Charles Sherwin

Hi, I am looking for the parents of Charles Sherwin born abt. 1850 in Vermont. He married Estelle D. Cox. I have looked around and have seen where some are saying that his father is Stephen Sherwin, yet I have not found any document to this fact. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you get a chance I'd look through the parish records of All Saints, Loughborough - and surrounding parishes. As I mentioned there are no Peters in the Derbyshire, Staffordshire area so I recon it could be more than a coincidence.

Thanks for the reply. You are correct in what you say about Peter, all the names seem to be Samuel, John and William and then all of a sudden PETER!. Maybe I've headed in the wrong direction. There is a rumour in my family about French Huguenots settling in England in the 17th century, I supose if that is the case they could have just adopted a name from the area they settled in, pure aussumption on mybehalf that one. I'm affraid I don't have an answer for you, however Peter wasn't a christian name used in the Derbyshire/Staffordshire Sherwin familys of the time. (Of course he could have been named after a maternal relative.)
However there was a Peter bpt in Loughborough in 1677 Perhaps this could be a relative? his father/grandfather?

Can anyone help me. I have a letter addressed to my Great Aunt from her cousin Harry Benton. Letter states "his father was Samuel(stocking weaver) married Mary Sharp 2 July 1792 at Packington. His father was Peter who married Ann Merryman at Ashby De La Zouch". The problem I/we my family is that is far as we can go. Does anyone have anymore info on Peter and Ann, birth dates/parents etc. Regards Paul (New Zealand)

I am fairly sure he is a Henry and not a Harry, only he was a Henry in one census, and Harry in another !

I have ordered Clarice's wedding certificate so hopefully that should help !

Do you know of a Henry Sherwin married to a Delia Smith ?

Hi Sarah
If you order Clarice and Harrys wedding certificate it would probably give you Harrys fathers name and occupation. From there it would be easier to work out where Harry might have been born. There were a family of Sherwins in Chesterfield so it is quite likely that came he from here.

Hi,

My grandfather's mother was born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire on 30th May 1887. Her name was Clarice Smith. She married a Henry or Harry Sherwin, but that was in Mansfield, I believe about 1909. Clarice's mother was Delia Sherwin nee Smith, and I believe she died in Mansfield in 1925. Clarice's father was Issac Smith, but I only know he was born in Northampton. Clarice married George Davies, but I don't know where. I have been having problems with the Sherwin name, particulary Clarice's parents, so any info would be great. Many thanks, Sarah

I have a Fred Rattray on my list that I am trying to find descendants of. They used to live on Lockhart, chateauguay. Are you relatives of this Rattray and if so I would also like to find the offspring of above. Thanks.

I've looked into this family a little. I believe that the Chesterfield Sherwins are descended from the Winster Sherwins who can be traced back the 1600s.
I think Stephen Sherwin was bpt Winster 21 Aug 1774.

Hi.My husbands gt gt gt grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Sherwin who married Matthew Coupe on 25 Dec 1866 in Newbold Dby.Marys parents were Henry Sherwin,bapt 2 Nov 1817 at Chesterfield,and Charlotte Taylor.Henrys parents were Stephen Sherwin and Mary Mitchel.Would love to hear from you.

I have a John Sherwin born in Burslem in 1780, married to Elizabeth and they had 3 sons: Isaac,George Green and John Sergent Sherwin. All the sons moved to Tazmania and George had a daughter,Frances Amy Lillias Sherwin (known as Amy and married Hugo Gorlitz) who became a famous opera singer. There was a Ralph Sherwin born 1799-1830 in Durham who was quite a well know stage actor of the time - It might be worth seeing if you have any connection to him. If you are interested I might have some more info I can send you.

Walter and Tora were my grandparents as well, I am the son of Charles Allen's brother Robert (Bob) Sherwin. Alice and her sons resided in Tom's River, N.J. after Allen's death in a plane crash in 1944 in North Carolina. I believe Greg Sherwin is theonly one still alive and the last I had contact with him he was living in Denver/Aspen CO area.

All 4 Sherwin brothers, Allen, James (Jim), Robert (Bob) and Richard (Dick)are now gone as of a year or so ago.

Jim's son, William (Bill) and myself Robert, Jr. (Robby) are the only other remaining Sherwin men in this line I believe. We are the 13th generation born in America of the original SHerwin immigrant's of 1644.

Somehwere, I do have a complete (as of a few years back now) Sherwin family tree compliled originally by my Great Aunt Bertha Sherwin from Boston, Walter Allen's sister.

We all share Walter (my middle name) Allen, William or some variation on the family names.

Does anyone have any info on this william sherwin born in Derbyshire 06 aug 1800? emigrated to the states with his family in 1849. I am working on a theory that he may be the son of one of the Sherwins in my tree. Any info on him would be great. Also need to know if anyone has searched the Derby Parish records for his birth, as he isn't on the IGI.

Hi Rhonda, Sorry to have taken so long to reply -- have been busy with various medical appointments - nothing too serious.

Which of the family are you related to? My grgrgrandfather was Rufus and Cleopatra's son, Elbridge Gerry, born in 1821. Do you have the reference re land in Iowa and Rufus' service in War of 1812? I understand he was a musician (fife?). I didn't know about the Iowa land grant altho I have always wondered why he went there. If you are interested I can send particulars of my Lacona, Iowa, Bartletts.

Has anyone found Rufus' parents yet?

Alice was the daughter of Roy H. and Alice Rankin. Charles and Alice had 3 sons Charles Allen, John Michael and Gregory Scott Sherwin. I am pretty new to all this but thought it was about time I looked into the family history on my dad's side ( my mother is from Southern Ireland).

It will take some time to even get my great-grandfather's name, my grandfather and father were both born in Loughborough and I spent some of my childhood there.

Hello, my dad's name was Gerald Sherwin and he was born in Ashbourne, Derbyshire. His mother's name was Violet Fanny Sherwin and she had several brothers and sister but I can only remember Evelyn.

If you note down the volume and page number you can order her birth certificate which should have her parents names on it.
She was born the last quarter of 1901 and so won't be on the 1901 census. There were two Sherwin families in Ashbourne at this time.

A fun Sherwin fact I have dicovered - Ebenezer (1675-1812) Sherwin's sister Sarah is the gggggrandmother of Grace Anna Goodhue who married President Calvin Coolidge. Also Charlotte Sherwin,daughter of Elnathan Jr married James Leander Cathcart, a colorful character whos papers are in the Library of Congress. He spent time as a captive in Tripoli and later came back as emmisary of the newly formed United States and went to settle a treaty with Tripoli.
