Sherrod Family-Thomas County

I have been doing research on the Sherrod family for about six months. I'm stuck on my great-great grandfather. I have found useful information on him including civil war papers, and Thomas County census from 1860 to 1910, he lived in Thomas County. But I can't find him on an 1850 census, when he would have lived with his parents. I found his obituary in our local newspaper on microfilm, but it did not give the name of his parents or any other clues about his past.

I've been stuck for about two months on him. James Allen Sherrod was born February 18, 1839 and died October 15, 1917. He is buried at Salem Baptist Church in Pavo, GA. He died two years before they started making death certificates, so my only other hope is someone else researching him or his relatives.

Does Lettie(Sherrod)Holland sound familiar? She was born October 15, 1915 to Randall and Estella Sherrod. She was raised in Aliceville, Alabama, and died on May 19, 1992 in Memphis.
The Sherrods that I am investigating begin with Sarah Sherrod born abt 1830. She had 10 children: Will, Wiley, Kit, Clarance, Forrest, Henry, Ronald, Dora, Mattie and Hester.
Two of Kit's son's, Kit Jr and Joseph, moved to Moss Point, MS, on the Gulf Coast. Many still live on the Gulf.
The info I have says the early Sherrods settled in Pennsylania. Some moved to Mississippi, Alabama, and North Carolina. Most are located in Aliceville, Pickens and Birmingham, Ala; Memphis, TN; and Louisville, Jackson and Columbus, MS.

Re: Esther Sherrod Owen Yates

Owen and Esther Yates lived in Tallokas, Brooks Co. prior to moving to Hamilton Co., Fl after 1880. The property they owned there is the same property my Grt grandparents, Robert E. and Molly Treadwell Humphreys, purchased in Jan. 1910. Sadly, Robert was murdered there five months later, by William D. Byrd. Byrd was indited for the murder along with O.C. Morse. Byrd fled to La. and never stood trial. The Yates property is now part of Nichol's Lake and certainly the most beautiful pieces of property in that region.

Sherrod family line....

I have been on this site since at least 2001 and trying to get it all straightened out. I had been in contact with someone named Joan Piper back in 2003. Granted it's been 6 years so I didn't figure her email was valid any longer and it's not sadly. I am posting our email correspondence including what I just tried to send her. If anyone has ANY information on what she was telling me, I'd greatly appreciate it! Here goes:

Hi Joan....I don't even know if you still have this email and I know it's been six (how on earth is that even possible?!) years since we last spoke about the ancestry stuff but I wanted to share something with you. There is a manor house near Nottingham that is now a hotel called Stapleford Park (http://www.staplefordpark.com/estate/heritage.htm) that was acquired in 1402 by a Robert Sherard and was in the family for over 400 years. I know that we are related to him but I haven't figured out how yet. There's another Sherard named Robert Harbrough Sherard who was the best friend of Oscar Wilde and his mother was the granddaughter of the author/poet William Wordsworth. If you've ever come across anything else you can send me, it would be very much appreciated.

