Matthew Shearer is as far back as any of us can go until it can be determined if any parish registers still exist in Armagh from around his time. If so we may---I repeat MAY be able to find more IF he is listed. But only the gentry were recorded faithfully in those during that time. If our Shearer's were like their descendants...it's doubtful.

Sheldon,
This is WAY after your post - but I've been working on the Sherer family (my greatgrandfather was Samual's brother) and I have a lot of information. I'm somewhat lacking on Sam's side and I'd love to talk. John Scherer jhscherer@comcast.net (732) 530-3969

I have been researching this family for years and would love to compare notes.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Ann Kirkpatrick b.1821 who married Elisha Sherer. Elizabeth is the daughter of Joseph H. Kirkpatrick whose parents were John Kirkpatrick and Elizabeth Craig.

I would love to compare notes on this line and further my Craig research also. All I know about Elizabeth Craig is that her father may have been named George and she was said to have been born in Chester District, SC in or about 1750.

Any help from there would be great and I will gladly help you with the Sherer side. Contact me directly at: <a href="http://www.bootsgrandma@yahoo.com" target="_blank">www.bootsgrandma@yahoo.com
Hi!

Boy did you step on a hornet's nest!!!

I have been researching this family for years and would love to compare notes.

My husband is descended from Elizabeth Ann b.1821 who married Elisha Sherer.

I recommend the following items of research also:

AMERICAN KIRKPATRICK FAMILY 1754-1972 by D.M. Kirkpatrick 2817 N. Clarence, Wichita, KS 67204 (Manuscript found in the Heritage Room of the Huntsville Public Library, Huntsville, AL. A Xerox copy is in my possession.)

CAROLINA SHEARER-SHERERS AND OTHERS compiled by Iva LaRou Sherer c.1978. (Copy found at the Jasper-Walker County-Public Library, Jasper, AL.)

Both are excellent sources of data and are quite accurate in their data.

Two of the Kirkpatrick-Sherer daughters are buried in New Prospect Cemetery in Jasper (Elizabeth & Harriet). The other two (Jennet Rosannah & Jane) are buried in Old City Cemetery in downtown Jasper. The other two Kirkpatrick daughters (Mary & Margaret) I do not have record of their burial places.

Their parents Joseph & Elizabeth Rainey Kirkpatrick are buried in Bullock Creek Presbyterian Cem, Near York, SC.

I have more. Write soon. Would very much like to compare our findings on the family of John W. SHERER and his wife, Rebecca GALLAGHER. Am hopeful that you might have information on their daughter, Fannie J., b 1884, White Co., AR, who alledgedly married J. A. DONNELL. Try as I have, have not had any luck whatsoever in being able to verify this marriage to date.

TTYL

Craig

omb@ponyexpress.net

CRAIG Team # 8 - Team Leader

"Always Looking for Cousins!"

Sherrah/Sherer marriages of Coosa Co., AL

I am researching the Gaylor family of Coosa/Elmore Co., AL

If anyone can supply any info on the following marriages, please e-mail me at: NKCorum@aol.com

George W. Gaylor married 23 Dec 1858 Coosa Co, AL, Permelia Jane Sherrah. Both George and Jane Gaylor appear in the 1860 Coosa Co., AL., census. A Jane Galer with one child named Kate appear in the 1870 Elmore Co., AL census, living next to James and Burrel Shearer. I can not locate this family after the 1870 census. Would love to know what happened to this Gaylor child.

Mary Ann Gaylor married 22 NOV 1866 Coosa Co., AL., William Sherer. This marriage record is very hard to read, but I believe it to be Sherer. I can't locate this family after the marriage.

Thanks

Ann Corum
NKCorum@aol.com

I appreciate your knowledge however, I do know how, when, and why they made the Virginia/New York connection. The information is correct. What I need is verification on the actual marriages. William and Mary Journal has some of the information but you are not allowed to copy without permission of the contributor and there is no way to contact the contributor. Ancestry dot com also has some of the info. but its not a image of the documents. I need the images. Also I have some old pictures of these indivudals if anyone is related I would be happy to send copies via e-mail.

I need some assistance in completing a genealogy project for my high school English class. My great-great-grandfather Walter Sherer was born esle where but moved to York, South Carolina around 1920. I am not sure of the years. Where and for what length of time he lived in those places and others is not known. He was married or going with at the time a woman name Osie May. I don't know if I spelled it right or not. This is a brick wall that I must break through before I can continue with that line of may family. I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me.

Frances Sherer was living in Morristown, TN in 1959. I'm assuming that because she is listed in her step-father's obituary as Mrs. Frances Sherer that Richard had died by then or that Richard and Frances had divorced.
Does anyone have an idea who Richard Sherer might have been?

I don't know about the book, but Amelia County is in Virginia, not Pennsylvania. You can find a list of Pennsylvania counties at http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S__States/Pennsylvania/Count...

There were literally dozens of different Sherer lines during the 18th century, and a lot of earlier genealogists seem to have borrowed from one line to fill out another. The likelihood of a member of a New York Sherer family coming into contact with a family from Virginia was extemely remote, unless they were cousins. Also, you should know that there were Scottish Sherers and Swiss-German Sherers and German Sherers. It's hard to keep them all separate.

Good luck.
Richard Aurand Sherer (from one of the Mennonite Sherer lines)

Have you tried HeritageQuest's PERSI index? You can access it through many public libraries. Until the end of this month, it's also available online through the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania (www.genpa.org). Once you find an article in PERSI, you usually can order a photocopy.
BYU has an enormous collection of digitized family history publications, fully searchable online at http://www.lib.byu.edu/fhc/. Here's an article about it: http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2005/11/byu_f...
Also, check out a site called Mid-Atlantic Archives (http://www.midatlanticarchives.com/). They're adding digitized material every week.
Finally, check out books.google.com. They're digitizing books in libraries around the world. Just a quick search for the name Sherer brought up 15,200 pages.
Good luck.
Richard

The spelling of names was often phonetic, or based on what the census-taker (or other public official) believed it should be. Consistent, exact spelling of names did not become important until the late 1870s, when the first telephone directories were published.
When I reviewed the Orphans Court records for my great great grandfather, Christian Shearer, I found the name spelled Sherer, Sheerer and Shearer -- often all three in the same document. His son, Joseph, was a Shearer at birth and a Sherer at death. Joseph's brother, Jacob, was a Shearer throughout his life.
The passenger records for the original immigrant in my line show the name as Schärer, but it was often written as Shearer, Sharer and Sherrer in public records in the 1740s and 1750s -- the result of Anglo-Saxon officials spelling the German-Swiss name like its Scottish sound-alike name.
The moral is, don't get hung up on the spelling, especially in early records.
Good luck with your research!
Richard Aurand Sherer

John,
I don't know if your ancestors were Scottish or German; both groups were common in Pennsylvania in the 1700s, and both language groups included a name that was pronounced "Sherer." Many German immigrants were fluent in their native language, but less so in English, while most of the official documents were in English. So, a German who could read the Gutenberg Bible would have floundered badly with the King James Version, and he would have been at a complete loss when it came to understanding a deed or a court record.
The use of German persisted among immigrants and their children for generations. I've found obituary notices from the beginning of the 20th century that included a line that said, "Services were in the German language," or something similar. It wasn't until the U.S. got involved in World War I that the use of German in this country subsided. Even today, in parts of Pennsylvania, I believe Amish and Mennonite children learn both English and German in school. So, it wasn't that education wasn't common in the 18th and 19th centuries, but that many people were educated in a language other than English.
Richard
