From the “History of Columbia County, Wisconsin – 1880”, there is a biographical sketch under the ‘Town of Columbus’ for John R. Decker, proprietor and publisher of the Columbus Republican, was born in Chautauqua Co, NY in 1842; his father, Stephen Decker, was a native of Troy, NY, but his mother, Sylvania Richmond, was born in Connecticut; at the age of 2 ½ years, he with his parents, removed to Erie Co, NY, where his father followed farming till 1855, when they came as emigrants to Wisconsin, and located at Waupun, Fond du Lac Co, where his father now resides; Mr Decker was educated in the public schools of Waupun, and in that city in 1859, he entered upon his apprenticeship at the printer’s trade; a year later, he went to the city of Fond du Lac, where for four years he was employed in the job office of which Edward Beeson was proprietor; in 1867, he returned to Waupun, purchased the Waupun Times, and was its editor for one year; he came to Columbus in 1868, established a printing office where he made a specialty of job work, and where he has since edited the Columbus Republican; Mr Decker was elected Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors in 1877; was re-elected in 1878 and 1879; he was married in 1866 to Miss Harriet, daughter of Abram and Lucy Shelmadine, of Waupun, who died in 1869, leaving two children – Minnie J and Ray – the latter of who is now deceased; he was again married, in 1870, to Miss Susan Hawxhurs, of Columbus, who died three years after; his third marriage was to Miss Emma L. Holms, of Portage City, Wis., in 1875; Mrs Decker is a member of the Episcopal Church; Mr D is a member of the I.O.O.F., P.of H., and also of the Masonic Fraternity.

Isaac / Henry Shelmandine - Shoharie County, NY

I am trying to help a girlfriend join DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) through Richard Shelmandine, who has been proven to DAR as a Patriot.

She descends from Richard through his son, Henry, and from Henry's son, Isaac. We have all the necessary documentation for her, EXCEPT something that would prove that Isaac is a son of Henry.

National DAR does not accept genealogies. Does anyone have anything that might help prove Isaac as a son of Henry? Did Henry leave a will? Are there any land records that might name Isaac as a son of Henry? Did Henry or Isaac have an obit that might have named other family members? Or did any of Isaac's siblings have an obit that might name Isaac as a brother and Henry as the father?

If there is a published history of the county (or town of Jefferson where Henry and Isaac lived) National DAR will accept published histories of towns or counties as proof, but not genealogies.

I have found "Bio Review, Vol XXXIII - Schoharie, Schenectady and Greene Counties NY" but that is not helpful in proving the lineage between Isaac and Henry. It does prove that Henry is a son of Richard.

I have also found the "History of Jefferson" written by Bailey, but the only mention of Isaac and Henry is that they are in lists of people who paid to help the cemetery, so that only proves they probably lived in or around Jefferson.

Any and all help GREATLY appreciated. I will be happy to reimburse for time and out of pocket expenses.

Please feel free to contact me privately.
Brenda-Hare@Cedar-Rapids.Net

I am decended from Richard Lewis Shelmadine who is buried near Shelmadine Springs, PA. I have visited the cemetery. We are English from Manchester, England according to my research. My family line goes back to Richard's son Benjamin (1784-1850). My grandfather George Edwin(1882-1939) was born in Cass Co., Mi and his wife, my grandmother, Lara lucrettia Green(1886-1928), was first generation Irish in the US. We are Roman Catholic because my grandmother made my grandfather promise to raise all the children in the church. They had 13 children. My dad, Patrick Riley Shelmadine (1913-1991), was a locomotive engineer for the Nickel Plate RR, Fort Wayne IN Division. I was born in Chicago and spent my youth between the Ft. Wayne area and Hammond, IN. I now live in VA.. Hope this helps.

My email has changed to Dunboe41@aol.com; please note!
Looking paarticularly for info on Eathel Shelmadine (male), married Mary Brown; believe they lived (or he, at least, was born) in PA, but lived in VA during the Civil War. They had at least two sons, one being Wm. Dwight, m. Mary Ellen Nolin; they migrated to NE in later years, tho' may have also lived in
IN and MI, before settling finally in NE. Eathel & Mary would be my GGparents. Any info welcome--many thanks!!

First of all, please note my new current email address, from now on--many thanks!! Appreciate your reply and will keep in touch. It appears that Woolsy may have been a brother of Bornt Shelmadine, who migrated to PA; later, after the death of the mother, Caterina (Kniskern), the father, Richard, in old age, moved from New York to join Bornt in PA; perhaps others did, too; have you checked for Woolsey in any PA records? Best of luck!

My mother is a Shelmadine from northern Indiana. They were only one of a few Shelmadine families in the entire state, I think. Her people were originally from the east coast but no one seems to know where.
They think the name is either French or English.
Hope this helps

Shelmadine/Nolan/O'Neill Family Search

Hi! I'm looking for earlier information on the family of my great-grandfather, William D. Shelmadine, born Cumberland CO., Pennsylvania, approx. 16-20 years prior to the battle of Gettysburg. While born in PA, it is told he and at least one brother, a
twin, were raised by the parents (father's
name possible Dwight) in virginia, in some
part of the Shenandoah Valley. They were
Irish, and had strong feelings and traditions
about that. He was a Civil War veteran, and
went to California after the war. On the way back to Virginia, he instead met married
Mary Ellen O'Neill in Indiana. They home-
steaded to Gage Co., Ne., returned to join
her family, who had moved to Ohio, 4 yrs.
later, then after another 4 yrs. homesteaded
to Polk Co., Nebraska. Relatives in Eastern
Western Nebraska, vicinity of Macon, MO,
later in NY (late Clara, their granddaughter). Would be interested in any
possible connections. Please email me at
oneillclan@altavista.com Thanks much!

I have a partial book on the Shelmandine family & Woolsey is mentioned in it. He was born in 1820 & died in 1903. His wives were Matilda Miranda Vaughn and Gertrude Mattice. His parents were Heinrich (Henry) Shelmandine B.1777 d.185? and Polly Purdy b. 1778 d.?. Who in turn was a son of Richard Shelmandine b. 1753 d. 1826 and Catharina Kniskern b. 1748 d. 1824.

This is all of the information I have at this moment. I am trying to get more & if I do I will pass it along to you.

He came to the US & lived in Schoharie CO, NY and is buried in Crawford CO, PA.

If any of this information is familiar to you please contact me.

Josephine

Marie, my maiden name was Shelmandine. In fact I have Shelmandine ancestors on both sides of my family. My mother's paternal great grandmother's maiden name was Shelmandine.

My mother and father were about 11th or 12th cousins.

Shelmandine is English I believe. My family came from Schoharie County in New York.

I am looking for information on a William E. Shelmadine. He lived in Wabash County, Indiana in the mid to late 1800's. He married an Alice Lukens in 1890 in Wabash County Indiana and later married an Angeline I think. I would appreciate any information about his line that anyone can give. I believe his family came from Pensylvania and Ohio.