> To: cheetahlily@xxxxxxx.com
Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 22:51:11 -0500
Subject: Re: Sherrod message board on Ancestry.com
From: jbpiper@xxxx.com
>
> HI AGAIN, WELL THE LAST TIME I SEND RON ANYTHING IT CAME BACK? AND I DID
> HAVE HIS PHONE NUMBER. PHIL IS IN NASHVILLE, AND HAS HIS OWN COMPUTER
> COMPANY. ALL MY BOOKS ETC. ARE PACKED AWAY SINCE I MOVED BACK TO TEXAS
> AND HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO DIG ANYTHING OUT. SORRY WISH I COULD BE OF
> SOME HELP, YOU MAY FIND UNDER THE SHERROD'S RON'S EMAIL ADDRESS OR EVEN
> POSSIBLE PHIL'S. I HAVE A LOT OF BOOK'S I BOUGHT AS WELL THAT ALSO HELPED
> IN MY SEARCH. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE NAME WAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGNAL
> SPELLING.
>
> JOAN
> On Sun, 10 Aug 2003 16:48:32 -0400 "Suzy Sherrod"
> writes:
> > Hi again Joan! Well that's most definitely an exciting piece of news!
> > I saw
> > the posts that Ron has left, but I have not actually spoken to him.
> > Do you
> > have his email address? I will write him and see if he can help me
> > with my
> > quest. I will also contact Phil and see what he's got for me. My
> > brother,
> > Ron Sherrod, lives in Nashville as well, but he hasn't been
> > following the
> > family tree any so he's not much of a help :-( In order for you to
> > find out
> > we're related to King James, you must really have done your work!
> > How on
> > Earth did you come across that?!?!? I'd love to see all the notes
> > you've
> > collected over the years. That's amazing. Anyway, if you could pass
> > on Phil
> > and Ron's respective email addresses, I'd be very appreciative.
> > Thank you
> > Joan!
> >
> > Sincerely,
> > Suzanne
> >
> >
> >
> > >From: jbpiper@xxxx.com
> > >To:
> > >Subject: Re: Sherrod message board on Ancestry.com
> > >Date: Sun, 10 Aug 2003 13:15:51 -0500
> > >
> > >did you know that King James the first is in our line? and we are
> > related
> > >to the Queen of England some how?
> > >I have a lot of research I have done over the Years, it took a lot
> > of
> > >digging but it is fun. do you know Ron Tyner? he is a Sherrod and
> > was
> > >able to connect on the ones here in the US for me. the rest I had
> > to do
> > >myself. Also, our cousin in Nashville has the family from all the
> > >different ones across the country, Phil Sherrod. A lot has been
> > given to
> > >him and he does have a site. under just Sherrod. Yes we are related
> > to
> > >the Sherwood's my own father told me that as a child.
> > >
> > >wish i could help, God Bless,
> > >On Sat, 09 Aug 2003 20:31:54 -0400 "Suzy Sherrod"
> > >writes:
> > > > Hi Joan! Wow! What a great find! I also heard that we had ties
> > to
> > > > Sherwood
> > > > Forest in England as well. If I ever get more info on my
> > ggg-gf,
> > > > then maybe
> > > > I can work my way backwards and find out when we came over to
> > > > America. I'm
> > > > sort of stuck on my ggg-gf Sam. I can't find any info on him on
> > > > Ancestry.com
> > > > or Genealogy.com. I also can't afford to join right now, since
> > they
> > > > ask a
> > > > lot to get access to census records. My family is from KY and
> > TN.
> > > > Where are
> > > > "your" Sherrods from? Maybe we're related ;-) Anyway, I hope we
> > can
> > > > talk
> > > > some more soon.
Yes Robert H. Sherrod does have a sister born in 1842! Their parents were Thomas and Purtandy Walden Sherrod. Do you have any information on Thomas, their father, because I have not been able to find Thomas' parents or siblings, where and when he was born and died. Can you help?
GGG Grandmother Quest

To the Barnes, Cates, Kates, O’Berry, Reese, Reece, Sherod, Sherrod, Wilson, Booth, Prentice, Prentiss, Crumer, and Cromer Families:

I am turning to all families that may be connected to my current quest:

My 2nd Great Grandmother was Laura Cates Barnes. Her middle name may have been Kate. According to census records, she was born in Florida; death records provide her birth date as 26 Sep 1845; passed away on 1 Nov 1907, Kissimmee, Osceola, FL. They are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery, Kissimmee, FL. Laura Cates married James Alpheus Barnes about 1865. James Alpheus Barnes was the son of Benjamin Barnes, who was son of Jesse Barnes...of South Carolina.

Laura Cates and James Alpheus Barnes had the following children:
1)	Elizabeth Waller Barnes, b: 1 Dec 1867, Lake City, Columbia County FL; married James Franklin O’Berry
2)	Benjamin Reese Barnes; b 26 Jul 1869; Lake City FL; died 1870
3)	Sherod (Sherrod) Alpheus Barnes; b 4 Nov 1870; died 1872
4)	George Theodore Barnes; b 24 Mar 1872; died 1917
5)	Rosa Jane Barnes; b 10 Mar 1874; died 1879
6)	Ola Verdelia Barnes; b 17 Jul 1876; died 15 May 1936 (married Daniel T. Wilson “Dede”)
7)	William C. Barnes; b 13 Oct 1879;

Tracing the ancestry of Laura Cates has become a nightmare. I have all the census records “after” her marriage to James Alpheus Barnes. I have followed up “family” leads, expanded my search to NC, GA, TN, AL and TX. In desperation I started studying the names of her children for clues, which has led me on a very interesting study of the following families: Sherod, Sherrod, Reece, and Reese.

