Ann, Anna, or Annie Shepard

Annie Shepard was born about 1862 and according to the 1880 federal census was married at 18 to Thomas Graham in Vernon, Jennings, Indiana. Listed as Annie B. Graham, I've looked for Annie B. Shepard in the 1870 federal census to find an Annie B. Shepard in Greene County, Indiana, but age did not seem to match. My great grandmother Lucretia Graham was Thomas and Annie's daughter. Looking for more positive proof.

Hello Dixie, My Dad, who is now 76 years old is trying to trace his ancestry to pass on to all the Shepards in Texas. Our Family, He's writng an auto biography. He's been trying to trace someone by the name of Franklin Shepard, I believe. It seems that my Grandfather's family came from North Carolina. Do you know if your Franklin Shepard ever went to Texas? Our Franklin lived here, but left when my grandpa was real young. My Grandfather was Jesse Almon Shepard, my Grandmother Bessie Mae Hutchins. My Grandparents had 11 children, all but one lived. My Dad's name is Jesse Earl Shepard Sr., he resides in Texas. My aunts and uncles all live in Texas as well. Clarance C., Bobby Joe, John Henry(deceased),Jerry Frank, Charles, Jay, Tommy Lennon, Joy (daughter) Jan Kay (daughter) David Hugh (deceased). They all have children and some of their children have children. If anything rings a bell, let me know. It would make my dad very happy.
Thanks, Jesse Shepard Burnett

He is 95 and doesn't remember much of his childhood. My grandmother was Mary Shepard b. sometime around 1890. Believe she was adopted. No known maiden name. Grandfather was named Frank or Franklin Shepard - no info available on him. Appreciate the info you passed on to me. Can you share info on you and your family. I might be able to find a connection in the pile of misc. data I have.

Updated facts on the Jonathan Shepard I am looking for:

b: abt 1826 in INDIANA because the 1880 census that I found on his wife Nancy Ann Barnhart with some of the children say the children's father was born in Indiana.
Jonothan is not in that census, so he is either deceased or they divorced?

His last child, by Nancy was William born in 1876 +-1 in Indiana.

I know Nancy Ann Barnhart was b: 1833 +-1

1870 census says Jonothan was born in Ohio
1860 says he was born in Indiana.
Jonathan and Nancy Barnhart were married in Connersville, Indiana on 22 Aug 1852. The had 8 children all born in Indiana:
1. Adeline b. 1853
2. John Greeley b. 1856 d. 31 Jul 1936 Laurel, Indiana
3. Douglas Stephen b. 1859
4. Thomas M b. Jul 1861
5. Elta b. 1865
6. Marshal b. 1871
7. Harry b. 1873
8. William b. 1876

Given that the last child was born in 1876 and the 1880 census says that Nancy was a widow, Jonathan had to have died between 1875 and 9 Jun 1880 census date.

Please can anyone tell me who and where Jonathan came from.
Thanks

Hello Cousins,
I am hoping to find some proof of the family connection between Ebenezer Rice and Esther Shepard who married c. 1796 probably in Otsego County NY.

I need some help to prove that Ebenezer's wife Esther was the same Esther Shepard who was born to Henry and Esther (Bundy) Shepard in Canterbury CT and baptized in Coventry CT in 1779.

The tombstone for the wife of Ebenezer Shepard says: "Esther Rice, wife of Ebenezer Rice, born April 22, 1778, Died June 12, 1848." This birthdate is given in "The Shepard Families of New England" as the birthdate for Esther Shepard, daughter of Henry and Esther (Bundy) Shepard. But I need to find some other proof that these were the same two ladies.

Are there any Rice family bibles out there from their many descendants (Lemaster, Bundy, Cline, Clines, Cooperider, Law, McCaslin, Earwood, Stansbury, Baker, Condrey, Bell, Vest.) How about wills, land records, anything to tie the Rice and Shepard families?

Thanks so much.

I am looking for information on my 4th-great grandparents: Joseph Shepard, born in 1807 (perhaps in Vermont?) and Juliann (Maynard) Shepard born in 1815. I believe Juliann was born in Jamaica, Vermont. I know the family lived in Jamaica, VT when their daughter (my 3rd great-grandmother) Flora was born in 1854. Any family information would be appreciated. I also saw an old posting about an 1852 family bible that recorded genealogical information on this family but the e-mail was invalid. Any information on its whereabouts?

Grandaddy Shepard (Arlie) lived with Mom in his last years of life before going into a nursing home in Tallahassee where he died.

