Dr. William Gordon Shepherd was my grandfather. He was born in Almonte, Ontario, Canada in 1884. He attended public schools in Ontario, then the University of Toronto - Faculty of Medicine, graduating in 1908. On a copy of a card, maintained by the American Medical Assoc., from the Deceased Physicians database of the National Genealogy Society, he's listed as being in Herring Neck, NS in 1908, then Lynn, MA in 1909, (my father was born in Lynn in 1913), Ellington, CT in 1916 and, finally, Hazardville, CT in 1919. Hazardville is where he settled and maintained his practice for the remainder of his life, dying there in 1960. I am aware that he was in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and that at some point was in China for a war, but do not know when or which.

Hi Glyn. I see from other trees that several people have used the Wymeswold connection and I felt very much on my own, but I am convinced that it is a marriage with Ann Lawrence and not Ann Chamberlain. The gravestone in Foremark Churchyard, where they are buried was in great condition when I saw it some years ago. It could be Sarah in Loughborough and the Elizabeth would be her daughter allowing for the 1841 age "rounding off". They had a Elizabeth Mary in 1811. I'm still unsure of the Slater Shepherd connection but I looked into it considerably and Newton I think is Newton Solney. They seemed to use similar given names to our Shepherds and Newton Solney is very close to Ticknall/Derby Hills (Joseph b 1770) and Smisby were he married Sarah. My stumbling block is Vincent Shepherd who was born c1805 in Ibstock. He married Mary Ann Lemmon and moved to Market Bosworth- but I cannot find the marriage. Joseph and Sarah have a gap in their children c1805 and I feel he belongs there. The main reasons I think he is mine is the given names are similar and I have a whole line of Vincents from Edwin and Lettice Fradsham down. (Vincent b 1843 is my gr. grandfather. Regards Ann

Your previous email caused me to look at Joseph again - and it was quite obvious in the cold light of day that Joseph b 1770 just did not fit. Neither did Elizabeth - who appeared to be a twin sister.

As Joseph Senior appeared to have died in 1776 it was also not possible for at least 2 of the 3 children that I had attributed to him;p they being Ann born 1777, Slater born 1794 and Thomas 1795.

Most of my research is from the internet, and as you say - not always reliable. Wymeswold Parish records are on line. It shows a Joseph Shepparde as dying before 3 Feb 1776, and Ann baptised on 28 Jun 1777, and Ann is described as the daughter of Joseph and Ann Sheppard. So another quandary - except I have Joseph Sheppard b 1698 married to Elizabeth Hickling, and he died Jan 1776. His son Joseph Sheppard b 1726 married to Ann Chamberlain I have as also dying in Jan 1776 - Therefore either a co incidence or the most obvious one - a duplication. I believe this to be a duplication.

1787 sees the burial of an Ann Sheppard, as does 1802 - but as these records give no ages of the individual it is impossible to say when Mother or daughter died.

I have picked up a lot of the information from other trees, which are obviously compounding the mistake - so my action has been to remove Joseph Sheppard b 1770, and his sister, as well as the last 2 children.

So the outcome of all this - mea culpa - I believe that your Joseph Sheppard is unrelated directly to the Wymeswold Sheppards that I have - I suspect that there will a link - cousins etc., because it is unlikely that your Joseph would just happen to come to Wymeswold.

I am pleased that the changes to my tree have not affected my line of the Shepherd family, so for me - no real damage - but good to get the facts staight.

Have you come across David Stanley. Mark Kirk or Myrna Swanger - they are all Shepherd descendants. David Stanley lives in Wymeswold/Ibstock area.

Hi. your link looks promising. I would love to see what evidence have you found so far. The link to Wymsewold and Kings Norton just didn't see to add up.
The only facts I have are that Joseph is burried in Ibstock with Sarah. I could let you have a photo of the gravestone if you like. He died 15 Feb 1829 age 59 making his birth 1770.
Sarah died 3 Dec 1844 age 65. From a record with Leicestershire Historical society she was living in Loughborough at time of death.
In 1841 census there was a Sarah Shepherd in Loughborough living with Elizabeth Shepherd aged 25.
Do you have any mention to a Slater Shepherd. This is a link I picked up years ago. He seemed to arrive in Ibstock around the same time as Joseph. On a census his place of birth is Newton which may be Newton Nethercote which is close to where he was living, "odd house". He also married in Derbyshire.
Sorry for going on but this has been a stumbling block for me for a long time.
I live in Ibstock so any local information I can help with just ask, Glyn.

You may have a point - looking at my record for Joseph senior who I have as marrying Ann Chamberlain in April 1772 - in line with the Wymeswold Parish Register - they have twins in 1770 - which is unlikely as yet unmarried and he has 3 children after his death in 1776 - so I think I have become corrupted somewhere.

Many thanks for the info

I am related to this line of Shepherds and my research points to a Joseph Shepherd b1770 in Derby Hills. He married Sarah Cheatle in Smisby. His father (to my mind) was Joseph Shepherd who married an Ann Lawrence in Ticknall 1768. I have seen their grave in Foremark churchyard. I don't think there is a connection with the Wymeswold Shepherds (not at that point anyway) This info was gathered mainly from the records office in Matlock.