I have stumbled upon the following information that seems to mean nothing, but could provide a breakthrough:
•	In 1842, a Mary Reece, born 1825 in TN married a Robert H. Sherrod, born 1816 in TN.
•	On July 2, 1882 in TX, a Mary Elizabeth Cates married Granville Sherrod (born 8 May 1859 in TN, son of John “Jack” Sherrod). Mary Elizabeth Cates was daughter of William D. Cates (b 5 Dec 1831, TN) and Martha M. Booth (b 15 Aug 1841).
•	In Maine, I discovered an Ola Cates...no further information.
•	In Alabama, 1849, a Malinda Cates purchased property Alabama.
•	In “The Ancestors & Descendents of Carroll Prentice” it is stated that Samuel Wesley Prentice, (son of William Prentice) born 20 January 1809 in Louisville, Jefferson Co. Kentucky; married Malinda Crumer Cates 1848.
•	The 1850 Marshall AL census shows a Malinda Prentice living with Cates children, including a Laura Cates age 4.
•	The 1860 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children including Laura Prentice age 14.
•	The 1870 Marshall AL census shows Malinda and Samuel Prentice with children and Laura Cates age 24.

I would very much appreciate any help in solving the mystery regarding my GGG grandmother Laura Cates O’Berry.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Barbara Bretthauer Marquez Froyland
bfroyland@comcast.net

We believe that our Grandfather is Richard Sherrod son of Thomas & Purtandy Walden. The 1860 Census in Haywood, co. show Richard as the first son born to them age 21. When you bring up the Ancestry World Tree viewer, it shows he is one of 14 children. Siblings are James,Rachael,Buford,Mary,
William,Jane,Felix,Robert,George,Rufus,Clara,Elen,Elden. Purtandy's father was William Walden.I hope this helps, please let me know if that is your Robert listed above as a sibling of Richard.

Margie

I am related to the Sherrods mentioned in this query through Robert Henry Sherrod born 11 Jan 1861, died 2 Nov 1930.
Karen Walden listed his death as 1878; her list of children did not give his date of birth. His marriage to Sarah Jane Taylor was June 9, 1856 in Madison County, Tennessee. Thomas Sherrod(Richard's father) lived in Haywood County, TN in 1860 in the Wellwood Community; in 1870 Thomas and family were found in Lee County, Mississippi (Tupelo) and by 1877 Thomas Sherrod and family were back in Crockett County, TN. (Madison County and Crockett County are right next to each other as a matter of fact, the Sherrod Family Farm still exists and is on the Madison Co/Crockett Co line today.

I have Martha Jane Sherrod b 25 Dec 1862 d 31 March 1928; she is buried in Meachum Cemetery in Millsfield, Dyer County, Tennessee.
I have coresponded with a Harvey Moore @ (615) 729-5938; his information says Charles Perkins Moore wife Martha Jane Sherrod are his relatives. He also indicates Father and Mother of Martha Jane as Sherrod and Taylor--which proves Richard Sherrod and Sarah Jane Taylor are the parentsw of Martha Jane Sherrod Moore. Jo S. Lewis

Looking for Sherrod family history in Edgecombe or Martin NC

Hi,

I'm a Sherrod and I am looking for relatives that stem from Martin/Edgecombe NC area. I currently have census information for Henry Sherrod my ggrandfather who was born approx between 1878-1882 (it's unclear in the reports as well). Henry was Married to Mary Ridley who lived from 1888-1992. They had a son Andrew Sherrod my grandfather of Martin Co. was born 1909 and was murdered sometime around 1935 or so. I believe Henry's parents may have been Carey(born abt 1844) & Cherry Sherrod of Edgecombe, but at this point things seem to get fuzzy. The 1910 has Henry & Mary's race as Mullatto and I have met my ggrandmother on several occasions in Bridgeton NJ and she is very fair skinned with long hair and passed away at 105 (too bad I didn't have these question as a youngster when she was still alive as she was a brilliant woman who wrote childrens books in her day and could recite them from memory til death. Many members of my family have indian connections of some sort. There is also a Charity Martin who lived with Henry and Mary which holds keys to many Indian census reports connecting Mildred Wilson back to the Cuffee indians, Bass Indians, and Martin indians from Deep Creek VA & Prince Ann Area. Could anyone possibly shed some light on this for me? It's been a real journey!

On the patent of Thomas Hampton 1637 in the Virginia Library and The Early Virginia Immigrants by Greer this name is spelled and listed as GEORG SHEAVE not Shearer. Maby misspelled but like to verify information
since this is used as lineage of Sherrod TN.
It is very often quoted on lineage charts that he was the son of George Shearer(and all other spellings checked) headright claimed by Thomas Hampton 1637 700acres according to "17th Century Isle of Wight by Boddie". This book is searchable on google plus I owned this book and cannot find this statement in there. Does someone have the page number on what book this is in? Thanks