I am trying to find pictures of Grandaddy's wife Laura who is my mother's mother - she died when mother was about three. If you know of any information please pass along to me.

Thanks.....

Was she the actual daughter of William C. or was she a daughter-in-law? She is listed as widowed in this census and on Sarah's death certificate states that a Jess W. Shepard was her father. I found this family in the Kansas State Census of 1905 as well. Any information would be helpful because I am at a brick wall.

I'm a few years late, sorry. My husband descends from John Shepard Sr. (1777-1856) who settled in Genesee County in 1816 and had seven sons and seven dauthters. One of his sons was your ancestor James Shepard (1804-1877) and another was my husband's g-g-grandfather John Shepard Jr (1811-1892). Your great grandfather David Shepard sold his family homestead in Bethany, NY to my husband's great grandfather Charles Shepard in in 1888. David then moved to Batavia where he lived until his death in 1923. I have his obituary. I also have a copy of James and Amanda Shepard's cemetery stones. Do you know if any of David's descendents still live in Genesee County?

Looking for information regarding the family of Sarah Shepard b. ca 1700. She married Cornelius Whitney b. 1680 of Groton, Middlesex, MA. The birth of their 8 children are recorded in Groton MA vital records. Date of marriage would be prior to 17 Apr 1715 (birth of eldest child)

I can't find birth or marriage records for Sarah in Groton - so she probably came from a neighboring community as they settled in Groton until they moved on to CT sometime after 1707.

Bill:

I am hoping you can help me. I am looking for information on Samuel Shepard 1759-1836 who was born at Epping, N.H., who I have seen reported as a son of Joseph and Anne (née Sanborn) Shepard. Samuel Shepard married Sarah Giles of Nottingham, N.H. in 1785. They had seven children between 1788 and 1805: John, Samuel, Sally, Hannah, Joseph, David, Eliza Jane. I have information on descendants of their son Joseph, born in 1794. I believe Joseph Shepard is a descendant of Rev. Thomas Shepard 1605-1649 of Cambridge, Mass.

I found this in the book "History of the Shepard Family" on HeritageQuest.

I think this Ashbel was the father to your "Ashbil" Shepard.

History of the Shepard family
East Hardwick, Vt: The author, 1894, 16 pgs.

