My Father's Family

Hello,

My name is Elizabeth and my father's name was John Raymond Sherley. For years I wondered where my family tree started and because of the destinstion of the spelling in my last name I thought it would be easy to find. However, I found that it was not an easy search until I came across this website.

My father was born in (i believe) owensboro Kentucky. I was raised in Oldham County and would love to determine our, if any relationship.

Family lore has always had it that Prudence was dis-owned by her family for marrying a gentile. Little is known regarding her ancestry, other than her maiden name and that she was Jewish.

Winneford Johnston was married to James Shirley. they settled and reared their family in Pike County, Troy, Alabama. Her parents died when she was an infant, and she was supposedly reared by an Aunt, Trinity Faircloth. Winneford and James Shirley were my Great, great, great grandparents.

I have pictures of Sallie, her brothers, including Uncle Buck & Burton, her father, that I will share. I am reading about Belle Starr right now & see that we're surely related somehow. My grandmother told me she had heard that. I do not know exactly how we are connected, other than Buck. Hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Tom, I'm your cousin Cindy from California. My grandma was your dad's sister, Lottie Lois Sherley/Shirley (Mallon). My mom, Sherley Mae Davis (Bietz), was Lottie's daughter. I'm told I look like Lottie and she was my favorite! A few years before she passed on she said that she had heard we were related to Belle Starr (Shirley). I asked my "Uncle Buck" Keith (actually cousin) if he'd ever heard that and he hadn't. I figured since they've all passed on except Buck, that I should try to find out for my family's sake. If you have any info on the family, please send it to me. I know that Buck still owns the old family homestead outside of Stigler, OK. I'm going to be talking to him soon about that since Belle Starr is buried somewhere around the Eufuala/Stigler area. Please email me when you can! Take Care,

SHERLEY MARY ELIZABETH August 18, 1920 to January 9, 2004 Mary Elizabeth Sherley, 83, of El Cajon, passed away on January 9, 2004, of natural causes. Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband Grady Sherley and her son David Allen Bridwell. Mary will be missed by her family and friends and those whose life she touched. She is survived by her sons, Randy (Gloria) Bridwell, Robert (Elaine) Bridwell, daughter-in-law Ruth Rae Bridwell, four stepchildren, twenty grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. George Washington Sherley and Matilda Ruby were George's parents and Sarah Jane's in-laws. Do not know where they came from though my mother said that her ancesters came here from Germany and that their name before coming here was pronounced Sherli and when they came here to the U S it was changed to Sherley.

Do you know if your James was married a second time or maybe even a third time? The birthdates are close enough that it COULD be the same one and the fact that my James' first child wasn't born until 1839 (he was born in 1804) makes me wonder if he wasn't married once before. Thanks, Barbara

Hello Sharon...
My name is Thomas Burton Sherley. My father was Thomas Alonzo Sherley (known as Alonzo, Lonnie, and T.A.), son of Taylor Buck Sherley known as Buck. I don't have a lot of info regarding my ancestry on my father's side. I was excited to see the photograph of Burton and his sons. I have the same photo and I had the names but did I didn't know which names went with which person. I didn't realize that Burton (my ggfather) had a second wife. I would be extremely grateful for any information that you find regarding my Sherley ancestry. I did find Oscar Sherley listed as "Osker" (22 years old) in the 1910 Census for Oklahoma, Adair county, Wauhillau township. This census entry shows Burton living with Oscar in 1910. It also shows that Burton (52 years old in 1910) was born in Missouri and that his father was born in Tennessee and that his mother was born in N. Carolina.

Burton Sherley had 7 children: Jay Hugh Sherley, Miley Sherley, Sallie Sherley, Oscar Sherley, Buck Sherley, Parse Sherley, Wade Sherley that I know of. It appears he was married to Elizabeth Reed who died in the late 1800's. This is in & around Wise County & Parker County Texas in a town called Cottondale. I would like more information of Burton & Elizabeth & who his 2nd wife was. These are my maternal great grandparents. Thanks.

Good to hear from you & hope we can connect some of the different things we each know & come up with somewhat of a whole story regarding Burton. Burton' s first wife was Elizabeth Reed. Does that ring a bell with you? I can trace her back to the late 1500's ... & have a book just sent to me about the Reeds. Quite a find.

He has 1 daughter born between 1790-1800
4 sons: 1 born between 1794-1800
1 born between 1798-1803
2 born between 1800-1810

I believe that 3 other girls being married at this time - Elizabeth, Ann and Mary - were possibly her sisters.
