Sherratt family

I seem to belong to a lonely branch of the Sherratt family, there are other groups but my group seems to be coal miners from the Ford Green area of Norton-le-moors. As far as I can see there were very few male descendents and this branch of the family is now extinct. The last male, William Sherratt, purchased Ford Green Hall in the 1930's and this is now a museum. William fathered 5 girls, but I believe his half brother John (Jack) Sherratt (Scarlett) had a son called Joseph who died in about 1970.

I am researching the Sherratt family tree for a friend. His grandfather Thomas Sherratt (born at Loppington 30th Aug 1842) married Elizabeth Hughes nee Wycherley (born at Wem 1834)marriage took place at Loppington, date not known. They had two sons, William and Richard Sherratt and Elizabeth was a widow when she married Thomas Sherratt and already had two sons, George and Thomas Hughes, and one daughter Fanny Hughes.
If this is connected with your family, please get back to me at anne.newcombe@tiscali.co.uk - thank you

Dear Mr Sherrott I see from your message board that your late father Roger was 57 years old in 2000 the same as myself. I was at school with a Roger Sherrott and his brother Beverley in Ealing in Ealing until 1958. They were living in a motherless childrens home with several other freinds Geoffrey,Peter and Terry Dennison, Ronnie Hine,David Ingham,Alan Gomm etc and I have often wondered how they got on with their lives. It would be very interesting if your father was that same Roger?
Regards
Melvyn Buck

Well, I was finally able to find the correct Edward Mitchel I believe. He was born on September 30, 1887 in New York City and died in November 1970 in Flushing. It would have made him 29 years old in 1916 which matches Marguerite's birth certificate. He worked with the New York Stock Exchange for awhile. His name has also been spelled with the common spelling of Mitchell. I guess it could go either way. Hopefully, I can get beyond these two and go further back in the ancestry. Thanks.

Alta Sherrott (Mitchel)

I am trying to find out the parents of Alta Sherrott, who was born on April 28, 1889 in the United States. She had a daughter born on October 28, 1916 (died April 16, 1984) named Marguerite Alta Mitchel (last name spelled that way on the birth certificate), the father being Edward Mitchel of New York State...possibly from Manhattan where Marguerite was born. Edward Mitchel was born in either 1886 or 1887, as he was 29 years old when Marguerite was born. Alta died on December 4, 1978 in Lake Worth, Florida. She was schizophrenic and gave up her daughter for adoption, eventually taken in by Frances Wright (1896-1984). Marguerite (my grandmother) and her mother never got along, so she didn't talk much about her. She did mention that her family came over from Wales. I'm not sure if Alta is her first or middle name, but I am assuming it's her first name. Anyways, I was hoping that someone could help me out. Thanks :0)

Ralph

I better you never though it would take so long to reply to your message.

I had an Uncle, William Henry Sherratt, who was born in c 1912 and died in the 1960s. Where did your Wm live?

Re the Sherratt name, there seems to be more than one theory:
- one said that:
The Sherratt Name
Surname Variations: Sherard, Sherrart, Sherrat, Shirrard, Sherrat, Sherritt, Sherat, Skerett.
The family name "Sherratt" is said to have been descended from the Saxons of England. Originally on the south east coast. The first recorded name of "Sherratt" appears in Cheshire before 1066. By the 15th century they had branched to Staffordshire.
- whereas the Dictionary of English and Welsh surnames says that Sherard, Sharrard and Sherratt are probably corruption of the name, Sherwood. The earliest recorded will is of a Wm Sherratt of Moss Side Manchester in 1588
- another theory I've seen is that it originated as Sherwood in Scotland with the first Sherratt moving down to Cheshire in the 16c
Take your pick?

Where are your Sherratts from? My earliest Sherratts were from Leek Staffs, they then moved to Ipstones Staffs then Swannington Leics and then ended up in Hucknell then Mansfield Notts.

I hope this is of interest to you.

Best wishes

Alison
(My rootsweb database is alikay103)
I am researching my ancestors the Sherratts of Ardwick/Gorton Manchester. Joseph Sherratt was born Chapel en le Frith ( close to Macclesfield ) around 1821. He moved to Manchester where he married Mart Ann Townsend at Manchester Cathedral in 1845. They had four children - three daughters and a son - my grandfather Joseph born 1857. I would be interested in any further info on the Sherratts of Macclesfield as Joseph snr may well have come from that family.please note the name was always spelt Sherratt until my grandfather who spelt it Sharratt.
Ron Sharratt

Hi Geoff Hope you are still viewing these forums.

I found a William Sherratt [Sherrett] married to Lydia [Lidia] Steel - August 8, 1774. They had a son, Obadiah Sherratt August 27, 1775 in Barrow, Shropshire. Would you have any idea if this family moved to Burslem and/or if this Obadiah Sherratt is the "famous" Master Potter?

Obadiah went on to marry Ann Davenport who had a son William and a daughter Lydia which sounds very possible that he'd be William's son.

Any idea?
Thanks
Wendy SHERRAT Hogan
Ontario, Canada
I am looking for info on Charles and his brother, Stephen, Sherratt. Charles was born in 1844 in Staffordshire, England. Stephen is a few years younger. Charles lived in Ohio, then moved to Colorado. Stephen and his family came to Colorado (Lafayette).

Charles only had one child, Ellen (my ggrandmother) so I would like to contact any of Stephen's children.

There may have been another brother, John who I believe was married to a woman named Annie.

Thank you,

We have some records of our ancestors who came from Staffordshire to the US in the mid 1800s. I seem to remember reading that the spelling of our branch was changed from Sherratt by one of the ancestors because of a family disagreement - the details of which I have no knowledge.
If you are still interested, I will try to find what I can and exchance information with you.

Hi Gloria
The information i have is a bit limited.
Mary R Sherratt's father (John A) looks to have moved around quite a bit with his job as a bank messenger.
According to the 1881 Census he was born in Macclesfield, his wife Rebecca was from Brompton, Middlesex. Their children were born in various parts of the country.
William James - Pimlico, London
Mary R - Westminster, London
John W - London, Tower of
Joe F - Heaton Mersey, Lancs
Annie & Sarah - Ardwick, Lancs

I'm not sure what happened to all the family thereafter but i do know William James ( my gggrandfather) married & moved and is to be found on the Oxspring (Barnsley area) 1891 Census.
I seem to remember seeing references to other Sherratts in Barnsley areas. It is possible the whole family moved to the Barnsley but its equally possible my Mary married & stayed in Lancashire
.At the time i did not have the above information & was concentrating on the Pimlico area.

I will probably in due course recheck the 1891 Barnsley Census

I

I

Elizabeth Sherrat is my Great Grandmother on my maternal side. Her second husband Neil Shirley is my Great Grandfather.
I have not managed to progress this line, but I have her marriage certificate which lists her parents. The 1881 & 1891 census (Anderston, Glasgow) gives her birthplace as being Spain. From her age on the marriage certificate (aged 22 in 1867) that would be about 1845.

Ant information on the Sherrat line, or her siblings would be most welcome.

Tom McEwan

My ancestors are the Sherratts from the Ardwick area of Manchester Lancashire. My Great Grandfather was Joseph William Sherratt (born in neighbouring Gorton in 1857) and christened at Manchester Cathedral. His parents were Joseph and Mary Anne ( nee Townsend ). Their second son George William ( born 1884 ) was my Grandfather - who, for some reason started to spell the name Sharratt. He married Margaret Ellen Robinson In 1906.
Heaton Moor is about five miles from Ardwick.
Hope this is of help to you in your research and we might be able to help each other.
Ron Sharratt.