The first settlement in the town of Greensboro, Vt., was in the spring of 1789. In that spring there came from Newbury (then called Coos), Messrs. Ashbel and Aaron Shepard, with their families, consisting of five persons, viz.: Ashbel Shepard and wife, Aaron Shepard, wife and one child. In coming from Cabot the women had to proceed on foot, and all the furniture for the two families was drawn on three hand sleds. They settled in a block house on the Hazen Road (built by Gen. Hazen for a fort). This road was commenced by Gen. Bailey in 1776, and continued fifty miles farther north, through the towns of Peacham, Cabot, Walden, Hardwick, Greensboro, Craftsbury, Albany, Lowell, and Westfield, by Gen. Hazen, in 1779. Ashbel Shepard settled on what is known as the “Rand farm,” on the west side of the lake, and between H. S. Talman’s on the south and the stone house on the north. In August, the same year, Aaron Shepard and his family returned to Newbury, leaving his brother, Ashbel and wife the only inhabitants of the town of Greensboro, and Mr. Nathan Cutler and family, in Mindon (now Craftsbury), six miles distant, the only white inhabitants of the county of Orleans. During this lonely winter Mr. Shepard drew all his grain from Newbury, more than fifty miles distant, sixteen of which he drew it on a hand sled. He also drew the hay to winter his cow from Black River meadow in Craftsbury, some three or four miles, over snow four feet deep; and at that time his nearest neighbor on the south was Mr. Benj. Webster, in Cabot, some fifteen miles distant. During this season of loneliness, the two families in Greensboro and Mindon were cheered by the arrival, not of the cars, nor of the stage coach, nor yet of chaise, wagon or sleigh, but by a hand sled drawn by three cheery young men, and bearing upon it a precious burden – a beautiful, healthy young girl of not quite fourteen years. Her name was Mary Gerold. She was a daughter [5] of Mrs. Cutler, of Mindon. The year before, she was left at Sturbridge, Mass., to attend school. In January, 1790, she was brought by Col. Joseph Scott as far as Ryegate, Vt. Having been detained some two weeks at Ryegate at the house of Esquire Page, she was conveyed to the house of Dea. Elkins in Peacham. After another delay of two weeks she was enabled to advance a little farther. Aaron Robinson, of Bennington, brought her to the house of Esquire Levensworth, in Dewey’s Gore, which is now parts of Danville and Peacham. There she was subject to another ten days’ delay, when she came on horseback to the house of Leftenant Lyford, on Cabot Plain. The next morning she proceeded on her way, as before described, towards Mindon, drawn by Jesse Levensworth, Josiah Elkins and Obed Cutler, a son of her step-father. The party reached the house of Mr. Shepard, the only house between Cabot and Mindon, about noon. It hardly need be said that Mrs. Shepard, in the absence of her husband after a hand sled load of hay, gave them a hearty welcome, and as good a dinner as circumstances would allow.
Page 5:
Cheered and refreshed, the party proceeded on their way, and just as the sun was going down they reached the house of the parents of Obed Cutler and Mary Gerold. For months before this, no female had been seen by Mrs. Shepard or Mrs. Cutler. Who can express the joy of that mother after such a season of loneliness, at such an arrival? Not only the arrival of a fellow creature of her own sex, but of an affectionate daughter. Mr. Stone, in his sermon in 1854, says, “She is even now among us, one of us and known by our children and youth by the endearing title of Grandma’am Stanley.” I can well remember Grandma’am Stanley. But she has long since passed away. I have not been able to get the date of her death.
But to return. About the middle of March, 1790, Mrs. Cutler, prompted by a sense of duty as well as desire, visited her neighbor, Mrs. Shepard, making her trip in her [6] best carriage, the hand sled, and remained with her some little time.
During this visit, on the 25th of March, 1790, Mrs. Shepard became the joyful mother of the first white child born in Greensboro, and probably in the present limits of Orleans County, viz.: William Scott Shepard. I once bought a stove of him since I kept house. The proprietors of the town voted him one hundred acres of land.
William Scott Shepard moved to Wisconsin a good many years since, and has probably long since passed away.
But to return. About this time ( March 1790,) Mr. Aaron Shepard and his family, who had left town in August before, returned, and with them Mr. Horace Shepard and family, who began on what is known as the “Ring” farm, lying on the road leading from the Stone house, known as the Williams farm, to Mr. Cook’s. Thus there were three families in town instead of one – all Shepards. At or near the coming of these families came also – some of the way, it is said, on foot, and some of the way on a hand sled – Miss Susan Shepard, a sister of the three brothers, to reside in the family of Ashbel Shepard as helper and nurse. She afterwards married Col. Levi Stevens. The same year came Timothy Stanley, and built a saw-mill at the outlet of the lake.
I have both an Ira SHEPARD (one "R") and an Ira SHEPPARD (two "Rs") from Cattaraugus County, NY, in my line between the years of 1812 and 1855. I think the discrepency in the letter "P" is due to mostly illiterate Census takers who wrote what they thought was the correct spelling without stopping to ask if it was correct. From NY, my SHEPPARDS settled in Minnesota, then later in Nebraska. Let me know if this might be of some help to you.

Records show that John Corydon Shepard was born in Massachusetts in 1834. I'd like to find out where in Massachusetts he was born and who his parents were.

He's enumerated in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Sandisfield, Berkshire, Massachusetts. In 1850, he's reported as Corodon Shepard, age 16, living with Lyman and Elizabeth Boardman. In 1860, he's shown as John C Shepard, age 26, living with his wife Ann Jane (Bevins) and their daughter.

Elizabeth Boardman (from the 1850 census) is the sister of a Corydon Shepard. Corydon Shepard was born ca 1815. Corydon's son gave an affadavit in the application for Civil War disability pension of my John Corydon. So, I'm assuming that this Corydon is related to my John Corydon.

Thank you for any help you can give!
I am responding because I am also looking for info re: a William Shepard who was in the Civil War. Not from NY, my William (no middle name) Shepard was from Wabash, Indiana, and he died in July, 1862 of war injuries in an Evansville, Indiana hospital. The name is so similar and they are both Civil War vets, so if you happen to come across the one I am looking for, please pass me the word, and I will do the same for you.

Re: THOMAS J. SHEPARD & CAROLINE RINDGE M11-2-1827 (SPRINGFIELD,MA)

Unfortunately Mr. Crumb I cannot add specifics to your query other than to say it appears they had one son and one daughter. But I have no names or DOBs. My interest in Thomas comes as a result of his becoming an insepctor at the US Armory in Springfield, Mass, well into his 50s! I'm interested in more biographical information on him as I have accoutrements inspected by Shepard, and want to include a sidebar on him in a book I am writing on the subject. If you receive this I thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Fred Gaede
