Fort Hood, Texas — Peter B. Shene, 36, a captain in the U.S. Army, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, while on field assignment at Fort Irwin, Calif.

He was born in Plattsburgh on July 8, 1964, son of William and Virginia (Frost) Shene.

Peter was a 1982 graduate of Mount Assumption Institute in Plattsburgh. He attended SUNY Plattsburgh, North Country Community College and SUNY Cortland.

Peter enlisted in the U.S. Army where he attended various service schools including OCS. He received his bachelor's degree from Upper Iowa University and was promoted to the rank of captain. In November of 2000 he assumed command of Alpha Tank Company of the First Battalion, Eighth Cavalry at Fort Hood, Texas.

Peter was an athlete who played basketball in high school and college and enjoyed sports with his children. He especially enjoyed rooting for the New York Knicks and the New York Giants. He was an accomplished musician who enjoyed singing and playing his guitar for his family and friends. He was devoted to his family and a natural leader. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Peter is survived by his wife, the former Cynthia Thompson; three children, Andrea (12), William (10), and Stephanie (9), all of Killeen, Texas; his parents, William and Virginia (Frost) Shene of Plattsburgh; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Melissa Shene of Duluth, Minn., and Michael and Suzanne Shene of Louisville, Ky.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Kelly Shene of Metuchen, N.J., and Laurie and Perry Marvin of Deltona, Fla.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be Sunday, Feb. 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. from the Brown Funeral Home in Plattsburgh. A Mass of Christian burial along with full military honors will be celebrated Monday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m. from St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Cumberland Head.

Burial will be later in the year in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Plattsburgh.

In lieu of flowers, a scholarship trust fund has been established for his children. Contributions can be made in the name of Capt. Peter B. Shene to: Adjutant of 1-8 CAV at HQ 1-8 CAV, Fort Hood, TX 76544.
