"On November 24, 2005. VIOLET DAWN HAMPTON SHEPHERD was born March 22, 1923 in Watauga County, NC, daughter of Jeremiah Russell Hampton and Fannie Lee Herman Hampton. She was educated in Boone, NC schools and Cecil's Business School in Asheville. On May 1, 1943, she married Samuel Claude Shepherd who preceded her in death in March, 2004. During World War II, Dawn and Sam moved to Alexandria, VA, where they spent the rest of their lives. From 1945 to 1951, she worked for the American Red Cross in Alexandria, and from 1951 to 1962 she worked as a Federal Civil Servant for the U.S. Department of the Army, at Fort Belvoir, VA. An active lay woman at Groveton Baptist Church, she served as Church Secretary and as a leader in the Women's Missionary Union and in Sunday school programs, especially those devoted to high school and college students.
Survivors include a daughter, Cora Lee Hevenor, and a son, Samuel Claude Shepherd II. Dawn is also survived by two sisters, Beulah (Boots) Hampton Sutherland and Verdola Hampton Cook; and two brothers, J.R. Hampton and Wendell Hampton; another of Dawn's sisters, Mabel (Beth) E. Triivett preceded her in death in April 2002. Dawn was an avid Geneologist and became a member-at-large of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Relatives and friends may call at JEFFERSON FUNERAL CHAPEL, 5755 Castlewellan Dr., Alexandria, on Friday, December 2 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Groveton Baptist Church, 6511 Richmond Hwy., Alexandria, VA on Saturday, Decmber 3, at 11 a.m. Interment Mt. Comfort Cemetery."