William Jennings SHEPHERD was born abt 1903 and died 3 Apr 1956. He was buried in the Maysville Presbyterian Church cemetery in Buckingham County. He was the son of Peter J. SHEPHERD & Alice "Allie" TURNS. His obit states his wife was Carolyn HODGES. However it has been reported that he married Esther STIMPSON. And there was an Esther STIMPSON b abt 1901 living with her parents, Thomas & Martha STIMPSON shown in the 1920 census as living near the SHEPHERD family. Was he married twice?
Hi!
I was hoping that someone reading these boards may be able to help me unlock this riddle.

I am looking for any information which may help me learn more about or add parents/etc to the following family:
William Fisher b. ABT 1829, likely in Shoreditch London
d. ABT 1876 (as per children's admission records to Barnardo's)
Married to Mary Ann Shepherd b.ABT 1830, possibly in Ipswich
They married 22 August (or April) 1852 at St Philips Church, Bethnal Green, London

Children: Elizabeth Fisher Abt 1858
Caroline Fisher Abt 1861
William Fisher ABT 1862
George Fisher ABT 1867--went to Canada w/Barnardo's
Edward Fisher ABT 1870---went to Canada w/Barnardo's

I have found the family on the 1871 Census in Bromley St Leonard as well as Mary Ann on the 1881 Census. However, I cannot find the family on the 1861 census.

As per William and Mary Ann's marriage certificate, William's father was named Edward Fisher and Mary Ann's father was named William Sheppard.

If you can help shed light on this family, I would truly appreciate it!

Kind Regards,
Jeni Fisher

Looking for any and all information on David Shepherd, who along with his siblings (Ellen, Robert & Jessie), sailed on the Britannia from Scotland to New York, then Canada in 1869. His father, also David, sailed from Scotland to Canada in 1868 on the Caledonia.

David (the son) married Sarah Jane Forgie in 1881 in Lanark Co., Almonte, Canada. Sarah's great-grandfather, Gilbert Forgie, sailed from Scotland to Canada in 1820 on the Commerce.

I have loads of info on Shepherd, Forgie, Gemmill, Cowie, Campbell, Neilson, but have come to a standstill as far as marriages and deaths. Any help would be appreciated and returned.

Looking for any information on my gt gt gt grandfather Francis Graham Shepherd born appx 1814 in Scotland. Married a Southwark lass Sarah Gaddes and had at least 4 children from 1836- 1844. I already have details of census, his death certificate and his children's birth certificates all born in London. It is the Scottish link I am after. Did he come down to London on his own? Did he come as a young child with his family? I cannot narrow down the area from which he came, all census's just state Scotland. Thank you.

I am related to this line of Shepherds and my research points to a Joseph Shepherd b1770 in Derby Hills. He married Sarah Cheatle in Smisby. His father (to my mind) was Joseph Sheherd who married an Ann Lawrence in Ticknall 1768. I have seen their grave in Foremark churchyard. I don't think there is a connection with the Wymeswold Shepherds (not at that point anyway) This info was gathered mainly from the records office in Matlock.

I am searching the Shepherd/Smith relationship. Henry James Shepherd was a witness at the marriage of Georgina Amelia Shepherd (his sister) to Henry Walter Smith in 1888. There were two stepsons in this marriage (1891 census):Alfred Shepherd and James Shepherd who I believe later used the name James Smith and was my Grandfather, and later died in the WW1.
My father was an orphan and his orphanage details listed his nearest relative to be a Mrs Taylor (nee Lucy Shepherd) who I believe to be the Mary Ann Lucy Shepherd the sister of your Henry James.
Any background information you may have would be appreciated.
Regards Mike Smith

Hello,
I have been through all 1065 threads and haven't found anything relating to Shepherd's from Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

Unaware if the absolute origin of these Shepherds was Shrewsbury but here are the names of the Shepherds I know to be born and bred in Shropshire:

Joseph Shepherd, born 19.3.1918, died 25.10.1992 married Emily (Maureen) Jenks born 15.10.1923 died 24.10.2002. He served in WWII.

His children are Antony Ingram, Karen, and Terence Michael

Joseph's sister is Beatrice Shepherd, has emigrated to Mauritius

Also in our family was Ingram, a nephew/cousin of Joseph. Ingram seems to run through our family alot.

Our history seems quite sparse so if you have any connections to these names or maybe parents of Joseph and Beatrice please get in touch.

John Shepherd (or Shepard) of Miami, Montgomery County, Ohio

Seeking information, especially an obituary, regarding John Shepherd of Miami, Montgomery County, Ohio. I have found him in the Federal census records for 1860, 1870 and 1880.
John was born in New Jersey about 1812. I am trying to determine whether or not there is a family connection.

I have a newspaper clipping regarding a Charlotte Shepard Adams who, in 1883, went from Canadice, Ontario County, New York to Ohio to visit her only living brother. Unfortunately the article does not mention the brother's name or where in Ohio. The John mentioned above fits, just trying to prove connection. Charlotte's parents were Zenas and Margaret Shepherd and she had five brothers, David, Bradley, Simon, William and John, and two sisters, Anne and Jane. Any help is greatly appreciated.
shepherd / marsh of sheffield

my ggg grandparents were Thomas Shepherd born c1784 and Hannah Mrash born 1787. They lived in Shrewsbury Road, Sheffield. Thomas was a 'merchant and manufacturer' - Possibly the 'shepherd' part of 'Marshes and Shepherd'. I have not had any success in tracing back further. Does this family ring a bell with anyone?
