years comprised the selling of farming implements and lumber and during the past several years he sold automobiles, in partnership with R.W. Moore. The firm name was Shelmadine-Moore company of Adams. Ora L. Shelmadine was born in the town of Lorraine, Feb. 25, 1863, son of Jerome L. and Betsy Middleton Shelmadine. He spent his entire life in Lorraine. Mr. Shelmadine was one of the largest land owners in Jefferson county, having many acres left him by his father, the late Jerome L. Shelmadine. After completing his schooling, Mr. Shelmadine taught for 18 years in and around Lorraine. He then entered business, opening a store at his home, dealing in farm implements and equipment as well as dealing in lumber. About 1916 he obtained the agency for Buick and Overland cars, locating in Adams. In January, 1922, he took Ray W. Moore in as partner. They also sold farm supplies in Adams, having bought out the business of Martin J. Maxwell. He was a director of the Farmers National Bank, Adams, for years, and became a director of the Citizens & Farmers Trust company at the time of the combination. HE HELD various offices in the Methodist Episcopal church at Lorraine for over 50 years, and was superintendent of the Sunday school. Like his father he was a strong Prohibitionist. Mr. Shelmadine married Miss Jennie Moore of Lorraine, Aug.1, 1895. She also had taught school before her marriage. Mrs. Shelmadine died May 6, 1931. From 1898 through 1921 Mr. Shelmadine served continuously as supervisor from the town of Lorraine. Mr Shelmadine leaves no survivors other than nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held from the Lorraine Methodist Episcopal church on Friday at 2 p.m., with Rev. Paul Roy, pastor officiating. Burial will be Rural cemetery, Adams.
