Phillip Sherrill

In 1778, Phillip Sherrill is on the Washington County, NC tax list. Martha Sherrill enters a land grant for 100 acres that borders to land of Phillip Sherrill. In 1779, he again pays taxes in Washington County, NC for 100 acres of land. On a 1782 tax list Martha Sherrill pays tax on 100 acres on the south side of the Nolachucky River. In 1783, Phillip pays taxes on 200 acres in Greene County, TN. In 1784 he is a witness for a deed in Greene County, TN. Washington County, NC is the area that becomes Greene County, TN. Who is this Phillip? Who is Martha? What happens to him after 1784? Are these Phillip and Martha who are later in Greenville District, SC where Phillip Sherrill dies and leaves a will in 1802?

Charles Irby Sherrill I, II, III, IV

I'm searching for information on my father's family. He was the third in the line of Charles Irby Sherrill's, born in September in 1930 in New York. He had a brother, and possibly a sister or aunt named Dolores, who worked for IBM. His mother's name was Isabel. The only record is the 1930 Census record of the time, but I can't find anything else on the previous Sherrills.

Thank you in advance to anyone who has more information on the Charles Irby Sherrills.

Regards,
Aspen Sherrill

I probably can help you to subscribe.

I liked you desertation about Bill Sherrill and Wanda Clark;s books. Samuel was born in 1725. My grandmother was a Sherrill, but I have never heard of some of the other names mentioned.

A Phillip Sherrill was in Washington County, TN with Samuel Sherrill Jr, his brother. Phillip lived on Nolichucky River and was in the Revolutionary War with Samuel Sherrill.

John Ashe of Banner Elk, NC sent family group records and other materials to me in 1986. His sources regarding the family of Samuel Sherrill include Samuel's will in Sevier Fam Hist. Land Grants.
John Ashe notes: At Jackson's Bridge, Greene Co TN f/Catherine J Sevier; f/"Notable Sou. Families" by Armstrong; by A W Putnam, son-in-law of Catherine Sherrill Seviere (sic) f/Samuel Sherrill Will, Greene Co, TN I (JRA) have copies.
"His home was called Daisy Fields. He was a constable."

This is not my direct line, so I strongly advise checking everything and doing your own research. But according to the materials I have collected, Phillip's parents' family looks like this:

Samuel Sherrill b 1 Oct 1725, Cecil Co MD md
Mary Preston. Their children:
Samuel Jr abt 1748
susan abt 1750
Catherine abt 1754
John abt 1756
?Uriah 12 Feb 1757
Adam 10 Mar 1758
William abt 1758
Mary Jane abt 1760
Philip abt 1761
George Davidson Sep or Oct 1762

This Samuel b 1725 was a son of Adam Sherrill the pioneer of which so much has been written.

Good luck

My name is Dianna Sherrell and in my research I found that at the start, in 500 ad, King Offa gave the land of ASCHERWYLA to the people that dwelled there and so, from that time it was John of Ascherwyla until it changed to the Ascherwyla being the last name. It is said it went through many changes (England) on down to sherwood, sherwill and Sherrill.. also sherrell... I found this information at the Mormon Libraries.. Also read all about your grandparents. I married a Sherrell, divorced, started the study on the name and found out that one of my ancestors, Sarah Simpson also married a Reuben SHERRELL... small world

Debbie, am interested in your Phillip Sherrill. In 1779, a Phillip Sherrill pays tax on 100 acres in Wilson's District of Washington/Greene county, NC/TN. In 1782 Martha Sherrill gets a grant for 100 Acres on south side of the Nolachucky River (Washington/Greene county NC/TN). 1783 Phillip Sherrill pays taxes in Greene county and then in 1784 pays taxes on 200 acres, same area. Am wondering if your Phillip and Martha are the same. I do not know who Phillip belongs to and do not know that the Martha of the land grant is the wofe of Phillip, but if you know there was a Phillip with wife Martha, this may be the case! Any reason to believe your Phillip and Martha left NC for what became TN ?

Sorry about your 2nd question. From what I've found on the internet, St. George's Parish is in what is today Hartford County, MD. From the web site Perkins List Projects - "About 1649, Colonel Nathaniel Utie came from VA... granted an island ... He named it Spes-Utie, meaning Utie's Hope. When Church of England became the established church... 1st vestry... at Spesutie Parish... In 1718, Spesutie Parish was divided into St. George's and St. John's Parishes." I found the last name Utie interesting in light of William Sherrill, Sr.suposedly naming a son Ute/Utie.

Sherrill research

Let's resolve from this point on to stop passing on possibilities and untruths as fact.
The Sherrill message boards and mail lists have a tremendous amount of information, some accurate, some proven incorrect, and some possibilities but with no proof. Unfortunately too many people over the years have supplied the same info over and over with no proof other than "it's in my files" or that "someone else said it was true" or "I found it in a file at a library" or even worse " I read it on the internet". We will never get some of these lines correct until we stop accepting everything and demand proof. My own ancestor Ruth Sherrill who married John Delaney in Greene county, TN is an example. She is in a published book as well as on the internet as having first married a Pryor and after his death married John Delaney. It is NOT true. Ruth Pryor and her husband were well and alive when Ruth Sherrill married John Delaney, but once this story began, it is now all but impossible to correct. I have searched for years to find her and her brother Lofton's parents to no avail.

Now on to William born ca 1666. He is another case where undocumented information abounds. I have seen no documentation of William's wife's name. No one has ever been able to supply their source for Mary /Margaret Rudicil or other. Perhaps those are possibilities, but always preface your statement with something to that effect so others are not mislead. William had a wife we assume because he had children, but we are not aware of her name. Three children that I am aware of have been proven as his children - William and Adam due to the selling of the "Three Partners " land and Mary who married Richard Perkins due to the St. George's Parish Registers which states that their daughter is grand daughter to William Sherrill.

Margaret/Margery wife of Elisha Perkins MAY also be a daughter, but I have not been supplied with a proof source or found myself a proof source at this time. There is also in the same area an Isaac old enough to be a creditor in 1716 and a Thomas who is testator for a will in 1728, 1739 time frame. Are these two men also sons of William? As with Margaret a possibility, but no connection yet that I am aware of.

Many over the years have given William other sons - Yont, Ute, John, Avington/Abenton, but again why?

I know Lofton Sherrill exists in Greene County, TN in 1813 and his sister is there in 1810. I would love to connect him to any of a number of Sherrill men also there at that time, but I have at this time no reason to even suspect one over another so I still search! I gladly accept theories, but as just that until proof is found or a documented preponderance of the evidence "proves" the statement.

Please no one take this as a personal attack as it is not, just an encouragement to document "facts" and state possibilities as just that.
Thomas Paul Sherrill Sr.; Fayette Co., Al

My name is Stephanie Wimer. I am the granddaughter of Thomas Paul Sherrill Sr of Fayette, Fayette Co., Alabama. Growing up, my mother didn't know any of her father's family, except that he had a brother that moved off. Finding family would be great, however, my main goal is simply to provide my children with as much of a complete family ancestory as possible.
Thomas P. was born 20 May 1910, later married Carrie Keller, also of Fayette Co., and passed away 29 Oct 1988. He had 3 children by the names of Thomas Paul Jr., Sharron, and Joan. If anyone has any information I would be very appreciative if you would share :) Please email me at little_newby_witch@yahoo.com

Thank you again for your time

I believe my Susan Elizabeth Sherril is a sister to William and Thomas Sherril. Susan was living in Daviess County, MO in Thomas' home. A few families away lived William O. Sherril. Does anyone have Elizabeth on their records?
